Sony VR Headset/Project Morpheus/PlayStation VR

I hope you're right about the release date.

It'll be interesting to see the BOM for both of the devices. I can't help but think the PSVR will actually be a fair amount more to manufacture, as the headset itself looks a little more premium and it has the larger box that probably got a little more hardware in it.

I should imagine the Oculus screens will be potentially more expensive though.
I'm really interested in the BOM too. The recent changes to the external processor should definitely raise the price of PSVR.

I think the biggest wild card remains the lenses. Up until now we were assuming low cost plastic molded lenses. But if they need an advanced material, or some deposition process, or etching a diffraction pattern with a photo-mask, etc... it might be over $100 just for the lenses. That is my expectations of oculus, since it's been confirmed they used a state of the art ultra-fine fresnel. Lens molding out of simple acrylic only allows a coarse fresnel, from what I read.

Still no idea what PSVR is using but I think the lenses might equally raise the price, more so than the screen or even the external module.

If Sony released foveated rendering update for PSVR [essentially, a 2nd headset], what do you think will be the focus:
- retaining 1080p screen, but since so much processing is freed games will be able to render much more detailed gameworld and complicated simulations
- adopting better screen [~1440p or better] that enables playing same spec-ed games but with more pleasing final look

?

Oculus have delayed their motion controllers to the second half of 2016. This will suck for multi platform VR developers who had planned to be compatible with all three Move-style controllers.

CES conference in progress. I'm losing hope they'll say anything new about psvr...

I always hated suits, but these are more annoying and horrible scripts than usual. I think my brain is bleeding, they better mention playstation soon.

They are releasing a fucking vinyl player. With extra bass.

and they call it PS -____-
what? Phinyl Slayer? Absolutely its not PlayStation.

rrrrgh back to topic,

so if everything comes as scheduled, PS VR and VIVE will be the first two headset that have motion control, then oculus rift hand-thing will come later?

but because lots of VR games are multiplatform, when oculu hand-thing got released, they can get the feature quckly ported from vive/psvr to oculus rift?

i dont really understand the different capabilities of vive/psvr/or motion controllers... most articles keep talking about the headset and audio part. im curious with the hands part. Especially with how the PS Move is using bluetooth while the other two use tailored special low latency communication. and how each of them handle occlusion.

although for local multiplayer, it seems sony is the most committed.

EDIT; and pardon my englsih. probably its really bad today.

From what I've seen on the Sony CES presentation, they just waved with the VR headset like they have done for the past year. Still no price, no date.
Still I think this "thing" will hit the market in Q2 before summer. On the other hand, that's before E3, Gamescom etc. Makes no sense either.

We might also be looking at a kind of unicorn or device full of feature creep (= it's never done).

still no price or release date?

Oculus Rift will ship in March for a [unreasonably high] price of $600 [that's without tax and shipping]. Hand controllers [bundled with 2nd camera] will be released later in the year for unknown price [won't be cheap I predict].

Sony just got handed a gift. We will see how will they react to this.

edit - mother of VR gods... official EU price is 700€ [plus 41€ for shipping to supported countries].

Wow, so Oculus is $599 for just the headset and no motion controllers. So much for $350 target and "The facebook acquisition will bring that price way down"

Anybody wants to readjust their price prediction for PSVR? :runaway:

It's quite obvious to me that Sony are simply waiting to see what Oculus will launch at, before committing to a price. Problem is, the higher OR is, the higher PSVR will be. $600 is pushing it a little.

Yes. 699 for Europe. Ouch! I was day one but now I'm less sure.

I tried to order one, but something went wrong yet I still got charged. Oh well, have to see what happens. I am guessing this is why the Vive Pre has been hiding the price as well. I am really upset now that I never grabbed the first kickstarter dev kit at $275 (was not sure it would ever make it). Sigh - fun stuff!

Ran their PC test application, which it said I failed for the GPU because I still have the on chip graphics turned on even though it never gets used, so the application never found my main GPU.

I was planning to get both, but this is going to be stupidly expensive. The race is on, so I assume Sony will announce a press event soon.

No, I'm not changing my sig. I will die with it kicking and screaming.

Doesn't sound right... They are not supposed to charge your card until the product ships. I managed to preorder and there is no charge on my credit card yet.

yeah, this is bad news for me - the PSVR will seem reasonable at 500-600 $/euro now :(

I also wonder now whether Sony could sell a PS4 + PSVR (incl. Move controller) for 699 euros provided the PS4 by itself costs 349 euros incl. tax. A peripheral costing more than the console itself makes no sense to me.

They can launch it at a higher price at launch because will be a market in demand for it at higher prices.
