Sony Home - The official thread*

Just as some of us expected...

T_T [size=-2]This is depressing~~~[/size] [Burst into tears]

PPHHHHIIIILLLLLLL ! Cooommmmeee baack !

[Rolling echoes in the mountain ranges]

[Wipe tears off]

... if we give Home enough time and imagination, it can make a difference.

I was hoping Insomniac would make a sniper mini-game in the RFOM lobby though. Usually right after a session, I hoped I could replay a segment (e.g., when I was out-sniped), or practise more sniping while the next game is being scheduled.

On another news...

An EA developer asked, “Why should I develop for Home ?”

Playing Devil's advocate here:

Put yourself in the shoes of a 3rd party multiplatform developer. With the current state of the PS3's game library where needing to differentiate yourself from competition is not yet enough of a compelling reason, why should you develop for Home? Seems a valid question from that perspective, no? Keep in mind the extra work that developers like Infinity Ward had to do just to reach feature parity in online functionality with what the 360 had with Live and it becomes even more questionable. That having been said, if not having Home content as a value-add begins to hurt sales, that's a different story.

Anyway, all cool stuff. It's going to be necessary for 1st parties to lead the way here and this is a good start.

Sure, if one looks at the cost, accounting, workload and ROI perspectives, the "Why" question is always valid. But it is not enough. I also find the "How (to do it cheaply, how to save/make more money, ...)", "Why not ?" and "What if" questions equally compelling.

Home also includes online gaming components (and beyond) for developers to flesh out their network game experience.

impressive. anything that adds value to game-play is a good thing. third party software will implement this in order to compete with first party titles (licensed exclusives such as madden obvious exceptions).

The SingStore look would be a big step backwards, at least if they mean the current SingStore.
SingStore today is just some simple grid 3 x 4 or something, having "Pop" "Rock", "Dance" "Genre" etc categories, giving access to sub-page which is similar simple grid.
Here's what it looks like: http://www.wonderwallweb.com/story-800-Latest-singstore-songs-announced.html

I think the current PS Store is more convenient, better looking and informative.

Or do they mean the look will be more like the main song selection screen in SingStar, which is very reminiscent to Apple's "Cover Flow".
Looks good, but I don't think it would be comfortable to use with lots of content and different categories.

Likely though, it will be tailored to suit the PS Store, with the general style of "SingStar"

It looks more usable than the current store. In the old version, I need to nudge the pointer (s-l-o-w-l-y) using the analog stick, or navigate using the D-pad. When the screen is cluttered/littered with small objects, the D-pad becomes somewhat inconsistent/unpredictable. When I press ->, it will jump to an arbitrary item to the right. So instead of performing a high level task like download "MLB The Show demo", I ended up doing a series of small meaningless actions (e.g., -> -> -> -> blah) to hop over to the download button.

If they align the buttons and keep the layout simple, it should be a boon to usability. Even better if they assign special buttons to commonly used functions (e.g., L1 to go back). While they are at it, increase the sensitivity of SIXAXIS so that the pointer can speed across the screen.

I like the stats in the current store (e.g., Top x downloads). I reckon they will embed them in the first page, or in a dedicated page.

That Warhawk system would be fantastic and a real advance of online gaming. If games can offer extra support features like that which help with the team experience, they'll have a stronger online gaming platform, and Home would have a real reason for being! It also shows the flexibility of Home as being way more than just a 3D lobby. The big question is whether other companies would use it in interesting ways. I expect plenty will.

Having a map and drawing strategies on it makes preparing for a clanwar a lot easier. We now have do this with e-mails. Telling people which squad their in, where they should go, what to do and what everyone else is doing so they can work a team. And then there is always someone who didn't get or read their e-mail. Hopefully we can also take the map in-game. As for third party's adding this feature, I seriously doubt they will. There are tons of features they can copy from Resistance and Warhawk that would make their games beter, but so far they haven't bothered to ad them. And since they most likely wont have dedicated servers their already offering a worse experience than Sony's first party devs.

Even a telestrator or a shared white board would be useful, for things like Madden or any of the other sports games.

You're right, EA won't bother and it may not be a loss for many here on this board.

But sports games, especially Madden, get their share of online activity.

Perhaps Home has some basis support for that. So we can have the same setup across all games and developers have the option to ad on to this for a game specific needs.

It would benefit Sony to create template services that 3rd parties can pretty much cut-and-paste features into lobbies. This could be expanded over time and lobbies even updated at minimal fuss to the developers.

That's right. The first people Sony should hit are the first parties and the middleware guys. The magazine folks, the content providers and developers who are keen can come next.

If it's easy to do enough, many Asian companies who want to get into the gaming industry (but without enough skill sets to do a full game) may come in.

The beauty of Home is: Not everything must be big. Even an existing theme song or any small media can be assimilated and spread in Home seamlessly.

EDIT:

If the TRC mandates game launching (with party support), then technically it may be possible for someone else (e.g., IGN, 1UP, shared whiteboard operator, other middleware folks, EA's lesser development teams) to implement the clan/war room.

Best regards,
The PlayStation.com Community Team"

I wonder what extra functionality is being added. It seems that Sony is working hard to integrate Internet into the Playstation experience. From the outside, it almost looks like SCEA is leading the Blu-ray war, while SCEE is spearheading the Playstation Network + Home charge. Is SCEI in charge of the system hardware (RemotePlay, DLNA, XMB, and anything going into the firmware etc.) ? Please say Playstation Eye and SIXAXIS are part of the strategic plan too.

EDIT: And SOE reports directly to Kaz, so it seems that they want a single global online community as opposed to separate brick-n-mortar presences in 3 regions. Then again, there have been talks that Japan will get Playstation Home first. So may be they will still keep the online effort separate.

Hmm... something's cooking. Someone has released a branding ad for Playstation Network (and Home ? because the furniture changed while he was online).

It's for the Playstation people since no one else would understand the advertisement.

Probably both download and firmware. New areas may need to be downloaded from somewhere (The new PSN Store ?).
