Sony: 2M PS3s shipped

Hmmm

How does this make Europeans feel? I saw another quote like this a week or so bcak where Sony PR mentioned WW as well in regards to the PS3 launch (ironic quote for another day) so it seems they are now fashioning of the PS3 launch as a worldwide launch. Hmmm

They are? I didn't get that from this article. Rather, it seemed to me to just stress that the PS2 was launched in Japan first, whereas the PS2 is launched in the U.S. and Japan simultaneously. Making the whole announcement rather meaningless in the process. ;)

Last time that I saw Japanase PS3 sales they were very good, I am sure that at the end of the year 10 milions of consoles are going to be sold around the world.

And when I say sold, I say really sold.

By adding the Media Create stuff, it appeared just a week or so ago they were in the 450k range in Japan. Is Media Create that inaccurate? Or did Sony deliver nearly 500K PS3s to Japan in the last 2 weeks? If so, how have they sold to consumers? What is availability like?

Companies continue to announce shipped figures well above sold. Nothing new here..if you get to 700k, maybe even 600k, sold, expect 1 million shipped.

And Sony is all world at it..I think there's about 8 million PSPs that must stull be in transit somewhere.

I'm not sure this is a good new at all.
If i'm right the last data we have for Japan ran from 01/01 to 07/01 if the sells were consistant they were going down (on all systemes), so at this date if sony is right the ps3 wasn't supply limited.

The same for the games, 5 millions games shipped, almost none af them topped the charts in USor japan...

Sony has to launch in Europe asap.

An image speaks a thousend words - but, like a statistic, those can be very different words depending on one's relation to the facts...

A thousand words only for the frame/fraction of time the image was taken. I feel like taking a picture in a store near me with Wii`s accumulated in towers. Oh actually I ll pay a visit to more stores because I ve seen lots of wii`s in many of those. And when I say many I mean....LOTS!

Lets see what THESE images will tell. Definetely not the truth

10million in 1 year? well if sales pick up that might work but not with the sales as they are right now. They sell around 70.000 a week in Japan, thats 840.000 in 1 year. They need to sell 9million in europa and the vs? doubt it. Especially if they stick with the 600euro/dollar price. Unless they get a shitload of AAA titels out this year (wich they wont) they wont hit 10million. X360 finally is picking up steam with lots of good games coming out and the price is alot lower.

The issue is just created by the diction of Sony. Sony's term shipped means shipped from the factories. E.g. MS representatives have repeatedly said that their shipped means shipped from the distribution centers and it would take about 6 weeks until those units would actually have been sold to a consumer.

Using that as a yard stick, giving some extra time for distribution, reducing some time because the units are shipped to Japan, adding two weeks of January sales still unaccounted for, I'd guess the lag between those is somewhere around 8 weeks, maybe less, mayb more. Now, PS3 sales generally hoover around 50.000 units (taking into account the fact that first weeks were a little bit supply limited; Latest Numbers (Jan 1st-7th)).
thus,
50.000*8=400.000
+490.000
=890.000
Not so much off, I'd say...

Hmm, according to vgcharts they all went up, actually! Except ... the PS3, at -4%. :D Right now, Japan is all about Nintendo. I'm looking forward to seeing next week's numbers though. Note that the press release is dated 16 January. It takes a while for the machines to really hit the stores in the sense that people notice they are there. But I certainly don't exclude the possibility that the PS3 will be selling a bit weak in Japan for a while yet, as they seem to be very price sensitive, moreso even than the other regions. But we'll see. Software sales for the PS3s that have actually been sold there really seem to be picking up from the inital sub-1 ratio that we owed to exporters ... ;)

I couldn't agree with that more! I really, really want to buy a PS3 right now, but I'd much prefer to buy a PAL version, just to be sure (though probably a recent firmware released around that time will turn your PS3 into a full PAL equivalent, bar the region protection stuff).

To me, for instance, it says "it's available". There will be others for which it screams "it's not selling".
And others still will cry "it's fake!"

As I said, it's like a statistic - you can interpret in so many different ways, depending on your relation with the facts. For instance, when newspapers published with worry that 75% of americans are over-weight, MacDonalds were saying "Not enough, sir - not enough!".

How the heck could they have shipped 2 million ps3's yet? they just announced, what a week and a half ago that they shipped 1 million units to North america, and we all know they were diverting ps3's from japan to be sold here. Through the holidays. since when did they ship 1 million more units in japan? the sales numbers for that region don't support that....

[oooooohhhhhh, where are you at??? I want one......] would have made sense if the pic of the wii was above me.... anyhow, I have yet to see any PS3's in my area (Fredericksburg). Sony must be selling quite well here.... Does anyone think that a firmware change of the PS3 would allow them to play European BD Movies?

I'm pretty sure it won't. That doesn't work for the PSP either - I tested that some time ago with a US UMD and a US Firmware. I think only recently there is a kind of hack available for homebrew enabled PSPs, but that took years.

PS3's in my area aren't selling quickly any more. Stores like best, buy, and future shop have them in stock. When I ask how fast are they selling they just shake their head and say it's pretty bad, they aren't moving more then one or two a week. I don't think january NPD is going to show any sort of improvement.

Thats what I have seen here too in this part of Florida... but I guess at that price point it only makes sense...
