Trailer is one of the best vg trailers I have seen. Best possibly, if not best, definitely top 2.

I'm also glad to hear the way they are expanding combat.
At this point, I hope they don't abandon David Jaffe school of thought as his casual approach to hardcore gaming is very welcome.

So you found it jaw dropping impressive because the texturing, particle effects and lighting is average? Animation is smooth so what? In this day and age do you expect choppy animatiion? I can name a couple games in the same genre that are more impressive but I'll save that for another forum.
Let's just put it this way, you're the only one who wasn't impressed with the trailer. I really wonder why people question other people's opinions. If you didn't find it impressive, fine, but don't question other people's opinions.

It's my belief that people should explain why they think such and such is great or not so great. If you don't explain why you think it's such and such then your opinion means absolutely nothing.

From what little I gather, people seem impressed by the macro elements in GoW III. e.g., The epic scale, the level with its own AI, Kratos' brutal fighting style, ...

I don't think they are looking at textures, lighting, framerate, etc. because it is too early. Kratos' character model is rather intricate though (20,000 according to one of the interviews posted).

"Welllll... if I remember the presentation correctly, it was done all in-engine, with real game assets, but that this particular trailer was pieced together in Adobe Premiere. Not trying to take anything away from God of War III, because the gameplay looked just as spectacular and we're wading into stupid fanboy war territory, a sissy fight of nitpickery.".

So the trailer being 30 or 60 fps won´t tell us the fps of the game. I doubt it will be 60 ( and above all more now that people are even comparing graphics to those in DMC 4 and they will try to go with the maximun graphic effects route ).
IMO What will sure be out of the question is being 1024p. It will be 720p for sure, and one more thing: it will be a spectacle.

I'm not that impressed by the details either - the general look is reminescent of games like Golden Axe or the new Wolfenstein, ie. a pretty basic level of shading and lighting, seemingly complete lack of postprocessing and so on. In short, it feels a few years behind of the technology curve.
It's also very mixed artisticaly, as if the team does not yet have a grip of the new technologies (I also find those huge gauntlets kinda ridiculous).

The scale revealed in the trailer, and the animation are cool though. But as much as they add to the gameplay, they won't make the game a pleasent sight either. It may very well be better to put the emphasis on gameplay, but without the looks they just won't really sell beyond their loyal fanbase.

What are you referring to? The newer screenshots or the trailer? The trailer is several months old, which is what you seem to be referring to.

Are you joking or are you trying to get a rise out of people? How can you possibly make such a claim? I assume you've done the research to determine what will and won't sell, right? Or are you simply postulating your own B3D opinion to the general population? I'm not even saying it will sell, that's not even the point. God of War isn't nearly as big as Halo or Gran Turismo -- it's also the fourth game in the series, obviously it'll sell mainly to its existing fanbase. It's about you making claims that I'm sure you can't back up with a single iota of facts.

Let's just not confuse things, OK?

First, the screenshots. These are the ones that just don't look that good to me:

Lacking both a lot of technical features and artistic polish (so, this may change until the release).
I mean, just compare it to Heavenly Sword, same platform, similar budget, and it's two years old. And GOW3 doesn't look any bit better than that game, I'd actually say it's even worse.

Second, what i'm saying about the sales part is the following:

It's a very good intention to put gameplay in front of graphics.

But today's market is so competitive that if a game is too far behind in graphics then it will fail to get the attention of the general public.

Thus the decision to concentrate resources on gameplay may end up creating a very good GOW3 that suffers in sales because of it.

This is in no way meant to attack the game, I'm merely pointing out the irony of today's game market, at least on the HD consoles.
(And let's not get into the Wii here, a GOW-type game is probably way beyond that audience anyway)

The section involving the ride on the cyclops and shifting landscape was impressive, yes. By all means, feel free to name games in the same genre with the macro-scale, creature modelling and animation present in the latter half of this trailer. (but do be aware, that I've almost certainly played and examined whatever title you might mention)

I'd also like to say that we didnt play Heavenly Sword in screenshots, we played it at 25 fps with screen tear. In motion, GOW III looks much better than that HS' choppy animations and generally shoddy refresh rate. HS has superior lighting, shaders and environment detail, and that does translate to a more impressive IQ in stills. In motion however, it looks inferior when compared to the latest GOW III footage.

I'm a big fan of the GOW series, but the trailer while pretty epic in scope and very smooth in animation does not indicate how the game will play. As stated, it is using in-game assets, that doesn't mean that this is how the game will actually play.

I'll at least wait for the direct feed gameplay vids before saying it is better or worse than other games.

I'm hoping this game will be just as good or better than the previous GOW games.

To give a better quote on this:

A couple things I want to qualify before we look at it. First of all, it's all 100% real. There's no post done on this. The engine spits out raw frames. We put those frames into Adobe Premier... Everything that we're seeing here is using actual in-game resolution, textures, and effects. It's scripted out in a cinematic way, because there's a story that I wanted to tell, that, if we were to play the game, we couldn't tell in two and a half minutes. We couldn't play the game exactly the way this runs out. But, let me assure you, we can drop Kratos into these levels, and we can do all this stuff that's happening here right now.

I agree that the game so far looks artistically boring, but then again the first two didn't do much for me either. But this is Sony's flagship title, their mascot. I think in the end it will technically be impresive. I don't see them allowing anything less.
Although if they are going for huge scale, some detail may have to be sacrificed. In which case it will still likely be very impressive, but just not in the "let's take a look at one close up screenshot and scrutinize every detail out of context" way that most gamers seem to attack a games looks nowadays.

You would write the exactly same description for Killzone 2 screenshots comparing it with Haze, wouldn't you? ;)

Probably what make KZ2/GOW3/Uncharted stand out as real next-gen games are dynamic lighting and believable animation. They add to player immersion much more than richer background textures. If GOW3 is 60fps, it's more difficult to convey these points with still screenshots.
