[PS3] Metal Gear Solid 4 *spoilers*

That sounds just about right for a MGS game.
I think it is between 4 and 5 mil that the series usually sells [talk about a loyal fanbase] :) In MGS4's case it is even better considering the relatively small userbase.

Yes, the first Middle Eastern stage is in the demo.

Also, those are good sales, but I hope it will continue selling up to about 7 million in a years time.

^^ Your logic amazes me.

1. Why wouldn't konami want more money?

2. What makes you think Hideo Kojima has something against a port? What makes you think he has any say in that decision?

Its not like previous MGS games haven't been ported before..

Haha...good one. That shit has to keep coming up even when the game is out for all these months? Konami made a fuckton of money already and there's no way that Kojima will give his blessing for an Xbox port. Needless to say if they did it without his permission or involvement, fans will start an outrage, that is including me. No more MGS shall be made without Kojima's incentive.

Is there a basis for your belief that Kojima would not want it on other platforms? As far as I know, the game is not 1st-party funded or subsidized.

1. Simple. You wage the potential of a fuckton of loyal fans abandoning the entire franchise and its creator by trying to make an extra quick buck on the Xbox. Kojima has gone on record saying that MGS4 has ties to PS3 too much to ever be ported, beside the obvious technical reasons mumbo jumbo. It's not worth anyone's time and I am positive Kojima has also gone on record to say he is going to be involved in the next Metal Gear game. Do you know why The Twin Snakes exists? Because Kojima sanctioned it. Without his permission, the game likely wouldn't have been created or would have been a flop.

2. Read some of his interviews. Other than that, see above.

Correction: MGS1 was ported to the PC, MGS2 to the PC and Xbox, and MGS3 is only on the PS2. In my opinion, Konami have tried the water with those ports and after MGS2 decided it's not worth going through that much effort to reek in little money when they could use the resources for new games.

Of course I'm biased, I'm the biggest MGS fanboy you will find on these forums. But still, MGS4 to PS3 is what MGS1 is to PS1. Did you play the game?

Other than that, neither you or me know how much Sony paid or what deals are active. You simply assume there aren't any, fine, I will assume there are some. Besides the FACT that Sony has done most of the marketing for the game themselves of course.

lol at the blessings and outrage. How are you going to outrage? not buy another MGS game regardless? stand infront of me and say "NO!" when I goto buy a copy for the 360? Spam the net with console wars?

Discussing the business aspects of a port lead to interesting perspective. Keep garbage like "blessings/outrage" to other forums please.

I think the issue of whether MGS4 will ever appear on the 360 is a topic for a new thread.

I've played MGS4 through at least five times now and it's still suprised me each time. It truly is a remarkable game for this generation.

Okay I finally got the demo working (had to download it 3 times).

I was going to buy this originally, but Eurogamer's review and learning more about the series put me off. The demo does seem to somewhat vindicate my choice.

Firstly, the graphics... I was expecting better, from all the hype.
From what i've seen in the demo, why do people think this can't be done on a 360? Fitting the cutscenes/levels on DVD would be the only problem I could imagine.

It is a very Japanese game visually, in that the character models are excellently detailed to the point they show up the environments, which have rather low res textures. It looks like a less consistent COD4, and the temporal AA introduces distracting artifacts unfortunately.

The gameplay (and the controls) are quite complicated and have a lot of depth, but the not quite believable AI and the sneaking gameplay seems sort of contrived and not entirely realistic. The shooting unfortunately isn't really up to scratch either, it doesn't have the 'feedback' of top tier shooters.

This partial adherence to realism is what really turns me off. When you have a game that is nearly an interactive movie, it had better be a good movie.
While the premise of a global economy fuelled by war is definitely interesting, the games frequent insertions of the bizarre (ie. when the walking handycam starts dancing, or Liquid Snake's amputated arm somehow takes over Ocelot) destroy the suspension of disbelief, and pull you out of a world that is otherwise well crafted. As I am not a big fan of manga/anime or even the generic action blockbuster movies, you can understand why the game is not my cup of tea.

Barring maybe size issues, I don't think anyone on B3D seriously thinks it can't be done on 360. Can't speak for other boards where I know the opinion holds.

Its called post-modernism. Secondly some things that seem to be supernatural you discover they arent necessarily supernatural when you progress in the game but have logical explanation. But I wouldnt like to spoil it for you in case you decide to rent it.

This series lends I believe a lot from work such as George Orwell's and is inspired by today's events including the power of propaganda, psychology of the masses, globalization, para-states and para-governments, etc.

MGS4 isnt considered great as one game. Playing one game from the series wont do justice. There is a reason why some gaming media say that MGS4 came after 15 years in the making. Usually when you play one game whether it is a sequel or the first it can be judged as a separate game. The MGS games regardless of the number next to each episode, are all chapters of one single vision. Playing MGS4 only is like reading the final chapters of Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. It wont make you like it as much as it should. They are considered 3 books but it is actually one story chopped to 3 parts. This is similar with MGS4. If I didnt play the previous games I might have not liked it. But MGS4 is like a progress of the MGS game I bought years ago. Finally I could play further into that game.

IMHO, MGS4 is still one of the greatest achievements this generation. What it may lack in graphics (though I disagree personally), it makes up for it in game-mechanics. It might not be the ultra most realistic game out there - perhaps, as an interactive movie it even disappoints - but on the other hand, I think it's one of its strongest points: A game that didn't forget it's a game and is most importantly, fun and challenging to play.

Most of the challenge comes when engaging in the cat & mouse game with the enemy soldiers. Sure, you can trick them easily once you figured out how they work, but you have to get there first and the way to get there is some good fun. The AI is also quite complex once you start playing on the higher difficulty settings.

While I don't think Act 1 is the best part of the game (and I take it, the demo are parts of Act 1), Act 2 and further is very it really starts. Also, have to give credit to Team Kojima for making MGS4 as varied as it is. Espionage action, stealth play, action, escape on vehicles, beat'm up showdown, boss fights, varied landscapes and levels, many different enemy types with varying AI (metal gears, soldiers)...

I think your point is crucial. Gamers like myself, with no nostalgia of the series won't see the game in the same light as the devoted MGS fans.

And apparently the story had gotten quite convulted over the years (they hired Ryan Paxton to gather the loose threads), and appears to be not even internally consistent (unlike LOTR).
eg. I remember someone posting about how Vamp turned out to be a cyborg (retcon?), like Raiden, however this removes the explanation for his water walking ability (ie vampirism).

But I do appreciate the legacy and impact of the series. (I used to play emulate the Gameboy spinoff emulated on my Palm, was one of the best Gameboy games IMO).

However, I was mainly thinking of getting MGS4 as a visual tour de force for my PS3, and I already have too many time intensive games (ie Oblivion, Far Cry 2, GTA4 etc) and nowhere near enough time these days.

He can't walk on water. He can RUN on water. Like Sonic. I think, in fact, that there's a mission where you face Vamp in MGS2 and he jumps in and out of the water like a salmon. And I don't think Ryan Payton gathered the loose threads so much as helped bring western design concepts to Japan. Like the over-the-shoulder camera and shooting controls that aren't completely, absolutely horrible.

MGS4 is a "once in a lifetime" end to a story and series that has innovated and changed people's perceptions withevery game released.........sometimes you just need the past to enjoy the present, like fruits of a long drawn Freedom struggle cannot be understood by a child born after the struggle. Somehow the MGS series trancends the medium of controllers and TV and lands inside your life and mind.

@vanquish:

Go play MGS2 and MGS3 atleast, they are still better than majority of the games available right now. I played MGS3 2 years back(and fell in love!), and MGS2 in Feb and MGS4 in July on release. Although I could not catch the nostalgia of visiting Shadow Moses as I have not played MGS1 in my childhood, but the love had built up for the characters(The only series which makes me care) and especially for Solid Snake, Naked Snake, Eva and Raiden for me to fully get immersed in the saga of a Hero whose body is falling apart while the world still needs him(though the world doesn't know).
MGS2 and MGS3 will pretty much change ur mindset about games ! It broke the illusion for me about whether games can only do this much. MGS4 might not have that many quirks and innovation to it, but that is because it was an end to a series not a new chapter in it and I think, they dumbed down the mechanics a bit to make it more approachable to new comers , a very debatable decision as most of the game is a fan-service.

(they hired Ryan Paxton to gather the loose threads)

Ryan Payton was an assistant producer for the 'localisation' of the game. He has nothing whatsoever to do with the story/script which is written mainly by Hideo Kojima and co-written by Shuyo Murata.

Anyway, i say go for it, even without playing the previous entries, 'cose it's a brilliant game.
