*spin-off* Sega Discussion

I thought a moderator suggested the Sega discussion was a little off-topic in this thread? Could we please return to on-topic now? ;)

Ok folks, I moved all the recent Sega discussion from the "multiplatform dev difficulties" thread over here.

Example: 12 million people chose to buy a Dreamcast instead of a PS2. Sega kills the DC and puts most of their games and flagship titles on PS2. Not smart. Most Sega fans migrated to GC and Xbox. If they wanted a PS2 they would have bought one in the first place...

Good point.

Even though PS2 went on to sell very well, I'm sure there are many more people like JA and myself that went from DC to XB.

Even though Sega did bring many of their games to xb, too many of them were ports of games which DC gamers already had and some key games like VF4 were announced at an early stage to be ps2 exclusive.

Not long after giving up on DC and going multiplat, their quality went out the window.

They had a creative/quality explosion with DC and the collapse of this great platform seemed to take the wind out of their sails. There were still a couple games which were produced after this that stood on their own as quality efforts, but nothing like what they were producing prior to going multiplat.

I'd add to that that one of Sega's stated advantages in going multiplat was to not be tied to one platform and the ability to have games on multiple platforms would allow them to better recoup costs. Question I have is why didn't they listen to their own advice earlier? Many of us figured the day of 3rd party exclusives was coming to an end, but it seems Sega didn't get this memo.

I dunno about that. Skies of Arcadia is, IMO, overrated, and Sonic Adventure 2 was just embarrassing compared to SA1... I've never had a chance to play Shenmue and JSR, so I won't comment on them.

Skies of Arcadia was great when it came out. Only downside is it had a tad too much aggro as you traveled in the ship from what I remember.

Yes. Skies was a great game and so was Shenmue, for its time.

But the market had moved by the time Sega put games out on Xbox and GC. JSRF should have been a GC title. Panzer Dragoon - great game - but on rails and not acceptable to mainstream gamers. GUNVALKYRIE had difficult controls. Sega GT was too little compared to GT3, etc... the list goes on.

The only properties they could really salvage were Virtua Figher and Sonic, which should have been multi-platform titles. Obviously Sega realizes their error or they wouldn't have made both of these franchises multiplaform on X360 and PS3.

Yet they still don't really know what their doing outside of Virtua Fighter. I mean Sega Rally came and went with but a murmur. Sonic just never worked great in 3D because Naka-san can't program a 3D camera to save his own life, not to mention all of the bullshit side characters. People want to speed their ass off as Sonic, not run around with a hammer as Amy. It's ridiculous.

This stuff is OBVIOUS. Sega doesn't have a clue anymore.

They did Sonic Heroes, which was a multi-platforms title. Though can't blame you for forgetting that one. So are the other Sonic games after that, like Shadow. They all were pretty bad though. The best Sonic game out of that gen was Sonic pinball for GBA, that was one sweet pinball game.

Yeah what's up with that. There was a PS2 Sega Rally and the latest incarnation and no one seems to care. I think Sega pretty much destroyed their franchises. Most of their franchises have little value. Resurrecting franchises aren't easy. What's worst Sega doesn't seem to have anything on the horizon, that's worthy of hype.

Well there is the NiGHTS sequel all of us Sega Saturn fans have been clamoring for. This sequel has been a long time coming especially after that tease in Sonic Adventure. I know it's most likely not going to be as good as the old Sega games but it's going to be nice seeing the purple guy again. I just hope they use the same music talent from the first game in the sequel. There's something so sweet and soothing about that music.

Now all we need is a Burning Rangers sequel...

NiGHTS sequel has potential, I'll admit. Hardcore Wii owners might like it if Naka-san nails the gameplay.

Sega has opportunities. They really need to focus on presentation and gameplay.

Sonic might be best left to hand-helds like DS and PSP, but many of their other franchises could do well on Wii/X360/PS3 if they really analyzed what the market wanted.

They were on the right track with Phantasy Star Online. Why didn't they keep evolving that game graphically and gameplay-wise? They really dropped the ball there. 500,000 subscribers and they let it just fizzle out. Ridiculous.
