Bleh, perhaps my old DOS roots is too finely ingrained. I have a 512 GB HDD partition on which I run ALL of my games. And it never goes above roughly 200 GB of installed games at any time. I just regularly uninstall single player games once I'm done with them rather than leaving them installed.

So in Steam I have a ton of games that aren't currently installed on the HDD because I don't forsee playing them in the next month or two.

And this is on a computer with 9 TB of storage. :)

Regards,
SB

I've found that running games off SSD is not a particularly noticeable improvement unless the game is one of those that has 50,000 individual tiny files instead of large archive files. Overall I don't think it's worth the price to put games on SSD right now.

For HDD, I suggest running a defrag app that will also sort directories to reduce seek times, like MyDefrag. Also, having tons of RAM to allow for a big system cache helps. First load may be a little slow but subsequent reads fast.

What about the absurd load times on games like BF3? SSD doesn't help?

Hey guys - I thought to try putting some of my EA boxed games into Origin today. Mirror's Edge and Dead Space 2 keys worked (only EA boxed games I have). Neato.

My Impulse purchase of Mass Effect 2 is in there too, probably from the Bioware account.

It's pretty easy to determine if SSD will help - look at the CPU usage when the game is loading. If you are maxing out a core or close to it, it's probably not going to be much faster by SSD. I don't have BF3 so I don't know about that one. But with DXHR for example there was barely any difference. The biggest improvement I've seen was with one of my Oblivion mod setups with a zillion little files to load and that was a lot faster on SSD.

On the other hand, SSD are rather nice for continuous background streaming, you can even manage to get your data before the end of the current frame if you ask it early enough.
Not sure any game uses that kind of tech though.

Each file access has a non negligible overhead on windows, that's why archives are used, even uncompressed they are better as you keep the file open during the application lifetime, paying the overhead only once. (Compressed is better of course.)

I've managed to get Origin to accept some more of my game library. There are two web pages they have that accept some keys that Origin itself does not.
https://activate.ea.com/gameactivation.do
https://activate.ea.com/applyentitlement.do

In total I've managed to add Mirror's Edge, Crysis, Crysis Warhead, Dead Space 1+2, and Mass Effect. Mass Effect and Crysis Warhead are even Steam purchases. ;) For Crysis I had to chat with support because while my key registered it didn't appear in Origin. Support sorted it out though. This live chat is way ahead of Steam support btw.

Spend nothing; have all EA games in one place; get box copies downloadable. Win, I think.

BF 3 has quick loadings, even quicker for Back To Karkand maps, like ~10 seconds and i'm ingame.

Leagues of Legends has awful loadings though.

hm... From Dust and Titan Quest Gold are each $5 at the moment. Not sure I can stand playing From Dust for more than 10 minutes though. The demo on 360 made me motion sick.

How's Titan Quest?

I know of a few friends still playing it after a number of complete run through both the game and its expansion...
That said, there's Diablo 3 around the corner, no ?

I bought From Dust & played about an hour last night. Fun game, not sure where motion sickness would com into it...?

$5! Blizzard can kiss my ass (or pay a masseuse).

Amazing Diablo clone, really big with great community. There are for example two new campaigns made solely by community with 100h+ each :)

Okay, so I picked it up and spent 3 hours on it before heading to bed @ 1:30AM. Is there a main community site for the mods and tweaks?

I like it so far. The only thing is that I'm a bit OCD when it comes to looting and alt doesn't pick up on the actual worthless junk to sell, which is nice (but I still pick up the shit anyway since TP is free). Is it actually worth it to buy those expensive weapons or can I just wait for the weapons to come along when looting? Not that I'm having problems with difficulty, I'm just accumulating cash ($1 at a time sometimes).

Picked the hunting skill tree. No idea what to expect really. Are all the classes good? The healing/animal lover skill tree seemed geared towards co-op though.

There are many mods, community patch You should apply and browser based build generators.
Like this one http://www.titancalc.com/

Dream expansion class and its a little overpowered compared to rest, but all are playable. You just need to learn a little about skills and dont choose classes that buffs too much, because they are more balanced for coop, then SP :) Dream, Warfare, Defense, Spirit are awesome, but my first char was Nature+Hunting, because i love archer classes and it still was playable.

If You can buy something worthy from vendor dont hesitate, but drops are main source of Your items. Purple enemies with auras drops the most magic items in the game, so You should farm them :), there is nice group of them in a burnt village in act 3 that i was farming successfully :), but for now, bought ones should still be good.

From the what are you playing now thread
Just finished Titan Quest and its expansion 1.5 times
i played titan quest finished it and then played the expansion expecting it to be a separate campaign because it installs in a separate location and has a separate exe
but no its the original game plus an added bit (imagine buying morrowind then bloodmoon where bloodmoon is a separate install containing mowwind and bloodmoon)
so when i run titan quest expansion i have to go thorough the original campaign again untill I get to the new stuff which is at the end (it does let you import your char though)

And i picked up and sold every single piece of junk that was dropped....

oooh crap, so I should have started with the "expansion" ? Do they let you import the original character?

yes
if you start with tq first then play the expansion you will start the game at level one of tq (but with an upgraded character)
what you can do is find a teleport and teleport as near to the end of tq as possible then you can just play the final section of tq then move on to the expansion

I just got bored with the game after a while, but a tip:

Hunting+Dream is considered the best class in the game. It's breakable as fuck.
