Rumor: Slim PS3 on the way?

August/September would be earlier than I thought. I'll be happy if it gets released this year.

Yeah this is pretty cool. I owned a PS3 (about to sell though) and really thought it was too big. I might pick up one of these slim's.

I really think we're likely to see it at 299 as well. To justify their high shipment forecast. Probably major cost cutting in the device. A 299 PS3 slim with a 120GB HDD, quite compelling. I think MS will have to react.

Ars guy confirms slim PS3..but says not until August/September.

This guy has a near bulletproof record with rumors so..

I think the date speculation is Ars' own speculation though.

I'm also wondering about whether Japan could get it sooner as it seems they're running out of stock already now. Will be interesting to see what happens. But if true, then yes a pricedrop for the existing SKU seems very likely.

Size hasn't been an issue for me (that's what she said... ZING! :p) It's a pretty standard sized HT component, maybe a little taller (when laying horizontal). I'm more interested in the lower power consumption and noise over my launch unit, which uses almost 200watts playing movies or games and can get pretty noisy in the summer.
I'll probably lose BC, but I rarely touch my PS2 games, and if I want, I'll just buy a PS2 and set it up in another room.

Maybe it's because I'm an AV buff, but my PS3 seems quite small compared to my Receiver. I never really understood size complaints at all though, even with the original Xbox.

Same, the PS3 is less than half the size of my AVR (Pioneer VSX-1018AH-K) which is pretty big.
When I said standard sized HT equipment, I meant DVD/BR players etc. But yeah, the PS3 is definitely smaller than pretty much all receivers and it isn't that big IMO.

It's not really that unreasonable, because receivers are honking huge. I mean, yeah, my PS3 is smaller than my TV, but that doesn't necessarily make it small, either.

Right, but the PS3 is also not so large that it won't fit into nearly every entertainment center on the market.

I'd be surprised of there were an entertainment center that would not house the PS3. On mine, I have the PS3, 360, Wii, Cable Box, Receiver, Router, and Center Channel for Surround Sound. I can't really imagine that folks would have a hard time fitting it into their current entertainment center, it seriously is not that large when you look at the "scope" of things.

That said, I wouldn't mind a slim, and I would move my 60GB into the room and place a slim into the living room, in a heartbeat.

I think the size reduction is more important to Sony, lower shipping cost and components (cooling, etc.). It also spurs sales for people who double dip.

There's a lot of money to be saved with this.

1. Move the power supply (external) and save money on cooling components.
2. Reduce materials needed to manufacture.
3. Increase number of units that can be shipped together.

Those three should help Sony out quite a bit, or at least soften the blow of a soon-to-come price drop.

I hope it gets released before Black Friday...I got my X360 on BF and wouldn't mind adding a slim PS3 to my collection.

Perhaps I'm reading into this too much, or just never saw it before (wouldn't be the first time )
But has anyone else noticed titles have (recently?) started using a new PS3 logo in their promotional material?

It's no longer the full PLAYSTATION 3 spiderman font, but a larger PS3 (however still spiderman font).

Eg, the brink trailer,

(Btw brink looks intriguing Deano :)

Isn't that just a smaller, clearer logo to fit among all the other logos? I wouldn't class this one as evidence :)

Maybe, but it's definitely new, before they always used full Playstation 3 even if that was very impractical in certain contexts (like the above)

Common sense incoming. No slim until next fall at the earliest it's all bullcrap. No pricedrop because it would mean Sony eating another mammoth loss. Sony with the situations the way they are are in no way inclined to take a big loss to boost sales. EXACTLY the opposite to be exact. If the PS3 doesnt sell there still wont be a pricedrop. The ps3 will die.

I'm just wondering if it's the beginnings of an attempt to rebrand the system somewhat. It's always officially been the PLAYSTATION 3, which I can say has never sat well with me.

Steady on. While we appreciate your opinion, sensationalist statements and language isn't going to help convince people. Yes, it's probably quite likely we won't see this Slim model for quite some time and it's probably quite likely we may not see point-of-entry price reductions for some time yet either (I'm not ruling out spec bumps). But we don't know for sure and anyone who does legally cannot comment. It's all speculation.
Statements like 'The ps3 will die' could be seen as simple trolling, and could earn an infraction or warning. I'm not going to though, because I'm in a cheery mood.

:yep2: Yes, having sold over 20 million units at the current high price, favourably comparable to XB and GC last gen, Sony will now just throw in the towel and give up on the platform, leaving a few years of no market presence until next-gen.

The whole point of a slim is to reduce costs to either increase profits or allow a price drop. Saying they won't introduce it in light of the current evidence, instead keeping the same expensive unit with the same expensive price, is a remarkable take on the notion of 'common sense' IMO ;)

Well, clearly, common sense states that since it took Sony x years to introduce the PS2 slim, they'll always take that many years to come out with the slim version of their console. There's clearly a pattern there, that's just common sense.

Just an interesting statistics:

74.34 million PlayStation 1's were sold before the PS1 Slim
73.90 million PlayStation 2's before the PS2 Slim
