Rumor: Slim PS3 on the way?

:yep2: Yes, having sold over 20 million units at the current high price, favourably comparable to XB and GC last gen, Sony will now just throw in the towel and give up on the platform, leaving a few years of no market presence until next-gen.

The whole point of a slim is to reduce costs to either increase profits or allow a price drop. Saying they won't introduce it in light of the current evidence, instead keeping the same expensive unit with the same expensive price, is a remarkable take on the notion of 'common sense' IMO ;)
How is a bit less plastic in a ps3 slim going to significantly reduce costs?. The previous slims are marketing decisions etc.

The above thread has outlined all the pros and cons.

To which I would add that slimming the actual unit should allow for slimming the packaging, as well. Across the whole supply chain even a small reduction in just the depth of the packaging could yield a significant savings in unit storage and transportation costs when multiplied across millions of units.

I think it's fair to say that the PS3 Slim is very real. Firstly, Ars's source is pretty much always on the money, and secondly I trust the news sources of Pat Garratt at VG247, based on my personal experiences of employing and working with the chap.

I also think the PS3 slim is very real, and likely to see the light of day sooner rather than later. Presuming Sony cares to turn the Playstation division into a profitable one and continue to compete in this market, of course.

I'm hoping for a slim PS3 before year's end. I'd like to pick one up again as I still have several games and B-r movies leftover from the last time I had a PS3.

Ooo, good call there, 1up. Bound to happen some day!

It will be interesting to see the timing. I think an announcement at E3 is coming, even if that was not their original intent. The cat is pretty much out of the bag now. It could still be months off, though, and they may not announce a price at this juncture.

Oh poo, I came to B3D to find the "PS3 Slim is a Fake" thread, and say I told you so, but now it's gone :(

Edit: Looked back, guess it's been merged! So...I TOLD YOU SO!

Fake story was fake. :)

Wouldn't a TGS reveal, Japan launch be the most likely event?

Not if Sony learnt anything from the past. And the present - what is the Japanese market now? And if the PSP Go was an intentional leak, they clearly have something bigger up their sleeves.

A simultaneous launch of PSP go and PS3 slim would allow for them to feed off of each other, especially if it also includes increased portability/useability of the combination PSP+PS3.

Like using optical medium to install games to PSP through PS3. Or possibly PSP apps on PS3 blueray games.

I'm buying a PSP Go just because it has Bluetooth.

I kind of have this "dream" that developers will give me the option to plop down my little PSP Go on a stand, and sync up a DS3 via Bluetooth.

...soon, I'll wake up and realize the reality of this, lol.

As for the PS3 slim, I'll stick to my guns and say we won't see or hear anything official about it until after E3. Sony is going to make the Slim PS3 it's own big event. Right now they need to be in the business of spreading out their announcements to keep hype and interest as high as possible during the months leading up to the Holiday Season.

I would think they are going to let the retail channels go dry and do a big re-launch in the fall at $299. This will allow stand alone units to get to $199 with a comfortable margin and use the fall lineup to add to the momentum.

I certainly agree. In fact, I think we could potentially see an announcement of a PS3 slim in July or August, with an actual release date of October / November.

Prior to it's release, I can see Sony doing 2 price drops on the PS3. I wouldn't be surprised to see an intiial $50 price drop after the announcement, followed later by another $50 price drop and the release of the PS3 Slim at the same price point ($299).

This will help clear retail channels, get more people interested in PS3, and also have a positive impact on software sales during the holiday season.

I was actually going ot make a thread on this. I've been noticing the same exact issue on my PS3. I mainly use it for BR playback and it's getting very noisy to the point that I can easily hear it during quiet passages. I was wondering if there's a way to clean it but you're saying that you have to disassemble the whole thing? Are there any instructions to doing this without bricking the unit?

Not sure if disassembling the PS3 is the only way to get it quiet agani, but I did try cleaning with a rather powerful vacuum cleaner... sadly to no avail.

I suspect, it must be pretty dusty in side which is causing it make more noise (heat up more quick) and the only way I know of to get to the fan, is to disassemble it... I'd much rather just buy a slim PS3 though.
