Sony Playstation E3 2013 Events

it's amazing to me how much a difference $100 makes. everything was looking good for ms till 399.

something about it seems bigger than the actual difference. as if 399 is that disposable income purchase, and 499 is just some pie in the sky super expensive price. 399 hits some psychological barrier i think, maybe like they used to claim $200 did.

And as I pointed out, it's even a hollow 399 when you consider now people will be paying 100's more over the life of the system for online. If anything PS4 got a price rise in practical terms for most people.

but i guess that illustrates part of the genius of pay online systems, they arent taken into account with the cost of the system.

I said the same thing last night. how did they manage $399? Has the component market turned that quickly in Sony's favor since January?

Sony made every right choice with their chipset and RAM design. Lightning in a bottle.

So, what's the XBO's cost over the life of the system then? Online pay is free? Media services are no longer paywalled?

X1 is obviously more expensive, by $100.

But PS4 is more expensive than PS3 if you're an online gamer, because you now have to pay $60 a year for online gaming. That's what he's saying. People are excited about the launch price being cheaper than PS3, but really it isn't. More and more games are going to be online games with co-op or multiplayer.

I didn't get the impression Ranger's was in any way making a cost comparison with the PS3.

And its $50 a year, not $60.

EDIT

You're specific point, however, is still completely valid and I'm not necessarily disagreeing there.

This isn't the thread for comparisons! There's a business discussion thread, and a tech thread, and all sorts of other lovely threads.

Sony - EA Relations

Was there any EA published big game showing during the conference? I remember Ubi, Activision, Take 2, WB, SE but no EA game.

MS got the traditionally Sony shown FPS Battlefield (in addition to it's typical CoD) for its conference, plus the exclusivity deal with the new Respawn game, not to mention Fifa during the reveal event.

EA announced the end of online pass thing, which doesn't make as much sense on Sony's platform now.

It feels like EA-Sony relations are far less than perfect , or is it just me?

No it is not you. I think EA was one of the oublishers who probably backed Microsoft on the DRM strategy. In one of the interviews with Peter Moore, you could very clearly see that EA was taken aback by the huge press backlash over it however, and I bet publishers are strongly rethinking their strategies. This is interesting, because it could have just as well gone the other way, where the big three force Sony to implement it.

Well I paid $600 for my PS3 so even if I pay $50 a year for 4 years of online gaming, I break even.

But the money isn't the issue. I'm skeptical that PSN Plus will be worth paying for. Downloads are slow, communications suck, etc.

Even if those services were reliable and easy to use, I don't like the idea of paying for it. Historically, PC games didn't charge to play online and Playstation (PS2 and PS3) hasn't either.

If it wasn't for the online charge, I probably would have placed my preorder yesterday.

As it is, I can see spending my $400-500 on a mobile device upgrade instead. No you won't get the same gaming experience (though Apple released some SDK for supporting controllers for iOS 7) but in the past year, I've gamed more on mobile devices than consoles because these things are always at my side, whereas the console, I have to go to a specific TV and dedicate time, wait for it to boot up, download updates, etc.

I was still interested in next gen but I'm not so sure now ...

Early adopters are going to pay for at least five years, probably more. So $250 at a minimum. It's a significant change. PS4 is not cheaper than PS3. Shows how well that type of pricing policy works. That said, I have no real complaints about paying for online gaming if it's of high quality.

I would have liked to have seen more talk about PSN showing chat, matchmaking etc. Do they have group chat, or groups (parties)? The game-centric style of these events bothers me, especially when they're mostly showing multiplatform stuff. They're basically showing me a long advertisement for a product I'd be able to play on any gaming platform, which is information I can get from gametrailers.

I guess I understand why they didn't show how Eye aids with the UI (because they've abandoned it). Still, I've got to search for the UI vid now, because I want to see it. It should have been in the conference. A good example is friends and game invites. How do I invite friends to play games with me? Is it easier than before? What does matchmaking look like? These are all things I want to know that go a long way to making the product seem like a good investment. MS and Sony both totally dropped the ball on that. Compare to the conference Apple did for iOS 7, and these game conferences look silly.

Same stand. See what they have for PS+ this fall. Price is a function of perceived value.

For existing PS+ subscribers, it makes no difference.

5 years x 12 months x 2 games (or 4 for me as Vita owner) ... I am not daying you're wrong, I have payed Live long enough, but this can be easily interpreted in two ways. ;)

I'm not convinced they're going to dedicate infrastructure for online play either. Most games are going to be peer to peer online.

I remember back in the day, using IP addresses to connect to people after setting up matches through ICQ and AIM.

That's the crux of it, they could let you connect to other gamers on your own but they want to charge $50 for friends list and matchmaking.

Probably true, but the moment they bought Gaikai, it would mean that extensive server infrastructure is in their future. They will need economy of scale for that operation.

The content owners are going downstream to own the distribution. It's like in the old days, the large studios went down and buy the DVD logistics companies to own more of the value chain.

How isthat size comparison possible?
So the PS4 is smaller cheaper an more powerful, I thought that wasn't possible. Are we missing something, is the PS4 not as powerful as originally thought?

it also has a built in powersupply and not an external brick, if I'm not mistaken.

How is it that both the PS4 and XB1 almost look identical I'm looking a two separate companies designing pretty much the same looking console. High gloss and flat black seems to be the growing trend I think that even the new Mac Pro's have the same color combos.

Yes it took them the best part of a day to change some figures on a slide. Seriously does anyone think about this stuff before they post it?

the comment about the delay was a play on words because some people in this thread were joking about that earlier...

don't take shit so seriously
