PS4 Pro Speculation (PS4K NEO Kaio-Ken-Kutaragi-Kaz Neo-san)

We are currently researching lower-cost techniques for increasing resolution (such as the geometry rendering described in the original disclosure meetings.)

Does anyone know what technique might be being referred to here?

While I'm waiting for mod I'll re-post the links to the dev and test kits that are publicly listed on the MIC site in Japan (these model numbers are listed in the Neo docs PDF)

Link to certified to Dev Kit Proto 2 at Japans MIC site (note December 2015 date): http://www.tele.soumu.go.jp/giteki/...=413ul&SN=%94%46%8F%D8&LN=2&R1=*****&R2=*****

@scently: I'll try this....

This is just a one random paragraph.
thanks for the leaks, another B3D hero....we kinda love to have that here from time to time. I should mention that I can't find the doc anywhere because I am in a very slow connection -tethering, no data on my phone-, but such a whistleblower leak being real makes it more special

Thanks! I'm no hero though. I was bored (and possibly a little sad..) and just decided to search the MIC site looking for any nugget of info. I googled a term from the dev kit listing I found and came across the Neo PDF.

When I found it it had 57 views. It now has 24K!

Melancholy? Well, any cause is nice to celebrate a leak like this, but I hope you feel better. I am used to melancholy myself, as I am from a very rainy region (my gf calls this Mordor) and feel as if I was irish, or Breton, or English (even with the sucky Brexit) or Scottish...who knows, something in the middle.

Oh, there's a second GPU but that'll only be unlocked in a FW update after Scorpio launches.

That's a shame - I would rather the sauce be secret so we can discuss if it's real or not for several years :(

edit - ah - so now we (or I) know where the October release rumour comes from! I think it will just be so when it does launch games people 'have purchased since October will automatcially work' - which is a good move IMHO...in fact it even states that in early October it's ok to release NEO ready title before the launch...so...yeah, not launching in October.

Just to note the doc does have a serial number in the last few slides, possibly identifying the source.

One interesting slide is the mention of specific resolutions they support in the current sdk, and the repeated mention of checkerboard rendering. Does the SDK do this and as such they seem to be mandating or at least leading developers to certain close to 4k resolutions to be used and then scaled by the system at least with this SDK version.
They certainly like this rendering path and want 4K.

I assume this is the technique they have the patent on.

When do you suspect then, later this year or next?

The October reference is about neo certification, so it could launch running everything in bc mode.
Do they have many 1st party games coming out tail end of the year to show it off, or are they going to have to rely on third party, I do expect the big COD's etc to have neo support though?
Last thing it needs is nothing showing it's worth.

I think it'll be interesting - because it's either late October/early November or late Febuary/early March IMHO - and here's why;

Earlier - so the dust settles before xmas sales and they can take advantage for those sales
Later - they won't even officially reveal before holiday sales due to fear of people not buying PS4 over xmas

Invitations to PS4 announcement conference were sent away 20 days before the event itself. So i'd guess they'll be unveiling it mid september with a launch date between mid octuber - mid novemeber.

The ppt also kind of confirms 2016 release if nothing has changed since then.

Sounds like all games October 216 and on need to be Neo compatible, but it wasn't totally clear to me what the target release date was. Wasn't understanding the roadmap slides. May actually be smart to have a lot of games release for months that support Neo so the library of games for Neo is big when it launches.

Assuming it launches this year, they would want to launch it simultaneously with PSVR (Oct.) otherwise you risk a potential bad PR storm on the internet when new PS4 users who just bought a PS4 to use with PSVR suddenly find out that a much better console went on sale just a month after they bought their PSVR.

Launching in the Spring of 2017 would obviously have a similar effect. However, you can mitigate that if you announce Neo a week or two before PSVR launches so that potential buyers who don't already own a PS4 can weight whether they want the PSVR experience now or to wait a few months for the significantly better Neo.

If Sony want to make as much money as they can, however. Don't launch Neo simultaneously with PSVR and definitely don't announce a launch date for Neo at or before the PSVR goes on sale. And double dip getting people to buy PS4 and then potentially a Neo 1-5 months later. And just rely on your PR and all your Sony fans to cover up any unhappiness from people that feel they got ripped off.

Best outcome? Announce Neo launch date prior to PSVR launch (if it's going on sale within the next, say, 6 months of PSVR) and/or have Neo go on sale simultaneously with PSVR.

It's not exactly a secret anymore that Neo is coming, and it will be an even lesser secret as time goes by. So I wouldn't be too concerned with that; sure there will be screamers, and like every empty barrel rattling they will make a lot of noise, but there's always screamers. You can't avoid it, so why let them dictate your policy? :p

Especially as Neo will undoubtedly be more expensive than PS4 at the time, so it's not certain that someone looking to buy a PS4 would necessarily buy a Neo.

It's a secret until it's officially revealed with a price tag and a release date. Consoles don't really behave like the mobile industry, people aren't expecting a new generation console every 3 years.

When there are questions on Amazon asking if Xbox One slim will play Xbox One games, I can assure you, people (and likely a lot) have no clue what Neo is; because I guarantee the console will not be called Playstation Neo. They're expecting something else. There's no reason for them to know that Orbis is PS4, and that Neo is the next PS.

The point isn't whether everyone know exactly what neo is/will be, but rather that it's coming.

What exactly neo IS will be announced later, and it's Sony's job to explain that.

And yes, it's not a secret that it's coming. Fucksakes, the newspapers here in Sweden have written about it, months ago even. So yeah, people widely know about it.

I know people with consoles and computers that don't even know what E3 is. And they certainly don't frequent tech news sites to keep up on the latest console rumors. People living in the internet tech forum bubble are generally out of touch with your average consumer.

As to more expensive, well yeah, that's to be expected. Hence, why I mention announcing it prior to PSVR if it's going to launch within the next 6-ish months. So that people can decide.

Oh and it's not that odd. Slim models are often announced months before they go on sale. PS4 and XBO were both publicly announced months before they went on sale. It's nothing new and it's the expected thing to do for companies that are interested not only on keeping the public informed but staying in the good graces of said public.

Once something is publicly announced then major news publications, like CNN, can run with it. It can be advertised and promoted on things like talk shows. Things to make the general public that do not frequent tech forums or sites aware of the upcoming product.
