Rings of Red

So you think MS likes paying hundreds of millions of USD for warranty replacements? Of course they are fixing it to their best ability

That may be true since they are not a great hardware company in general. Or maybe they are trying to do it on the cheap until the get a new 65nm batch out.

well, this interview does not change my view that they do have high failure rate. they keep saying 'majority', well it is the percentage that we are interested!
Q: Do you still say that is a normal return rate for the console?
A: We continue to say the vast majority of the people are really happy with it.

Q: I’ve heard varying accounts of what is considered a normal return rate. Some people say that 2 percent is normal. Sometimes 3 percent to 5 percent is considered normal. Back to that question, can you address whether you are within those rates or within a normal rate.
A: We don’t disclose the actual number.

Q: Normal compared to the Xbox?
A: We don’t comment on that.

Q: What explains this anecodotal evidence that it’s out of whack, compared to the Wii or the PlayStation 3 or other consoles.
A: I would go back and say the vast majority of people love their experience.

Q: There were some folks, who are not totally guessing, who said that when you had three million consoles in the market, you have a bone pile of bad ones. That seems to suggest a pretty high defect rate as far as the yield goes. Can you address that?
A: We don’t talk about our production.

Q: If you have a high defect rate, won’t that ruin the business model? Won’t that ruin the profit?
A: I would say we don’t have a high defect rate. The vast majority of people are really excited about their product, and that we are targeting profitability for next year.

Q: Your returns as a category. Is there any No. 1 reason for a return?
A: There are no systematic issues. The vast majority of the people just love the product, have a great experience with it.
:D ...
Q: At this moment, I consider this to be your critical issue for this whole generation. What can you say about that.
A: My job is to make sure the customer is happy...
Yeah thanks , we're all happy now with your logical answers Mr. " the vast majority of the people love the product " ... But I've seen loads of minority on the net ...

The Elite already has some measures in place (epoxy on the X-clamp) that alleviate the problem somewhat. I suppose the latest manufactured Core and Premium have this epoxy too.

Is this a solution that will last/hold, or is it just another time bomb?

I called back today. Told the supervisor I was recording the conversation, which she quickly told me she'd have to "release the call" if I was going to record it.

I told her I'd stopped recording, then discussed it with her. Unlike the last supervisor, this one said they could escalate this further -- so they did. Now it's being escalated to Microsoft, and they're going to contact me within "3 to 5 business days" about how to proceed...

Wow, they sure don't like us recording them... Did you still record it anyways? I dunno about that 3 to 5 business day thing. I am a little too impatient for that. And with you being on your what, 4th box, I would really press them.

They actually called me back later Saturday afternoon, this time I got a MS guy. He was a lot more friendly and informative (it helps when he doesn't speak with a thick accent). He said he got my case and he'd be helping me from a MS perspective, but then he found out the callcenter people screwed up again -- when I escalated it they told me they had to "cancel the repair order". The MS guy says they need the repair order to start....so he called them and got it created again.

He said since it was the weekend he couldn't do much but he'd contact me by Wednesday at the latest on "if" they can give me a new console...

All this almost makes me want to buy an xbox360, just to see the much talked about "Red Ring of Death" phenomenon and if my box would also fail. Odd :???:

There was a case in UK law with another company where a recording was allowed even though the customer didn't inform the company they were recording it, because the company said at the beginning of the call 'this call may be recorded blah-blah.' If they're recording it their end, you're allwoed to record it your end, because both parties know it may be being recorded. This actual case came up in court and sets precedent. The plaintiff presented recorded evidence, the defendent said it was inadmissable because the plaintiff didn't inform the defendent they were being recorded, and the judge ruled that both parties knew it could be being recorded through the company's message.

Dunno if that's applicable to the US, but it's something to consider. The downside is if a person isn't informed they're being recorded, you're illegally bugging phone conversations (here anyway) so it's something you want to be sure on!

If this has been posted already, I'm sorry: http://www.gwn.com/news/story.php/id/13140/Xbox_360_Failures_Explained.html
(Edit: Didn't notice before, but this is mainly just highlighting one of the replies in the previously linked interview with Holmdahl.)

It certainly does seem to be a widespread issue. I now have two friends who have a bricked 360 outside of warranty, and one other who had a warranty replacement. (Yes, I know personal examples are not good measurements, but this is still WAYYYY above any other console issues the same same set has had, and the problem has kept up for a long period of time via online reports.)

I'm surprised there's no class-action lawsuit yet. ...or am I wrong on that regard? ;) Hard to keep up on lawsuits in the US. Hehe...

Is there any course of action my friends can take right now?

One friend already has one. ;) Another is of the "I hate Sony and Nintendo and all things Japanese" variety. (At least, of the last two console generations, since he really didn't have a choice about the previous ones.) The third is completely unpredictable. Seriously. He had an over-the-top anti-Xbox attitude for the longest time, because of hating the Halo delays, and all the other PC-disruption impacts he could think of (the whole pack of us are still PC gamers, primarily), then one day picks up a 360 out of the blue to play Chromehounds.

I think he aspires to be imponderable on purpose.

I just don't understand that. Why buy an unreliable entertainment device with an extended warranty ? Why just not wait for a more reliable version ? Yes with an extended warranty you may "save" some money but is it worth all the trouble and time lost ?

Or they can get about 5 out of warranty repairs on their 360 for less money.
Should I snarkily reply "sounds like they'll need it?" :p ...or point out that it's merely four, for sarcastic effect?

Not that I would remotely PAY to get a replacement unit on something that commonly known to malfunction, as opposed to take my busness elsewhere, or at the VERY least wait until they've recitified the situation. (Which seems to be "not right now.") Considering getting a replacement right now seems to be a crap-shoot (and even when new units come out, it still will take a while to trickle down to replacement units), I'd just as soon sell the parts I can't use on eBay to recoup some of the loss (you seem to be able to get about $70 for them), and wait for a new, repaired model, as well as a price drop.

You can always wait for something better, ie I'm sure the ps4 will be better than the ps3, why not wait for that?

Well I couldn't come close to getting a ps3 for the mere cost of 4 out of warranty repairs here. ;)

Yes their failure rate is probably higher than it should be, but frankly the discussion that it's like 50% is nothing short of ridiculous. Any number near that high would have brought about a new modified unit from MS in short order.

Wouldn't it make more sense to sell a repaired unit for nearer full value than a broken one for $70?

No one is saying it's 50%. But a 5% failure rate is pretty high, and lots of places are reporting above 20% (yes, still anecdotal), so it makes one wonder just where we stand. 20% would be huge.

It would, only people are pretty cagey right now, so there is no "nearer full value" unless you have a friend who's willing to be kind, has never heard of eBay, and you're not going to tell 'em. ;) Used premiums are going for just about half price right now, (and are $160 cash, $200 credit at EB/Gamestop), which is basically no better than "what you'd make selling a broken one" plus "how much it would cost to repair it." It seems the market can do math, too. ;)

I don't think getting them repaired right now is worth the risk, unless you can find someone to do it for less. It's a ~$140 crapshoot while we're in the middle of an indescernable shitstorm right now. I certainly wouldn't repair a 360 while I knew there was ANY chance I wouldn't be getting redesigned gear in it.
