Sony VR Headset/Project Morpheus/PlayStation VR

But. .. I'm happy the gamers who skipped psvr because of this will now accelerate sales, making a bigger VR market.
How many gamers skipped the current version of PSVR because of these subtle differences? 120,000 said, "no thanks until the cables are thinner" and a further 170,00 said, "not until I have HDR pass-through because there's no way I'm plugging and unplugging the breakout box," resulting a ~30% sudden increase in PSVR install base?

I'm thinking the uptick will be negligible. :p

According to the gaf whining at launch, it seems to be everyone.

So how does this uodate make the current owners feel?
PSVR+HDR owner here.

I knew of the problems before I made the purchase, and I also knew an update should be a no brainer.

I'll be interested to know how much they'll charge for the upgrade for current users. I also want to see if the new unit doesn't keep the fan moving even with the console on standby.
This should have been available on day 1, though I do see how the timing for the headset development couldn't fit a recent chip for HDR pass-through.

That said, the problems I mentioned with the processor unit are the main problem for me not using PSVR more often.

Ouch, is the cable detachable? IE - easy to replace?

Of course not. Real shame, especially when you consider that this is a 400€ item. I somewhat understand not having replaceable cables on 100€ earphones (especially when the replacement cables for high end iems can run you 50 bucks alone), but at some point it really should be mandatory. The best part about my Philipps Fidelio X2 open headphones really is the fact that you can just use any cheap cable with a 3.5 mm jack.

Well, my PSVR is on its way to the Sony service now. "Only" took 5 calls to the service hotline to get things rolling. This is a huge improvement over the 500 calls it would have taken during the PS3 days I guess. I'm supposed to be getting a free replacement within the next 2-3 weeks. Warranty would have run out in a month, so getting a new unit just in time is probably a good thing.

I hope your Sony Service is better than in the UK. I have some wireless 7.1 Surround headphones and the last time they went for repair (battery not charging at all) the service was atrocious, only after I had paid the needed parts did they tell me they were not available anymore. To add insult to injury, when they "returned" them, I got someone else's camera lens instead of the headphones. Curious enough, battery was charging again when I got it back, even without being replaced o_O

Spawn a new thread "Sony Customer Support Nightmare across countries" or something like that?

Because I also got burned by Sony Customer support multiple times, across various devices. They even dodged the question about spare parts availability of PSVR.

I don't think I've had any pleasant customer support experiences no matter the company. Getting my RRoD 360 replaced was a lengthy nightmare as well. Amazon is fantastic with that kinda stuff, though.
Either way, it's all anecdotal. Maybe I'm just unlucky.

Could be. I had a relatively good experience the last time I had to deal with Sony customer support. The return and replacement for my PSP with 4 stuck/dead pixels went just fine.

Unfortunately the PSP I got back had 2 dead/stuck pixels. And because none of them were in the direct center, they wouldn't replace this one. This despite one of the stuck pixels being stuck on bright white near the edge being very very visible.

OK. So, maybe not so pleasant after all. :p

Thankfully the store I bought it from got some stock back in after I got the replacement so I was able to take it back to them to exchange for another one.

Regards,
SB

I've had a malfunctioning Vita replaced within 2 weeks, and two dualshock 4 controllers with decaying rubbers in the analog sticks replaced within 10 days.

IIRC Sony even had someone come to my home at an appointed day/hour to pick up my broken Vita.

My experience with anything playstation has been great so far.

I wonder if it has to do with country and local culture. While still living in Portugal I had to use ASUS customer service twice and both were stellar! A laptop with a broken HDD was replaced in less than 1 week and they picked it up and delivered at home! In the UK Sony will not pick up your stuff, you have to package it and send it yourself.

I guess the only lesson to take from there is in a country with a piss poor minimum wage, your company gets to provide premium services for cheap.

How about Indonesia? Piss poor country, cheap labor, and piss poor customer support from Sony for years.

And it was not for playstation but also for their Xperia and VAIO line (dunno with BRAVIA line, as it has never broke down inside warranty date be it mine or from friends and family).

ASUS on the other hand consistently gave surprisingly good support. No need to bring receipt as long as you already register it online. If one part is broken, you can bring home your device until they received the stock for that particular item, and you bring your device back to them.

But the most amazing is from Samsung. They will service your phone on-the-spot, right in front of your face. The ladies are so skilled, they will disassemble, replace parts, and reassemble in minutes.

Edit : I have sent a follow up email to sony, asking about Psvr spare parts

I decided to take the plunge and make the upgrade to the PS4 Pro just for PSVR. Even if some games only do supersampling and remove "foveated rendering" is good enough for me. At least it will make the image clearer, especially text.

Update: I saw a lot people on forums saying there was no discernible difference between PS4 and PS4 Pro. I have to say I'm really pleased. I notice the difference from the moment I put the headset on. Even the menu is way more clear! Tried RoB, Batman, RE7 demo and Fated. All of those showed a cleaner image and a longer "draw distance" (meaning that image at the distance was not blurry like on OG, not that there is more stuff being drawn). Honestly, no one who would be looking to get PSVR should get an OG, but go straight to Pro!

Yup the pro upgrade is pretty nice and it even works on non pro titles like batman and London heist.

Maybe all non-unity Psvr games already automatically scales its rendering resolution and other effects?

Yes, I think so because even the dashboard (what I meant by menu) is way clearer. I was not expecting that since, common on, its a dashboard, how hard would it be for it to run a full resolution on the OG PS4, right? But there it is, clearly running at a higher resolution on the Pro. That makes me very optimistic that even games without a Pro mode will still see a tangible benefit! I guess PS4 Pro has some kind of pre-built function to render at a higher resolution? Maybe its dynamic and tries to go as high as it can while maintaining frame rate?

EDIT - Other effects I guess still have to be patched in, but I'm sold for the resolution anyway :D
