PS3 sales numbers

I think somewhere a sony guy recently pretty much said that they don't expect to gain on the competition until a few months into 08, but then they expect things to take off seriously. Could be right, could be wrong in all sorts of different ways. But it's interesting. Probably a combination of having the right titles out, and having completed the most important cost reductions.

Yeah, I remember that comment something about the PS3 will basically be the king of monthly sales by March 08.

MGS4 will barely push 3 million units itself, nevermind 3 million PS3es.
The unit sales of MGS4 is not so relevant because what we talk here as PS3 "sales" is shipments so to speak. Not "production shipments" but still "shipments" to retailers. Do you remember how Microsoft could achieve its 10 million "sales" goal in the earnings before the last one? What I expect is the same thing, just swap Gears of War with MGS4.

Yeah, I remember and it wasn't because of Gears of War. It was because they crammed a bunch of units into the channel and its the reason they only shipped <2 million 360s in the six month ending in june 07.

They were also helped by a certain holiday shopping season.

Sounds like Sony is poised to have serious cost reductions passed onto consumers around the holiday sales period, just in time for MGS4.

tick tock MS ... tick tock

MS had this gen gift-wrapped by Sony and they're pissing it away.

Oh well.

So it sounds like I'll be getting that $300 ps3 in 2008 then. {shrug}

I dont know what Sony is smokin. The only thing I can see getting them to these numbers is $399, which seems unlikely (even then you have to wonder).

I dont see 399 seeing they cant even commit to 499..and it'd probably need to be before Christmas at that.

I've heard Sony has made some wildly innaccurate forecasts before, though.

In other news, Sony quarterly game division loss was ~237 million. Not too bad, really. Of course, since the division contains highly profitable PS2 and PSP, who knows what actual PS3 losses are, probably at least double.

Are you serious?? The 360 sold more in one month (Dec 2006) then the PS3 in its entire lifetime.

Sony is sitting on 3 times as much inventory as it has sold.

They have a big hill to climb regardless of anything else.

There's an article about Sony's intended cost reductions shaving $200 off ps3 price by years end.

There's also Sony's hinting about a Spring 2008 timeframe of turning the tables.

There's also Sony's target of x (11?) million by Spring.

And last, there's existing sales which as you pointed out, have been lackluster.

It all boils down to a significant pricecut(s) prior to next spring and certainly by Christmas 2008.

I'd be willing to wager a good amount that Sony will have a ps3 on the shelves for $300 by the end of '08.

You didn't mention the monster software lineup in 2008 that MS will almost definately not be able to match.

MGS, GT5, FF13...those are some heavy hitters right there.

Yes, and if you allow me some speculation, overshipping of PS3 at the end of FY 2007 can become a usual shipment if they plan a price drop at the beginning of FY 2008. My bet is $50 price cut in April/May 2008.

Indeed.

It's perplexing to me that MS would be so lax about this situation. Historically they have been very aggressive in the markets they have entered. But lately, it seems they are just happy to share the shelf space (xb360, zune).

$200 core around the same time as Halo3 and GTA4 ... NA is theirs.

Why they are beating around the bush on this subject is a real head-scratcher. They have no hope of competing in Japan, and EU is still pretty much Sony land. So NA is all they have.

Opportunity is only going to knock for so long until it tries your neighbors door.

LOL you can't be serious.

I was unaware that the PS3 has only sold 600K as of june or that Sony is sitting on around 13-14 million PS3es.

I definitly agree on the whole with your assesment ChefO.

BUT, to try the other side, Sony hasn't even offficially offered any permanent price cut at all, only a temporary one. However MS looks poised to enact a permanent $50 price cut in days.

The whole question to me is whether Sony has any punch left. You can say MS is playing with fire..but what if there's no fire there? Not saying there is, or isn't.

There is a scenario where MS can keep dawdling on slowly with a focus on profits, and Sony still never catches fire. However, that is just one possible scenario.

Very true, but MS hasn't shown 2008, and they'll have Alan Wake, Gears of War 2, and other huge titles.

Is FF13 really 08? I have a hard time believing that given the dev time these days..hell I cant believe RE5 is being bandied about for 2010, simply because of how far away that is...

I dont see how Sony can just cut prices generally any faster than MS..so if it gets to that kind of firesale I think they can be matched blow for blow. Hell, it is 360 we forget (amidst all this expensive repair fiasco, which should be getting straightened out) that should have the massive cost advantage, having already shipped ~12 million, and having what should be cheaper components all around. And dont forget PS3 has that built in hard drive to contend with, where MS has the core unit.

Im agreeable with that speculation as it seems it becoming a common tactic with Sony and MS.

Maybe MS will try to hold off Sony with SC5, Halo Wars and maybe some other titles they will try to push in 2008. MS has a multitude of titles for 07 while Sony has them in 08. I guess will we spend next year talking about what 2009 titles will push either one over the top.
