Sony VR Headset/Project Morpheus/PlayStation VR

Doesn't sound right... They are not supposed to charge your card until the product ships. I managed to preorder and there is no charge on my credit card yet.
I never got any email, other than the bank notification - so I sent Oculus a support ticket.

Low volume will really piss off developers and might prevent any form of investment into VR outside of first/second parties.

Subsidized my ass. The XBone controller costs 60€ and I can't see the BoM of the HMD + camera going above 150€ tops.

During the kickstarter campaign, the company mentioned they wanted the price of the consumer version to be around $350, and they probably took that value from BoM + manufacturing + distribution + 30% margins.
This is almost twice that value, or even more for us dirty european peasants.

This price isn't good for VR. It'll hurt the industry's adoption rates and subsequently the dedication of game developers.

Just to point out how absurd the £500 price is, it's cheaper to buy an unlocked Samsung Galaxy S6 and a separate Gear VR.

You would have to consider also r&d cost and setting up the manufacturing as part of the cost that needs to be recouped. Charging just BOM would not be very good bisnes. Also lot of the parts are custom made. BOM, r&d and manufacturing could be a lot cheaper with off the shelf parts.

But I guess we will see where things are once htc ships vive. I'm not surprised if vive is 999$ or more based on price of the rift. This is of course assuming similar quality on build and parts.

It would be recouped through the 30% margins due to high volumes. The acquisition from Facebook was supposed to bring money for this initial investment and allow for a longer time to recover.

This price will destroy the product, the company and its popularity.

Where do you get 30% margin? AFAIK. all oculus stuff is pretty much custom starting from the 2 special made displays to lenses to lense adjustment mechanism etc. How would you know what the bom and cost for setting up the operation is?

30% is a typical margin usually stated by investors to get interesting return rates.

AFAIK the same lenses are being used in Gear VR, and that costs $100. IPS LCD displays are cheap as chips (just go to alibaba and see for yourself). I can't see them costing more than $20 each, at least not with Facebook behind making the necessary investment for large volumes.

Regardless of the BOM, the important point is market adoption. I think they fucked up as much as the PS3 $599 unveiling in 2006.

I can't wait to see the AMA they're doing later today. People are already furious because they built their PCs based on the announced minimum specs, and their budget was based on the reiterated $350 "ballpark", now they get this price at the last minute.

Oh for fuck's sake it's a handful of lenses, a couple of oled screens, molded plastic, and a PCB with a cheap microcontroller and a MEMS sensor.

Anyone who's seen actual prices of electronics and BoMs for product development knows the HMD can't cost enough to justify a $600 price tag.

They're going to rip him a new one and moderators will have a hard time silencing all the disappointed people who have been seeing the $350 price tag for years. Hundreds will be banned and the community will be broken.
The /r/oculus mod team just deleted the thread called "$600 is not the same as $350", which was the #2 on reddit's first page. That's how far they're willing to go.

Problem is that we would like to estimate both the cost and retail of PSVR, and the best reference we have seems to be oculus (as of today), we were waiting for it.

This unveiling seriously restarts the discussion, because whatever caused Oclulus to move from 350 to 600 would probably apply to PSVR too. Something went wrong.
