The original Metal Gear Solid on PSX, for one. Going up the elevator, there is a reason it takes so long. It's not because it's a long trip, lol, it's because they're using that segment to deliver some dialog, and at the same time, load up the next area.

There are instances like these in many gamers, where the character is put into a situation where there is little going on, story / cutscene begins, and the game loads up the next area accordingly. Future MGS titles, God of War, and I think there are some areas in DMC titles that do the same. I'm sure there are plenty of examples outside of these few games that also use these methods.

The infamous Mass Effect elevator rides.

That was a waste of a perfectly good explanation, I know perfectly well what the advantages of realime cutscenes are ;)

Yeah that part was more in response to Shifty who was asking why bother :)

But you say there are games that load in the background of a fully realised (a.k.a not simple conversations) realtime cutscene, so which games are those ?

Many games as mentioned have 'elevator rides' to mask loading. In the MLB 2K game of yesteryear, we would display a realtime cutscene during loading that showed a slice of the outside of the stadium, parts of the inside, people walking around, etc, while the main assets and main stadium were loading. The views during that loading would vary every time you played, as well as the look of people, time of day, etc...

Even San Andreas did this, it cut the percieved loading time when entering a shop by showing a short animation while entering, maybe it was only 2 seconds but it was still 2 seconds without a load screen :)

IN other forum and I think many in fact are using emulator and playing GOW2 on PC @1080P resolution and smoothly too. It still looks great for a PS2 game but GOW3 is much more than that. Sony gave some details it has more than 4 times and something like that. But it is a brand new engine for a brand new system. People should use little bit of common sense :devilish:

According to Psxextreme.com Sony other devs like Naughty dogs and Isomniac also gave some tips to them. In GDC, I read somewhere that GOW3, KZ2 and Uncharted2 devs will talk about PS3 and their respective games.

Let us wait and see. I am sure GOW3 will be a kick-ass. I can wait for Q1 2010 :p

The PS2 emulators barely work at the native reso.

Let alone 1080P. I doubt someone is playing it at 1080P.

I really can't wait for GOW3, I've loved all the games they are so much fun and its hard to put them down at times.

Yeah, people were raving about GoW I and II graphics.

There are more than one way to impress though. Given their envelope-pushing track records, the Sony folks will likely establish a unique visual statement for GoW III too.

I am not a fan of Kratos myself, but they'll get there. The MotorStorm folks showed subpar visuals initially (Remember Phil told Evolution that they were the weakest :)). Then they improved leaps and bounds during the last few weeks/months.

Factor 5 (Lair) went the opposite way, but since the GoW III trailer is already demoable in-engine. The Santa Monica studio should not fall into the same over-hype trap.

[strike]Some disgustingly noisy signals in this thread.[/strike]

Thread pruned so that hopefully the actual game is discussed instead of having a degenerate argument based on exaggerations.

I really don't think they need to greatly improve God of War 3. The character model alone for Kratos is pretty impressive, with muscles and tendons that expand and contract. That's far more impressive to me than a hunking piece of normal mapped armor.

I think visual accomplishments extend far beyond lighting and particle effects or complex shaders. Animation, scale, set pieces, and stability are all far more important to me than any of the above.

Honestly, what good is realistic lighting in a game that clearly is disjointed from any form of realism? It serves no purpose, IMO. I'd rather see that horse power applied to really great character models or scale, with a stable frame rate.

I didn't play any GoW at all, it's impossible for me to comment on the specifics. In general, the devs will aim to differentiate their games (from predecessors and competition). I think it's safe to assume visual will be improved, gameplay will be upstaged.

Personally, I do agree that an "organic" Kratos (with realistic muscle movements) would be more interesting than one clad in armor.

Perhaps, but the devs will probably have more on their mind (beyond these common graphics indicators).

The demo showed some possible direction in scale, gameplay and camera. Just give them more time to cook. The visuals are important to communicate the game's "unknown" quality to a new comer (like me !).

God of War for newbies :)

It's the same trailer, but the developers annotated it with more background info (e.g., specs, target, new gameplay move, back story, etc)

I haven't seen the insert over the very end with Zeus looking down at the Titan as it climbs. That much seems new.

Yes indeed. The movie clarified the gameplay of GoW III for me (e.g., the bit about Centaur commanders making the horder smarter and fiercer). Without the explanations, it just looks like some random collage.

I look this game looks unbelievable. We all know it's gonna be fun as hell too. If it surpasses part 2 the same way 2 surpassed part 1 in gameplay it'll be the greatest action game of all time IMO.

(Leaked) GDC 2009 God of War III gameplay segment:

It's under development. Adjust your expectation accordingly.

I'm impressed, I like it. If the framerate is good and lots of action on screen, it's all I think one could want from a God of War game.

Hmm, looks good. It almost gives me an old school gaming vibe, like a pretty Aliens (Amiga) or Gauntlet.

Hmm, well the dynamic lights are cool. You can't really tell anything else from youtube footage though. (except that the gameplay is still brutal).

Pretty cool lighting, though enemies could use selfshadowing. Also wish the ground isn't just made of flat concrete, give it a bit variation like dents or some obstacles.
