you young whippersnappers want everything done for you nowadays!

I checked it earlier, but even now i dont see an option to delete my post. Many boards disallow to erase posts.

Those who are so miffed about having Steam running must also disable the dozens of OS services that they don't need...right?

Yep, its the first thing i do when i'm reinstalling my OS. I have also only two apps starting with my OS: firewall and daemon tools [got used to it :)], every other i run manually.

May I ask...why?
It's not like Steam is a resource pig...we're talking 15-17 MB RAM and basically 0 CPU use idling in the background. Right now I have Thunderbird running and it's using 135 MB doing nothing...explorer is holding down 47 MB with only the desktop showing...

Also, you run no anti-malware?

I'm not against a minimalist philosophy or anything; I just don't see any benefit in disabling 20 MB of RAM (0.1-0.2% of a typical system's RAM).

No, i monitor everything with firewall, every app dll/memory and network access, the only problem i can have is to unzip/unrar something unsafe or when someones want to use pendrive on my PC :p, i'm avoiding it like fire.

One application takes 20, other takes 30, another 40, another 20 and so on and so on, i just dont like it. I dont use or run apps i dont need currently.

Good luck. :) I used to do that as well until one day my PC got infected even though I hadn't even used it actively in over 2 weeks. It got infected just by being connected to the internet.

I used to be like that back in the DOS days when it mattered with TSRs. I also used to be like that in the Win9x days, again when it mattered.

Sometime after WinXP launched, I decided that it really didn't matter if a program was using 10-20 MB of my 2 GB of memory. Now with 16 GB, I could really not care less if what is basically a TSR is using 20 MB of memory. I'd need 50 of those running just to use 1 GB or 1/16th of my available memory.

Heck for the convenience it brings I wouldn't even mind if it used up 500 MB as long as I don't have to worry about patching and other mundane tasks. I barely have time enough to play a game every now and then. I certainly don't want to waste that time checking to see if a patch is available, downloading it, and installing it.

I guess if I was still a Teen or in my early 20's I might worry about it just for the hell of it, and having nothing better to do with my time. But anything that maximizes my game playing time (when I have free time) and minimizes the drudgery involved in running games, is good for me. :)

Uh, yeah...I have a dedicated Untangle firewall box with 3x anti-malware and my internal scanners still pick stuff up (I run MS security essentials and Super Anti-Spyware on my W7 box) from time to time. I'm curious what firewall you're running to be so confident. My Untangle is running ClamAV, Kaspersky and Untangle's own anti-phishing/spyware engine.

As I'm sure you're aware no anti-malware ever gets more that about 70% detection in rigorous testing and no firewall can scan https or SSL of any type. New drive-by scripts come out every day (of course no scripts helps with that).

Anyway, I guess I understand the mental aspect - I hate when Logitech or a printer manufacturer wants me to have their background thing running by default. I know it makes no difference in my power consumption or performance but I get neurotic about those (or Catalyst) so I can't really criticize you being just as irrationally-mental about Steam :) Mine is a dedicated gaming rig though so I guess my psychosis lets up for the Steam client.

Dunno what firewall did You use, but my monitor also applications memory access, other application from application access and dll access. Of course there is always risk, thats why i need to know how a system behave and if i catch something, i'll have to use some antivir software of course :), but its really rare and nothing will communicate with internet without fw permission

Oh and i have 8gb ram :), but rule is rule. Its useless thing and i prefer to let my browser take 5gb if it must than apps that i dont use to take 1-1.5gb. Also it gives me a one advantage, i know what processes i'm running, so i can identify if something is wrong faster.

@Mize
Agnitum Outpost and non standard browser - Avant Browser.

Ps. My internet explorer is permanently blocked :) I erased it once, but then i had a problems with microsoft sites :p, so i just leave it blocked now :)

I stopped the OCD about background apps once I hit around 2GB of RAM. You guys can carry the torch on that if you find joy in it. ;)

I don't even remember what I was using at the time. This was a decade or so ago. I've since been using a comprehensive suite of lightweight programs. As well as firewalls, restricted browsing permissions, etc. And even then I know I'm not completely safe, but only greatly reducing my odds of getting something unwanted.

All, I'll say for you is, good luck. :) As I know I won't convince you otherwise. :)

Last night I saw my Chrome taking a bit over 6GB of RAM (with ~60 tabs open). It had been running since the beginning of the week and in two tabs I had my g+ main feed open with ~700 active people posting there constantly :)

But yeah, I stopped worrying about background stuff as soon as I got first "multicore" CPU in form of P4 with HT. That HT, even though it was sucky at giving extra performance increased the system responsiveness to a whole new level. Today with 4/8 (virtual) core CPUs I often don't even notice when some task goes haywire and decides to eat up 2/3'rds of CPU cores.

I have 16GB of RAM and I still don't like all the background crap running.

"don't like" != "can observer a performance drop as a result"

:)

But I know what you mean...

We shouldn't ever have free memory, it should always be used for something, app cache... (Just flag memory pages appropriately to discard them on need w/o any flushing to disk.) [On second thought the OS probably lies already...]
We shouldn't ever have temp files, apps should be using memory instead. (and they especially shouldn't be on my SSD!)

You know... This smiley's always been creeping me out ever since I first saw it, partly because I don't really understand what it's fundamentally supposed to mean. Yeah, I can see it's like, a kitty-face, and kitties are cute, so it illustrates the concept of cute, but still, what does it MEAN?! :devilish:

...Especially when inserted into random sentences like you just did?

I bought 16GB RAM essentially for Windows system cache. ;) It does help smooth out a lot of stuff without a doubt. I was unsure if Windows would use that much for its cache but it does. I considered 32GB but it is a huge price jump for those 8GB DIMMs. I do also have a Crucial M4, but most files reside on HDDs.

I heart SSDs and gobs of cheap RAM.

I agree, ever since Vista, seeing unused memory drives me bonkers. Back in WinXP I didn't know better. Likewise with tempfiles on the SSD. Perhaps the OS is lying but I like seeing in Win7 that I have virtually no free memory while I have X amount available.

Just trying to be cute. memory and bits, 4 bits to a nibble, cats nibble ... or something. rwar :p
