[PS3] Modnation Racers

Sorry, no formal defiinition of "mad". I think the devs would know. IMHO, it's not good enough if the track editor is flexible, versatile, complete, etc.

It needs to be "Huh ?". :)

I already have MotorStorm as a mature standin for Mario Kart (I know, no weapons... but the off-road tracks and aggressive AI grab my attention). ModNation Racer needs to be more different or addictive if it wants to stand out.

You mad.

I also think that they don't have to follow Mario Kart's formula. MK has very well-known Nintendo characters to help drive it.

Probably the biggest thing holding it back. The characters and themes look bland without that cartoon touch.

Or maybe it's just a less appealing cartoon style. First time I saw them, they reminded very strongly of the various 'bad guy' characters in the Powerpuff Girls to the point where I thought they copied them.

I don't know man, I met someone who talked fondly about Mario Kart and Yoshi (Her favorite character). She was a non-gamer today, but was quite eager to get her children to play it. They eventually bought a Wii. I think the characters from various franchises can attract certain segment of people, especially those who abandoned gaming long ago.

For core gamers, they'd play the game as long as it's good.

More details available. Good to see the developers working on their own vision.

The game features both split-screen and twelve-player online racing as well as a story mode written by professional Hollywood writers.
What makes this game unique is its character, track and kart customization. Customization looks simple, but is very in-depth. Character customization includes the ability to change the color of any asset, see full animation whilst creating the character, and truly even make a character that’ll look just like you.

...

Track customization is easy as well; United Front created the editor so that truly anybody can use it without confusion. Once a track is created, it can be uploaded online for friends to download, who can then remix your track and reupload it for even more creativity sharing. If you forget where you are when creating the track, you can use an autocomplete feature that will automatically finish the track for you; an autocomplete is also available for area population that automatically throws trees and other items down on the course. There’s also weapons, ramps and more to add to the track. Weather options are also available.

I am not so much into character customization. The auto-complete and auto-populate track editor is more of my type. I wonder what the editor has to offer for LBP creators like Jaeyden.

I saw the GAF Modnation thread. Some of them showed off rather compelling avatars. I kinda like the character customization feature now that I see what's possible.

Now let's hope the racing is fun. Too many complains about framerate in the beta.

just watched a few videos...call me interested: track construction is a great idea! Unfortunately I don't have access to the beta , but I wonder when people start to re-build real tracks, for instance formula one tracks!
Cool!

Managed to try around 30mins of the beta.

The track editor is really intuitive - altho I have to say I think I broke it somehow...the start of my track has a 'top down like micro machines' view then after a bit the camera swoops down behind the player. I love the 'auto poulate' feature and have no issues with people making real tracks or places.

My major gripe is the frame-rate, it's not even like it's stunning to look at - altho the photo mode is nice.

Overall there's potential here, need longer to play.

The track they show is madly complex (^_^), and has triggers for additional mechanics. This is what I was talking about. This means that they can evolve the game into something richer -- rather than just cosmetic changes -- with more triggers (YES !!)

I am officially interested in this game ! In fact, with the auto-completion feature, I think my son may be able to create a simple level in this game.
Fix the framerate people complain about please !

EDIT: I think we may also need some direct player-to-player interaction tools (e.g., weapons, towing, relay, grouping/picking partners, etc.).

That looks pretty promising. Lots of scope for crazier levels. Framerate I guess will always be hard to manage on a user-created game, as you have much less control over placement of resources. then engine will have to make sacrifices somewhere. A racer really needs a solid 30fps at least, so I hope they can find places to optimise and pull this off. It'd be a tragic shame to ruin a game with as much potential as this due to a single, high-impact failing.
