Sony Home - The official thread*

They mentioned they are going to follow the gmail model, so perhaps in the future, the current beta owners will be able to send out invites to their friends.

It's not surprising for them to target active PSN users though. People who don't play online games, should not be in the beta.
So they're ditching the idea of having Home double as a lifestyle experience? They're going to drop Dress, shopping, etc. because they no longer care for the mum and teenage daughter demographic? I guess if the beta is still small, it makes sense to focus. Otherwise if they're wanting to actually test final usage, surely they ought to try to reach some of the broader demographic to see how they use it?

The problem I see with starting with a population is the same with online games. You end up with people who have already formed social groups and habits, who have set the feel of the place. Then inviting other people into that, they'll feel at odds. This way, I know the core culture of Home is going to be Online Gamer, and not Family Unit, which is changing my expectations.

They are focusing on gamers now. The rest will come later.

The key to attract non-gamers are layman services that interest them. If they don't have a suitable service, it would be counter-productive to get them on board now.

My guess is the next wave (after gamers) are the HD movie buff :)
Sony can think of BD-Live services, or movie-related games to draw them in.

Female members are important to the growth and diversity of the community. I expect Sony to do something special for them (e.g. Dress). It is true that PS Home risks being seen as a gamers-only club. It's a problem Sony will need to address once they have established the gamer community.

I'm nearly on the PS3 everyday playing tons of games but I am not a multi-player kind of guy. Mostly because I have different taste in games than my friends so we never play online together. Glad to see things are now being rolled out and expanded to users though.

:D It may be best for you this way: Forget it until Sony launches the public beta.

I am tracking it as an on-going project or trend. I think I missed this last time: http://blog.wired.com/games/2008/07/playstation-hom.html

According to a Sony representative, PlayStation Home's public spaces will be limited to your regional location. You will be able to visit anyone's private space though, which is a small consolation I guess.

While gamers may meet each other internationally via private spaces, public events and spaces will be region specific.

I read somewhere that the region lock is detected via hardware id. There may be valid advertiser reasons for them to region lock Home public spaces. Or Sony's Home developers may be swarmed with work. Whatever the reasons, I hope Sony reimplements the region lock mechanism for Home because many people import their PS3s.

This is especially problematic for PSPs since travellers can buy the portable from anywhere in the world. I assume Home will come to PSP some day.

I have given up on the beta, i used to have the betatrial Home Page as my ... Homepage.

I dropped it when it became clear that Sony didn´t have the faintest idea on it´s release. I expect it sometime 2009-2010, at least there a chance i wont get disappointed.

I'm in on the beta now (must be a heavy PSN user, not sure in what way) and I must say it is all very bland: limited costumes, limited furniture, limited areas.

Do you have the feeling that this should have been a ps4 launch feature and not a ps3 feature. It seems to me that its to big of a scope to be done so quickly

No - I understand the point of it. It is just an extremely confined area you seem to be in with no content at all to customise it (the only furniture you can put out is a sofa, a lamp, a couple of chair types - all white too). As these appeared/were touted to be the strong points, it doesn't seem very good.

Haven't they been showing off builds that they have not sent to the users? I wonder when the beta people will get the new builds.

I believe the old beta users are asked to download a new client too.

As far as I know, the focus for the initial launch is the game services. The final content will probably remain underwrapped until launch (or close to launch).

HOME To Include Adult Only Areas

Playtations' Home becomes more clear, with the news that the service will host over 18 areas where restricted trailers and possibly casinos will dwell.
If these areas resemble those near my home that have the same services, it might be best to to move.

During the recent Edinburgh Interactive Festival, Peter Edward, director of the PlayStation Home Platform Group, and Jamie McDonald, VP of Sony Worldwide Studios revealed some rather interesting morsels related to Sony’s eagerly anticipated virtual life experience Home to Steve Boxer.

i like the idea of a Casino, who wants to play Hold Em' :D

I wouldn't count on a Casino in US though. Some gambling bill passed last October forbids US financial institutions from processing online gambling transactions. e.g., US Visa cards cannot be used to top up online gambling accounts. So the casino, if implemented, would either be a Europe + Japan service or a free US service.

Thats too bad patsu, if it ever happened I wouldn't mind taking all your money of you in a little game of hold em'

 Some European banks issue credit cards to US residents to bypass this bill. If the casino is not hardware-id region locked like Playstation Home, there is still a slim chance.

PayPal does not accept online gambling transaction today. As long as the points are used as currencies, they may still be affected. The gambling regulations I have seen usually coined "Money's Worth" to cover any systems that deal with $$$.

Or just limit it to something you can only use to buy clothes or something. Or maybe just trophies. And you can always play a game and then give each other money over the bank voluntarily. Little can stop that. ;)
