*Rumors Spin-off* 360 & Blu Ray

The hd-dvd drive was such a huge success that MS wants to do it again?

There's no good reason or need for them to support blu-ray at this time. Maybe in 2012 (or whenever) with the next xbox iteration.

If they can recreate the level of sales at near the same retail prices but at a fraction of the cost, then yes. If the profit margins are fat enough then you don't need wide spread adoption and this is probably why the 360 HDD retail prices are soo high.

Not targeting the low end doesn't mean they are targeting the opposite end of the spectrum. It could be in the middle. It makes no sense to stay with old HDMI anyway. Moving forward, the suppliers will just supply newer chips at a cheaper cost.

They have to justify the R&D, they can't just take a BR drive and plug it in. Not many people are going to be remotely interested in this product. If they charge too big a premium they scare away even the small number that would have been interested. They aren't going to introduce it as a loss leader to compete with their online market.

Given all the old HDMI chips that exist within the userbase anyway, I doubt MS will ignore them just to enhance an experience that only a few will appreciate and add cost to the addon itself.

Plus, if you want to add new HDMI chips why not add it to the the console. At least that way you can provide an enhanced experience to your newer userbase while still servicing your older userbase.

Sure, then the timing of this thing is next year earliest ? or at least the next SKU refresh. Next year's chipset would be better and cheaper.

They have experience with the HD-DVD add-ons. If they can leverage that knowledge R&D shouldn't be a huge cost. Plus, MS has a full time R&D staff, so its more a question of priority versus a question of cost.

Hey speak for yourself. I got my hd -dvd drive from ms for $75 bucks with 10 movies. Then I got another for $25 bucks .

Great portable drives for my laptops !

Also my hd dvds on the add on load faster than the blurays on my ps3. IT was a good device , a shame that hd dvd lost.

I'm a little late to the party & although I do drink the MS Kool-Aid, there's no way I'm buying that Ballmer meant that the 360 is getting a Blu-ray "accessory". It would have made sense _last_ year, but no way this year with their coming Instant On 1080p Streaming. It does not make sense whatsoever. The reason why MS didn't outright deny it is because now people will not quit talking about it & that can lead to existing 360 owners holding out for it instead of buying a PS3. Looks like they may have succeeded. Though if I'm wrong & they do come out with one, then I'll eat my hat. LOL

During an interview yesterday, Steve Ballmer was asked about Blu-Ray and the Xbox 360. I wanted to clear something up. Steve was referring to Blu-Ray accessories for the PC. As we have said in the past, we have no plans to introduce a Blu-Ray drive for the Xbox 360. In fact, the future of home entertainment starts very soon when Xbox 360 becomes the first and only console to offer instant-on 1080p streaming HD movies. With a library of thousands of TV shows and movies to choose from, Xbox 360 owners can instantly watch the movies they want, when they want, in the highest form of high definition.

Well, that makes more sense. As I was writing my last message, I almost went into the fact that a cheap BR add on might prevent me from buying a PS3, but it would only result in me getting BR movies through netflix rather than purchasing the movies I think need to be seen in HD from the marketplace.

So it would end up being a loser for MS, except in terms of PS3 purchase prevention, and honestly, I don't think they need to worry about that at this point. People who want to buy a PS3 to play exclusives are going to anyway, unless as I said, the BR add on for the 360 was a complete loss leader and I don't think the dollars and cents of it make sense! :)

Microsoft would still have to find a way to fix the inherent Hardware problems with the Audio. I think a Add-on at this point would be late and to expensive for them to actually make any difference.

And they would have to take a loss on it, and make sure it was just as fast and compatible as the PS3 since their would be plenty of head 2 head comparison.

I don´t see it happening, PS3 ran away with that one and won the HiDef war.

$70 bucks at newegg means they could easly price it at $100 bucks. Making a 360 arcade + bluray $300.

Thats a 4x drive which would make reads pretty fast.

Maybe not, but.....

we have no plans to introduce a Blu-Ray drive for the Xbox 360.

... the sad fact is that "no plan" means absolutely nothing coming from a representative of any of the console manufacturers, because their plans have changed remarkably fast many times before. Yes I am cynical, but I think have very good reasons for it. :???:

Yeah, we've heard 'np plans' before for devices that have then been released. As for 1080p live streaming, what sort of connection is needed for that? I can't even get GameTrailers' 'HD' movies to stream during the day. In the evening when everyone is online, I can't even stream the low-def movies and have to wait for them to cache most of the clip! The only way I could get 1080p is either downloads or BRDs.

Do you have a source? Patsu's sources seem to say otherwise.

Well, there was this article I noticed a few weeks ago.

I thought it was fairly self evident DVD was on the same track as CD, just perhaps a early part of the curve, or more slowly.

A lot of Blu Ray proponents will post glowing market share increase stats versus DVD, those are just gaining a bigger part of a smaller pie though.

Anyways to Microsoft, with their new more ironclad denials, I have to go back in the camp that doesn't believe this will happen. Their first denial was oddly worded in such a way to almost confirm the rumor. Strange.

If by "HiDef" you are only looking through the window of optical media.

In the context of Sony and MS (there are many other players in the HiDef game) MS got their codec in the ball game and have made a major push into digital distribution through a strong partnership with the biggest digital distribution outlet for HD movies and TV (Netflix) as well as their own thriving marketplace.

I know substantially more people using the Xbox marketplace, Netflix, Hulu, cable on demand services, etc to access HD content than going out buying BluRay players. This generation has seen the definition of media escape the claws of physical distribution formats. They aren't dead yet, but I think it is very, very narrow view to limit "HiDef war" to a physical format when a large segment of High Definition activity is taking place apart from a physical format.
