Probably HDD suppliers are abandoning 60GB 2.5" HDD.Why just a 20GB increase? It's not much at all, but it's cool that the price is still 599 and not increased.
July 9 (Bloomberg) -- Sony Corp. will cut the price of the PlayStation 3 video-game console in the U.S. and Canada by $100 in a bid to double sales of the player, which has trailed rivals since its introduction last year.
A PlayStation 3 with a 60-gigabyte hard drive will sell for $499 starting today, a 17 percent discount, Jack Tretton, head of Tokyo-based Sony's U.S. games business, said in an interview. A new 80-gigabyte model will go on sale in August for $599.
Sony predicts the price cut will double U.S. sales of the player, Tretton said. The move will take customers from Microsoft Corp., forcing the Xbox 360 maker to drop the price of its $479 Elite model, analysts said. Nintendo Co.'s Wii, the top-selling console at $249, probably won't be affected.
``The price cut should take more away from Microsoft,'' said Richard Doherty, an analyst at the research firm Envisioneering Group in Seaford, New York. ``A lot of sales that would have gone to the Xbox Elite will go to PlayStation.''
So what do you want exactly? 60GB for $399? That's ridiculous unless Xbox 360 Premium gets a price drop to $299 as PS3 has Blu-ray (+ 5 discs bundles) after all that can differentiate itself from Xbox. They don't have to abandon their premium image of the brand because it will work positive when the price is not too high. SCE can just wait and see what happens after the 60GB price cut, it's not like many important softwares arrive in summer. Later they can make Heavenly Sword Pack with 80GB PS3 for $600. The $100 difference from the 60GB version is just fair at that point.

(and motorstorm)$100 price drop for 3 months then back to $599 with only a 20GB increase in storage. What is Sony doing?
It is like sony and MS are having a contest to see who can screw up the worst. Reggie at nintendo HQ has to be laughing his ass of right now. I am sorry the price cut was a great idea the new sku stupid. The PS3 is once again 599 us dollars they need to get the away from the over priced stigma. Even worse is the new SKU is a complete rip off 40 dollars for 20 gigs and no EE/GS this is the most expensive tard pack ever. Instead of trying to keep the price point high sony should be working on getting it down. This leaves me little hope of a 399 PS3 this year.
Is nintendo the only ones who get it this generation? People do not want to spend 399+ for a gaming console.
So you think a bundle pack is a standard SKU that defines the overpriced stigmaIt is like sony and MS are having a contest to see who can screw up the worst. Much more effective getting major press coverage than the 'Elite' move IMHOAgreed.
This worked out really terrible for Sony, simply because it happened to leak out first as a "price drop" and then we got the rest of the story. Had they been able to control the message it would have looked a lot better.

I don't get it, drop the price a solid $100 bucks then 3 months later raise the price again by $100 to $599 but only give 20GB of extra storage. The Elite now sounds like a good upgrade for $80.
I am not sure that is accurate. Not only PC approach is questionable in console space, they aren't really upgrading the console.Sony is essentially borrowing PC economics and parts here (Basically mark down old models and introduce new models at the same price).

Not a true price drop? They got major press coverage, but the initial reaction on message boards tonight was anger and dismay on learning it's not a true price drop..
I doubt Xbox 360 is associated with the $480 price tag of Elite in the mind of most sane people.Yes I do because people will associate the PS3 with its most expensive SKU no matter the value just like they do with the 360.
I think retailers are happy with this news. As for Elite, it didn't bring a price drop of Premium. They got major press coverage, but the initial reaction on message boards tonight was anger and dismay on learning it's not a true price drop..
Elite yes, was ill received on message boards also.

If I am retailer I am not happy at all. Since I have to stock another 599 SKU that will not sell. Everyone would of been happy if they would of just anounced a price cut and left at that. If they wanted to introduce a new SKU for the future fine the 80 gig should of been 499 and give a free game with the 60 gig version to even it out. That way PS3 pricing goes down ward instead of being the same.
I think many associate price with the high end model when a person spends a premium they are going to go for the best.
I just don't see how this is not a positive move by Sony?
Sony have a few million 60GBs lying around. And they're supposedly making 1.2 million PS3's a month. So in a few months of selling 60GBs at $500, they'll have stockpiled 80 GBs. Why not stop making things, sell out PS3s, get a shortage in the Summer even to show it's a 'desirable item', then refill the channels in time for the big games? It's probably along the lines of what's being theorized - the 60GB will likley be sold at $500 until the inventory is cleared, after which the 80GB unit will probably be dropped to that price point (sans Motorstorm).
