Sony Home - The official thread*

Visited Home again after my trip. I don't know if it's me, but it seems that there are more people in Home these days. May post some screenshots later. I used to see 10+ folks in the central plaza. These days, I often see about 30 (A space can hold up to 32, or 64 for special event)

Took a few pictures. The new camera doesn't capture speech bubbles anymore, which is a shame coz some of the comments were pretty funny when people saw me taking photo:

I don't see that many people usually.

Found this while looking for Home scoop...

Watch the 2011 EVO World Finals Live in PlayStation Home:
http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/07/25/watch-the-2011-evo-world-finals-live-in-playstation-home/

The largest fighting game competition in the world is right around the corner and we are giving you, the PlayStation Home community, a front-row seat to witness the no-holds barred action of the 2011 EVO World Finals.

From Friday, July 29th until the final battle on Sunday, July 31st we will be streaming the event live from the Rio Resort in Las Vegas to the PlayStation Home Theater. Watch as competitors from around the globe duke it out on PS3 across five competitions: Marvel vs Capcom 3, Tekken 6, Mortal Kombat, BlazBlue: Continuum Shift II, and Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition. Players include 2009 and 2010 Street Fighter champion Daigo Umehara who will attempt an unprecedented “3-peat” victory.

...

I usually hate to go to the Home theater coz it forces you to redownload the space/theater when they change the movie. This is (still) wrong. It should be able to stream a different movie to the same space.

Anyway, here's EVO championship for the uninitiated (like me !):

That's tomorrow.

What's more neat ?

Lookie lookie what I found...

Home v1.55 leaked:

1.55 beta forum here but we have no access:
http://community.us.playstation.com/thread/3878517?start=0&tstart=0

From the video, it looks snappier than the current version and they cleaned up the startup experience. I hope that's the newbie screens. Would hate to go through all these screens every time.

I still hope for a Vita "Activity" like service/screen in Home.

EDIT: Me think they should get the UI designer to polish the color scheme for the Navigator menu.

I'm getting a hint of maybe a UI overhaul that prepares Home for 3D support, but we'll see. Good improvement anyway.

I thought the same thing (because it would be  !) but backed off. The Home games may not be 3D-enabled, it's kinda weird to take our 3D glasses on and off when we enter/exit a PS Home game.

If they have time, I would love it if they can:
* Continue to improve speed and capacity.
* Implement the god-damn 2D UI so Vita and other Sony devices can link to Home backend
* Port Vita services to PS3 (e.g., Rename "Life with Playstation" to "Near" and integrate the location-based service to the spinning globe). Would be very cool and functional to see wandering Vitas and other PS3 friends on that globe. Also jumpstart Vita experience with the help of PS3 userbase. They can mark special events like E3 or the EVO competition on the map. So people can cross-link into Home when these special locations are clicked on.

THEN, work on 3D.

EDIT:
If they don't want to implement a 2D version of Home (yet ?), then allow users to create their own Home Spaces (hosted on http servers like the current Home architecture). Let people spread the goodness of Home and transform the web into a huge 3D world. The virtual items, games and economy can still be controlled by Sony.

Yeah, trivial to come over to US Home. They also showed the EVO final yesterday but I was with my family. :)

I found some interesting new costumes too. ^_^

Pretty cool to see the transformation in-game, so I bought one.

It has custom fighting and power-up animations. The Home folks should totally do a melee game in the 3D world. I'd play it.

EDIT: I remember the Red Bull Air Race game allows the users to pilot a plane freely in a Home Space too.

Sony redesigns PS HOME
Sony is evolving PlayStation Home into a place for gamers to both socialize and play social games. “This means that Home itself is going to become a game. The first things you see when you get into Home are games.”

The new design focuses on Home’s strength: a core group of hardcore gamers who share a love for games. By giving those gamers a more intense game experience inside Home.

The central plaza of Home will now be replaced by a futuristic transit place called The Hub (pictured at top). The Hub integrates games, quests, community events and user-generated content.

First I had PSHome installed on PS3 but it really was like an avatar chat + 3d Habbo Hotel world. All I cared was a chess boards on a cetral plaza it was a very good online game and for free. Since then I have deleted the home icon. Maybe I get my chess game back this fall.

It's still like a avatar chat + 3D Habbo Hotel world now. But they added a gaming layer so that the games can be played right in the world. The Scribble Shooter game cabinet is rather charming.

The new Home announcement sounds like Home v1.55 mentioned above. They have been beta-testing it for some time now.

I wonder if the new client is still based on HTTP. If they stay on HTTP, might as well fully utilize its advantages. Apple built live video streaming out of HTTP protocol so that providers can rely on the same web infrastructure (e.g., Port 80 to clear firewalls easily, shared web server farms, etc.). Each stream can be split into multiple small files/segments. According to one of their patents, saving the first segment on the local HDD allows them to start playing a song or movie right away, while the other segments stream via HTTP to the client if the user continues to listen to the same song segment.

If Sony stays on web-based tech for Home, they should leverage the net (web contents/relevance, communities, traffic, and other devices) to spread PS Home. Otherwise, doing it over a proprietary level streaming protocol may be easier and more performant. I kinda hope they continue to research and exploit HTTP-based tech though.

It's cool to have people build HTTP-based Home spaces throughout the net.

A little disappointed that the new Home will feature such a static city structure. Reminds me of AOL's graphical frontend and Apple's eWorld:

Was hoping they start from a clean slate. Keep the original structure minimalist, and allow users to populate the space depending on who's signed in to the instance.

The static cityscape seems wasteful. Home developers can probably use the space for more Avatar interactivity and games.

Would love a closer look. Would be fun to integrate it with Near or the "Life with Playstation" globe so that I can choose a Home instance based on geography.... or even interests.

EDIT: It would be _bad_ if the Home team incur the overhead of HTTP and yet do not utilize its strength at all.

At some level, if you have a framework and community to gamify the entire Internet, it seems more interesting and powerful than facebook or google+ games.

At some point, turning the Playstation bronze, silver, gold and platinum trophies into currency and points will also help Playstation Home. The static 3D backdrop seems meaningless in comparison. Community and dynamic contents should be the keywords for PS Home.

R3 public space coming to PS Home:
http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011...ly-americans-and-deadliest-warrior-come-home/

This Thursday, September 8th will see a new Resistance 3 space invade Home, bringing its own public space complete with mini-games, rewards and more. What better way to celebrate the launch of Insomniac’s well-reviewed shooter than to suit up, win some rewards, and deck out your personal space with the spoils of war?

[Why is this not part of the "Global Resistance" Facebook game ?]

... and extended maintenance period:

everyone take note—tomorrow from approximately 9am Pacific/ noon Eastern, Home will be taken offline for a few hours of extended maintenance after the publish window. When it comes up, be sure to keep a healthy distance from the rabid wandering Chimera as you find clues, pick up items, and earn rewards.

Wonder if it's related to the Home v1.55 upgrade, due this fall.

Fracture, A Short Film Debuting In PS Home:
http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2011/09/09/fracture-a-short-film-debuting-in-ps-home/

Greetings one and all. My name is Ashley Wing, an independent filmmaker from the UK based in Devon.
Me and my crew are just coming to the end of the long post-production process on our sci-fi short film ‘Fracture’. The grade (colouring of the film) only has a few days left and then we render our final export before it begins its journey to the Home Cinema.

Let me begin by telling you a little bit about myself and why I proposed an online premiere at PlayStation Home cinema.

...

Home to me is about many things – it’s about sharing, communicating, self expression. Gamers are experiencing an expanding, living, breathing community. I think the idea of creating an online facility where friends can sit down to watch a short film, and then talk about it afterwards, is bringing the community experience even closer.

...

‘Fracture’ is a short film produced by Fxhome Limited. It was pitched as a world-wide community project – a ‘no-to low-budget’, non-profit movie.

We had a five-day shoot in a small industrial unit at Henderson business park in Norwich, England, before the project entered a lengthy post production, with many effects being created by our vfx supervisor, Sebastien Regert.

...

Why not bring the entire library of Crackle original videos to XMB's new "My Channel" ? ^_^

Would be great if we can see the LBP2, inFamous 2, Modnation Racers' user level videos in "My Channel" too.

If Home wants to attract movie crowd, they should integrate better with IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes, and related big websites. Would be fun if I can see these website visitors in Home as they surf the sites.

If Home's community angle makes a difference, then why not channel BD-Live server traffic into Home as well ? It's the movie buff community that's interesting, it doesn't really matter if the client is a BR player, or a PS3 Home app, or something else.

How to Apply the 1.55 Patch

If you are upgrading from an old version of Home (1.40 or earlier) then when you attempt to apply the 1.55 patch please wait for the orange “hard drive activity” light to stop flashing on your PS3 before commencing the patching process.

NEW FEATURES

Start-Up

Improved the layout, design, color scheme and text of the start-up flow.

The start-up flow will now display a variety of information depending on how recently you last visited PlayStation Home.

Wardrobe and Furniture Browser

When you are browsing through a category of items in the wardrobe or furniture browser we now display the name of the object you have highlighted.

There is an option in the Menu Pad under “Options > Settings > Personal > Clothing / Furniture Names” to change this behavior:

Off: Switches the display of names off.
Selected: Displays the name of the selected object only (default).
All: Displays names for all objects.
You can click [L3] to display more information about the highlighted object. This will pop up a menu showing:
Name.
Description.
Image.
Whether it is a purchase, reward or part of the default inventory.
Date of acquisition (if relevant).
In addition to the name changes the overall speed of the wardrobe and furniture browser has been significantly increased.

General

Added an option to manually clear the cache of data that Home creates on your HDD. This can sometimes resolve problems that you might be having. You can find it in the Menu Pad under “Options > Settings > Personal > Clear Cache”.

IMPROVEMENTS

Menu Pad

There is an option to view “Help” from the carousel on the Menu Pad. This is only available to new users.
There is an option to “Redecorate” on the carousel on the Menu Pad. This is only available when you are in your Personal Space or a Clubhouse that you own (i.e. somewhere that you can place furniture).

Loading Screen Tips

Different loading screen tips are now shown depending on how many times you have visited PlayStation Home.

General

Continued work to improve stability.

Sounds like the same old thing with incremental improvement. -_-

I think Sony hand the baton over to a manager too early. He'd have a revenue/profit target strung on his neck, and be too afraid to change once it's earning some $$$.

Home really needed the loading time improvements and the other changes are quite useful. Hope the framerate also improved, it was getting extremely choppy in some spaces.

The only other thing I wish they'd change is the controller dead zone (make it smaller) and fix the locked camera while walking/running.

But this is not the big 2.0 update that we're supposed to get later this year ... ?

@Dungeonscaper: what are you talking about? Loading time stuff was improved to a sufficient level ages ago. This has nothing to do with that - they just made the startup look a little nicer, basically!

Hmm... you may be right but v1.55 has been under beta test for sometime now. At the moment, I'm thinking v1.55 is that major revamp under the hood. Would love to be surprised by a new 2.0 build though.

Load time has indeed improved significantly but I think the experience can be enhanced further by avoiding unnecessary home space download.

v1.55 is up. Nope, it's not the PS Home revamp Sony talked about above. Looks like we will have at least one more Home update later this year.

v1.55 doesn't really change much presentation-wise. Only startup screen was updated. I still see places where Home stutters a little.
