Sony's PlayView information tech coming to PS3

That highlights both the swishness of the super-sized image, and the absurdity in limiting information to a 2D matrix! that a far, far inferior strategy for selecting a car for info than categorisation by manufacturer and model, or manufacturer and date, or other criteria. The ideal selection method would be a searchable database where you can select by model, year, power, top speed, torque, etc.

Now alternatively, if they had every manufacturer as an icon, and could zoom in and see their lineup, and zoom in to see specific models, that'd at least have the info organised more logically for this swish interface to render.

How many stuff have they added into GT5?
Its as if every single thing Sony was planning in the future for the PS3 in general were added in GT5, plus a ton of other stuff.
Unbelievable how much tech content is in there

Now, about PlayView in GT5, I doubt the cars are all thrown unsorted. If you look closely they seem kind of sorted by type in a column. The information might also be re-arrangeable

I dont think it is impractical actually. The exploration can be fast and seamless. There is lots of information that can be observed simultaneously in an organized fashion so, if groups of cars are organized from slowest to fastest for example and you want to get to the racing cars, you can identify which way to go until you find the interest area without having to search the whole space. You simply recognize information trends. So you scan and move accordingly. And in that interest area you can zoom to the group you want such as rally cars.

It looks random to an observer of someone else using it, but thats because the observer has no idea what the user is searching for until he finds it and points at it.

edit:

The second video also shows a cursor. If there is also an information bar added that mentions what is currently highlighted it can make the scanning even more practical, because it combines spatial/pattern/trend recognition of the information with text information that we have been familiar with.

They should be applying this selective loading tech to textures if they haven't already. Is megatexture doing that?

Here it is:

Sony Computer Entertainment Japan announced today a new digital book service for PlayStation Store. The new PlayView for Games service will deliver multimedia-enhanced digital copies of books to be viewed on PlayStation 3 and PSP.

The PlayView for Games service makes use of a viewing technology called "PlayView" which allows high resolution content to be displayed smoothly, complete with zooming, search and other convenient tools. The viewing software also supports multimedia extensions, allowing for videos, music and web content to be embedded within pages.

The first offering for the service will be a Capcom published strategy guide called Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G Monster Data Chishikisho.

Can you multitask PlayView with a game running ? Looking at guide while playing game could be useful I suppose, but if you have to quit game, it sort of beat the purpose.

Can you multitask PlayView with a game running ?

It's PS3, of course not!

Cell was advertised as a multi-tasking monster and PS3 can't even copy/delete files asynchronously. Hell half the stuff it downloads still can't be done in the background and most games don't even have custom soundtracks (something PSP has when hacked)

I wish Sony would get their priorities straight. There are far more important things they could be doing than making a glorified power point program

Didn't know it's already used for the interactive comics application.

Sony Computer Entertainment's PlayView image viewing technology brought PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable users interactive manuals and manga. Now sony is taking the technology to a new level.

At the Game Tools and Middleware Forum 2011 event in Tokyo today (via Famitsu.com), the company revealed that PlayView will soon support 4K resolutions. This means 4096 pixels width by 2160 pixels height, or four times current full HD resolution.

The technology will also support 3D stereoscopic image output. Even when viewing in 3D, users will be able to zoom in and out just like with standard PlayView content. Sony suggested 3D photo albums as one possible application of the new 3D support.

Sony will also be more closely incorporating PlayView into games. Developers will be able to include PlayView-based content directly in games by making use of a PlayStation 3 library that allows them to call up a PlayView utility from the game and set what page to output and how large to output the images.

One of the first applications of the improved PlayView technology will be the new "Plup Series" visual magaizne series from Lucent Pictures Entertainment. As detailed at Famitsu.com, a digital version of the magazines will be released on PlayStation 3 and will make use of PlayView for 4K resolution, with some pages even supporting 3D output.

Two Plup Series magazines will be released, iQueen and aButton.

iQueen looks err..... interesting ?
