definitely wouldn't be if it was kaio ken x10, but its kaio ken x 2
Well, yes :). But even that. How can devs use the power to its fullest?

Also I feel like this needs to be elaborated further, assuming the 36CUs are Polaris cores with 2.5x more efficiency, of course not necessarily reflected in all applications, what sort of ballpark would people put it in? =~ gtx 970?

True but with 2.3x of power under the hood, if you're keeping it 30fps what exactly would you do with it? 4k is gonna be too much, so basically drastically increasing AA, AF, shadow res, particle res, texture res, better LOD and maybe some fancy gpu fluid sim? Are we sure that's enough improvements to feed the kaio ken x 10?

They'll run the game at 1440p and upscale to 4K for output, or use dynamic resolution with full 4K as the max. Asset quality will be unchanged because the memory available is only changed just enough for larger framebuffers. The idea that devs will create custom effects or push for higher framerates is just a pipedream. It's a device for 4K televisions.

Son Goku had a hard time just maintaining Kaio Ken x2...so he said screw it and kept multiplying till he nearly died.

Technically on overall power of new hardware revision it seems like x2 but then adding a 4K Blu Ray drive*, SATA-III* (it's unknown if they're adding this but they have to) aside from overall efficiency than it could seem like a Kaio Ken x10 (placebo effect) when it comes to the playing experience.

You're still using that number wrong. The 2.5x number refers to the performance per watt. If the Neo's cores are Polaris cores than this is what allowed them to put 36CUs in the system instead of 18, upclock the GPU and CPU and still fit within the same power envelope as the original APU in the PS4. Some of the improved power efficiency could be enabled by specifics of the design, but a lot is just down to the new manufacturing process Again assuming the Neo is using Polaris, there may be some additional efficiency to that architecture. That 2.5x number, though, is not a direct measure of it.

my sentiments exactly ... I always thought PS4 Neo is just powerful enough to bring 30 fps games to 60 fps, which sort of correlates with Sony's recent focus on VR

But if ps4 also needs to run the same game and game logic that means no VR title for regular PS4 which is not allowed (as they must hit 60 minimum)

60 reprojected might jump to 120 native if we assume large cpu overhead is available to allow it. That won't help it compete with PC for pretty pixels tho, frame rate is very hard to sell to the mass market.

What it can do for VR seems very up in the air if we assume the same base ps4 game parity limit is in place.

.

E3 will be interesting because I really want to know how they want to sell Neo to the masses ... I would go with 60 fps, but I have little interest in better resolution, AA or shadows, etc.

Despite the lack of PSVR references in the leaked dev documentation I think Sony will sell it on the promise of a better PSVR experience with the fringe, no guarantees, benefits of some PS4 games may also take advantage of the hardware. If anything I think they will undersell Neo.

This will defuse some of the anger that some PS4 owners are currently feeling and give existing PSVR pre-order folks a chance to step out if they are concerned about the potential PSVR experience on base PS4.

I don't think they'll be talking tech - AA, shadows resolutions etc. Their communication needs to be simple and easily graspable by people who only read IGN with includes people who don't understand or care about the underlying tech employed in games.

I'm more interested in the multimedia features of neo.

It will be great if Sony finally catch up to xbox one. Or at least xbox 360.

Man. Xbox 360 with kinect and "play to" support is really really really nice.

Sounds like recipe for failure. I wouldn't buy a product on promise and no guarantees of anything.

Maybe PS4K is needed for remote-help play sessions like Sony showed in their E3 Reveal.

The Case for the PS4K

The point is that generational loyalty up until now is fruitless unless you're specifically doing it for first party franchises, something that has become increasingly irrelevant (poor reception to a majority of new IPs both Sony and MS have tried to wheel out this gen) or getting a bit long in the tooth (can MS really launch Xbox 2 with Halo 7 and command the type of brand power that the franchise used to have?). Ultimately you go where your friends are, or where the games interest you the most. In a cycle that encourages players to slash ties with where they were coming from to a new platform that has everything they're looking for, how do you make sure that customers are tied down to a brand, or at least, have less of a reason to abandon it in favor of the other guys?

The way to do that is to blur the line of product cycles. Perhaps even erase it completely.

All ecosystems are sold on a promise. Manufacturers have no way to guarantee the quality of media provided by third parties.
