PS3 Firmware 1.80 - PS/PS2/DVD upscaling, DLNA and more!

Its great but my linksys WRT54G (not the linux version) doesn't want to play nice when the option "media server" under network connections is enabled.

It seems that every time I enable this option on the PS3 my router seems to restart after a couple of seconds. Doing this in an endles loop. Bringing of course my whole network down.

Disable the option "media server" en al is fine  So I cant use the streaming possibilities for now :(

Here is another comparison, although not done with PS3, I used ffdshow to mimic the same effects to show what exactly is going on

left side is without full range, right side is with full range

Here are the settings

Using ffdshow, I found that the upper and lower limits of a video file should be
16~234
modifying the input to 16~234 and leaving the output at 0~255 seems to solve the problem :D

Yeah, as I mentioned in the other thread, my TV seems to support the wider color spectrum as well (not that big a surprise, as it advertised this ;) ), looks great. The TV has a dynamic mode which tries to keep the PAL color space as much in the best parts of the range as possible, but that sometimes leads to visible dimming/brightening. With this new FW 1.8 option on, this almost never happens and you get the full spectrum by default. It's awesome.

I also tested the scaling of DVD games, yesterday looked at Unleashed (of which my gf wanted to watch a scene) and the improvement is very, very clear. Also the PS2 game scaling I'm happy about too - the full-screen option with smoothing helps GT4 out a lot (as we PAL people don't have any native progressive modes in that game in the first place).

Dlna

My PS3 recognises and finds my Nero Mediahome server but it doesn't show the folders I've shared. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

Also tried with WMP11 in Vista and the PS3 can find the server but can't connect for some reason.

Starting to get frustrated grrrr.

Upgrade your firmware. WRT54G UPnP is buggy, and certain UPnP operations cause a reset. On my WRT54G, opening up "Internet Gateway" icon under network neighborhood and assigning UPnP port forwarding would cause it to reset.

Unfortunately the newest firmware is already installed. It seem on other forums that people are also witnessing the same behaviour.

Well if you don't mind the risk of bricking your router you can make it a Linux version by installing DD-WRT firmware. Even if it's one of the newer versions with gimped flash/RAM there is a Micro version of DD-WRT for it.

Stuff won't show up until nero has indexed them. If you added certain folders to be shared, and they haven't been indexed yet by nero scout, they won't show up on your PS3. So this might be a possible explanation..

It took a fair while for Nero to scout my whole PC, but I think it's pretty much done now, and everything shows up on my PS3.

Glad to see Twonky responding so quickly. One thing I'd like to see them, and others do would be to get Video and Audio casts from the internet working. That'd be nice.

I'm having problems too. I upgraded to the latest Nero and opened ports, etc. on my firewall. I can see my shared folders and files. I can even play them a bit but they're very stuttery which I assume is owing to a slow wifi connection to my Zonet ZSR2104WE router on the PS3 side.

So I've tried to copy the files first but invariable the service is lost at 200 or 600 or so MB. Frustrating.

New router? Run CAT5 to the basement?

You did give the PS3 (Unknown Device) access ('Allow') to the library in WMP11 though, right?

Works faultlessly for me. The only thing that had me for a moment is that you have to match up the XMB menus. The Windows Media Player server is available under Pictures, Music, and Videos. If you start it from Music, it won't find pictures in the folders and vice versa, even if you get to see those folders at that location through the server interface.

I'm guessing some people on here have experience in setting all this "media server" stuff up, anyone care to do a little step by step guide for the uninitiated like me?

I use a wireless connection for my PS3 route (Linksys WRT55AG-UK if it matters) I have a little experience with the route so could probably open the required ports at a push if needed.

I'd also need to set it up to access two PCs, but I'm guessing that won't require any additional work apart from scanning both machines for media.

Unfortunately they noted this to be impossible due to the PS3's current implementation. It needs the length of the content prior to download; something like that. It's detailed in the forum link @ my prior post.

At least from DNLA. But they could implement RSS feeds, at least they have that working on the PSP for Audio, though not video (download only)

I strongly recommend this -- DD-WRT is amazingly stable.

Turns out my computer isn't fast enough to transcode...

Athlon 64 3200+, tried setting MPEG2 and MPEG4 and none of 'em worked. Got a "data is corrupted" or "access denied" when I tried to stream a DivX video, watching the server status I can see it's because it takes too long to transcode.

That makes the video streaming pretty useless to me -- they'll need to add DivX decoding...but what're the chances of that? Pretty much none, not with Sony Pictures under the same roof as SCE...

Son of a.... The computer I was considering to act as my media server has that same chip. Maybe there are other factors as well. If you don't mind me asking, could you list the other specs of your PC? Memory type/speed, hard drive specs and configuration, and the OS version would be the most relevent, I think. Also, how are you networking the two?

That's not a x2 Athlon is it? My x2 3800 is OK for SD transcoding at least, from what I've tested sofar.

As for native DivX support, who knows. I'm not sure how much influence Sony Pictures holds at SCE though. We've had lots of examples of people doubting Sony would do this or that or the other with PS3 because of various claimed internal and external influences, and they subsequently turned out to do them. That said, I do think such support is unlikely..it hasn't come to PSP for example, and I'm not sure there's any technical reason why it couldn't, so that probably indicates the chances are low.

Cheers, Titanio! That might be it. Will check when I get home!

Athlon 64 3200+ (Socket 754, 1MB L2 cache, 2.0GHz)
2GB of DDR400 RAM
2 x Seagate Barracuda 160GB 7200.7 drives in SATA RAID 0
Windows Vista Ultimate (32-bit)
The PS3 and PC are connected to a router (Linksys WRT54GL w/ DD-WRT), using LAN (100Mbit).

If I turn off transcoding, it works great (streamed .mp4 files).

Thanks for sharing. I have nothing in my box that would give it a leg up over what you have there. Expect for maybe Vista. Nero might work better with XP (might not, too). Guess I'll have to use another computer, or upgrade this one. I'll give it a try and see what happens.
