Sony: PlayStation 3 price drop

So what does this mean for UK pricing?

$100 dollars is like £50 over here right (after retailers add their markup plus VAT etc..)?

So that puts it somewhere around £375 if i'm not mistaken?

That's still pretty steep I guess..

I think if they can afford to squeeze off an extra £15 then they'd be in a great position!

Psychologically £360 doesn't sound to big of a deal and would put the PS3 in a great place to make a nice big sales stink leading onwards towards the end of the year..

Pls make it happen Sony!!

I think it will sell almost as much as the 360 at $499.

I think they can expect a bit more than the 360 sales performance, as the reliability of the PS3 is better by far... And better games are finally showing up.
Lets hope that Sony will finaly communicate correctly...... No more Kaz Hirai please.

Production was never stopped.

Places that had demand still received them to sell, though i suspect they may of had to do some arm twisting to keep getting them.

Although i think their game library is still far too weak for people to care much about the reduced price, though it is a very nice gesture. With the current movie deal it looks much better as a Blu-Ray player which isnt going to help its sales a whole lot still. I think Microsoft really hit the highest acceptable price point on the head for most people with the premium at $399. The next step for Sony is to bundle a couple games with it. Resistance and Motorstorm would be fantastic at 499. Dare i say they'd be back in the game?

I think ebgames just has leftover 20GB stock.

A £50 UK price drop at best. Doubt that'll make much difference. It's not really moving the machine into another price bracket. It'd still be up there in the 'way too expensive' area, rather than the 'just too expensive' area!

If they could shave nearer £100 off, they'd do a lot better. And they wouldn't need a price drop for that. Only a better adherence to currency conversion rates, and launch the 20GB model. They'd be down to £250 then, and PS3's would become hot property. Perhaps with a psychological boost to spend more than people would. Kinda like most people won't spend £30,000 on a car, let alone £60,000 on a Ferrari. But if Ferrari's dropped in price to £30,000 perhaps the number shelling out more than usual would go up, as the higher price stretched their upper limit?

SCEA officially discontinued the 20GB pack some time ago. It was only ever available in very limited quantities, and for a lot of people it was tarnished by a 'tard pack' mentality, even if that was very off-base (happy 20-gigger here - well, soon to be 160-gigger :)).

Also, posted on GAF, the price will apparently be reduced to $549 in Canada, or the same price as the Elite.

As for Europe, I wouldn't expect a cut. We're much sooner after launch, and Sony is apparently happy enough for sales there right now, overall. I think there'll be a cut there by xmas though, easily.

Wow no cut for EU? That's terrible. Sony really loves screwing Europe, and yet you guys repay them by being arguably their best market right now. Doesn't seem too fair. Did EU ever get that PSP drop?

Now I think the big question is, will Sony cut another $100 before 2008?

The Elite looks much less appealing with the 60gb PS3 at $499.

Only if you look on them as pieces of your home theater - then the PS3 is a more capable box. If you see them as gaming rigs, the PS3 still is at a severe disadvantage (and will be even at the same price, for at least an year from now).

So what's the deal with B3D news essentially dropping dupe threads into the forum (for example, Titanios thread in this case)? And I dont know which one I'm supposed to patronize..

If they hold on their 1$ = 1€ conversion in my country it will become cheaper than the PS2 in it first two years.

When the PSP pricedrop (169$) was announced the price was dropped here to 169€.

Yes we got the same pricedrops. PSP 169$ = 169€

Unfortunately, if Europe is their best market, it only encourages them to wait on a pricedrop. You have to admit, it seems a whole lot less likely they'll cut now in Europe when it's only out 4 months here, compared to the 8 it's been out in the US. I think one in the autumn seems pretty likely though.

It'll be interesting to see if there's any cut in Japan, though.

Now I think the big question is, will Sony cut another $100 before 2008?

Unlikely. A mini-drop later seems possible, though, maybe another $20-$50. I think $449 would be a nice sweetspot for PS3 this year, if they can stretch to that at all. Put them more firmly in "four hundred and something something dollars" territory rather than "five hundred dollars" or the "four hundred dollars" that 399 would allow, while costing them a lot more. Even $479 might be worthwhile. Particularly if they bundle something with it.

That blu-ray deal is excellent, though. Even if you have no interest in HD movies, you could flog the titles and get back a good $80-90, perhaps, on your purchase.

Maybe not a pricecut for europe, but then some weeks ago I found the PS3 was Euro 555 at one of the biggest media chains (Media Markt) over here. That's already close to a 100$ pricedrop anyway.

So, we'll see.

"No price cut" the president says.

Sony Has `No Plans' to Cut PlayStation 3 Price, President Says

By Hiroshi Suzuki and Yoshinori Eki

July 6 (Bloomberg) -- Sony Corp., the world's biggest maker of game consoles, said it has no current plans to lower the price of the PlayStation 3 after Web sites reported some U.S. retailers will offer discounts from next week.

``We have no immediate plans as of now'' for price cuts, President Ryoji Chubachi said today in an interview in Tokyo, where Sony is based. Any change in the game console's price ``is a matter'' for Sony's game unit, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., he said.

The threads are created automatically. It's a way to let you know what out there / on the front-page. As for which to use, that's totally up to you. If there's a prior thread you can use that if you want to. If not, just use the news thread.

Unfortunately the UK price dropped to £135 - not really worth bothering with.

I guess he's peeved this news is leaked before they could astound E3 with it. And now MS are hurrying around working on their E3 announcement of a price-cut too. Who's key-note is first? :D

I want a price war... $500 is still too much. MS needs a price drop. usually competition breeds good products but this gen we have the three stooges engineering consoles. MS can't engineer one to run longer than 6 months, Sony can't make one that doesn't require getting a second job, and Nintendo just decided to recycle stock gamecube silicon. :(

Sony severly misjudged how much the average person in NA was willing to pay, especially when their competition made a machine that costs less and graphically matches it.
