There's something really off the way the game looks, like it's got some cel-shadedness to the characters while the environments try to be realistic, and the baked lighting doesn't look consistent with respect to the characters and the environments, the lack of tone-mapping is obvious.

what I missed most was the lacking of weapons projectiles acting as a light source - big disappointment as that was in quake 2. (jedi knight 2 was also inferior to the first one for that reason :))

Talking about that I do remember sparks in Kingpin (Quake 2 engine based) had lights for each spark generated. Pretty nice considering it's age.

IIIRC Bethesda said they wouldn't use ID Tech 5 engine either as it isn't suited for big dynamic worlds.
Not much is suitable for TES / Fallout / Just Cause type games.

Maybe one of Bethesda's other dev houses will use it.

(Doom3 was a bit too much for the Xbox1, not enough for the 360, and Rage is a bit too late).
Actually Doom3 runs pretty excellent on the old Xbox. They had to tweak some of the maps to make it all fit into the 64MB RAM though. But that 64MB limit was an issue for a lot of games. Still, Doom3 and other games like Riddick, HL2 and Far Cry were completely out of the other consoles' class. NV2A was a beast at 480p.

I think Doom3 engine just lacked the aforementioned support and marketing, and it kinda sucked for outdoor stuff. As Farid said it was almost designed only to do dark, small corridors. Quake 4 and ETQW's outdoor stuff was quite boring and ugly.

It's probably what was shown at last E3 but only for the press.
Is there a release date for Rage? I recall something like September, still kinda far...

Pretty hot for a 60 FPS game trailer. Nicely done in a dramatic sense too.

'Ol Carmy may just best Crysis 2 yet with Doom 4 I guess.

As GAF noted, they redid the voice acting for that sheriff guy and he sounds much better now. A good sign for the games quality.

It does look like a totally mind blowing Fallout 3 including the vehicles that Fallout 3 should have had. Actually while I was playing Fallout 3, I remembered that Beth's open world Terminator games from the '90s had vehicles.

I do hope it's not too much like Borderlands though. Gimme more Red Faction Guerilla + Fallout 3 + STALKER.

In 8x20 feet corridors/sections?

Straight in there with a bitchy comment!! Please don't ruin another thread by stomping around like some crytek endorsed emo.

But seriously, it's looking like ID are back on form, though I can see the vague similarity to borderlands. The clouds are looking very cloudy with some nicely diffused lighting.

I remember pulling an all nighter just to finish Quake II, and every now and then I still load it just to remind myself about how good we've got it now and also why FPS have become the dominant game type. They had better genes than all the others!
