PS4 Pro Speculation (PS4K NEO Kaio-Ken-Kutaragi-Kaz Neo-san)

I'm more keen on believing Sony will offer their own propriety upgrades (underpinnings, housing, etc...), around AMD IPs, and of course being backward/forward capable. Similar to NEO-GEO (which I own), but more refined in implementing these upgrades.

Oh I don't think they will sell a case you can put a video card into. I fully expect it to be a locked box spec wise. I just believe it will be like the thunderbolt card bays for pcs.

Games are already pushing up against the memory bandwidth and cpu limits of PS4

PS4 games on launch were pushing what the memory system and CPU were capable of. Optimisation means doing things smarter so you can do more with the same resources. Games like Uncharted 4 have clearly been optimised to hell and back and the more you use a system and analyse the system the more you can learn to further improve optimisation. There is no statue of limitation of how much optimisation is possible.

The Scorpio on the other hand likely has slightly over 320GB/s memory bandwidth which is a significant leap above Neo's total system memory bandwidth, and it should be able to double the fps in games at 1080p at vanilla console image quality.

Scorpio is aiming to push 4x as many pixels as 1080p PS4 games with approx 2.4x the memory bandwidth. That sounds tight but I assume that AMD are making some gains with better delta compression so you can squeeze more into less. The memory subsystem will be critical here; on PS4 we've seen increasing CPU bandwidth having a disproportional impact on GPU bandwidth.

4K is hugely ambitious. Let's see if they delivery. 360 and PS3 were touted as HD consoles and that was far from achievable.
Now if Scorpio is only $100 more, that is certainly a plus for MS. Would you rather play GTA6, RDR2, Cyberpunk 2077, Elderscrolls VI, Fallout 4, Battlefield [insertname], next Batman Arkham game, next Farcry, next AC, etc at 30fps or 60fps?.
Scorpio wont be available at Neos launch though. Now if your argument is that people wont buy Neo with Scorpio coming in the future, then by that same logic, all Sony has to do is announce specs of a future PS5 (Navi, HBM2) and ruin MS sales
I dont think it works like that. This is a different generation, similar to the smartphone platforms. If i have hundreds of dollars invested in Sonys ecosystem, im not gonna jump ship for better specs alone

Developers are not gonna put in money and resources focusing on Neo or Scorpio when the largest userbase is PS4 and Xbox One, so all the engines will be built for them in mind, PS4 already does 1080p30fps in many multiplat games but somehow you think Neo wont add anything on top of that? Especially given that as time goes on, devs becoming better at coding for this current gen

And all of this is assuming a 500 dollar Scorpio is going to be well recieved because it has great specs. Sony learned their lesson with PS3

So I guess if neo is supposed to be coming out sometime in the next 9 months then we will never see a PS4 slim?...

Possibly not. If speculation born of die-peeping is borne out, then PS4 might not a good candidate for a shrink. Wouldn't rule out a pessy cost-reduced model though, like those final versions of the PS3 and 360 that had the design aesthetic of a recession.

Yeah even a cheaper/quieter model would be nice.

I dunno...you think they will release one along side neo?
Traditionally they've been cheaper to manufacture and sell, so yes. Sony have always been aggressive in cost reducing PlayStations - even the portables.

Wasn't there talk about the PS4 Neo console cases already being manufactured and having their production being ramped up? If so, that's a possible sunk cost if they're going to change the internal specs of the box it likely means they will need to redesign and recreate the cases.

There is talk floating around but there is talk about a Neo being released at end of this year. But given its absence at E3 and House's statement of being surprised of Scorpio's early announcement, I seriously doubt any talking outside of Sony is working on its next iteration of hardware.

Ledbetter over at DF claims several sources have told him it will be out this year

Meristation, a spanish gaming website which said some weeks ago Neo wouldn't be shown this E3, said it will be unveiled at TGE. So, September 27th should be the date.

Also, A. House told some reporter he likes they way Apple announces things, meaning they unveil a product and a month later is already hitting the stores. So it's quite probable Neo will release in November of this year.

I guess that PS4 slim will be also be unveiled the same date with a price cut.

So, November: PS4S 299$. PS4N 399-449 $.

I really don't see how MS is going to counterattack this strategy until Scorpio gets released. And then we'll see, if PS4N has been in production over a year Sony would have also the advantage of knowing exactly how to reduce the cost of their new console, how to improve yields, etc. A year of experience which will probably translate on PS4N being substantially cheaper than Scorpio.

I think the biggest weapon Sony has against Microsoft right now is the pricing of Neo. It will be weaker than Scorpio but if they price it low enough it will sway a lot of potential buyers just on price alone.
Agreed. Neo can do well as long as it isn't being trailed by PS5 shortly after. There needs to be a gap. Neo must run for at least 3 years before pS5 is announced. Or there will be hell.

If Neo becomes successful enough, they can release a new version each year just like iPhone, or a more premium version @ $599.
