Indeed.
It's perplexing to me that MS would be so lax about this situation. Historically they have been very aggressive in the markets they have entered. But lately, it seems they are just happy to share the shelf space (xb360, zune).
$200 core around the same time as Halo3 and GTA4 ... NA is theirs.
Why they are beating around the bush on this subject is a real head-scratcher. They have no hope of competing in Japan, and EU is still pretty much Sony land. So NA is all they have.
Opportunity is only going to knock for so long until it tries your neighbors door.
I definitly agree on the whole with your assesment ChefO.
BUT, to try the other side, Sony hasn't even offficially offered any permanent price cut at all, only a temporary one. However MS looks poised to enact a permanent $50 price cut in days.
The whole question to me is whether Sony has any punch left. You can say MS is playing with fire..but what if there's no fire there? Not saying there is, or isn't.
There is a scenario where MS can keep dawdling on slowly with a focus on profits, and Sony still never catches fire. However, that is just one possible scenario.
You didn't mention the monster software lineup in 2008 that MS will almost definately not be able to match.
MGS, GT5, FF13...those are some heavy hitters right there.
Very true, but MS hasn't shown 2008, and they'll have Alan Wake, Gears of War 2, and other huge titles.
Is FF13 really 08? I have a hard time believing that given the dev time these days..hell I cant believe RE5 is being bandied about for 2010, simply because of how far away that is...
I'd be willing to wager a good amount that Sony will have a ps3 on the shelves for $300 by the end of '08.
I dont see how Sony can just cut prices generally any faster than MS..so if it gets to that kind of firesale I think they can be matched blow for blow. Hell, it is 360 we forget (amidst all this expensive repair fiasco, which should be getting straightened out) that should have the massive cost advantage, having already shipped ~12 million, and having what should be cheaper components all around. And dont forget PS3 has that built in hard drive to contend with, where MS has the core unit.
