PS3 Controller Rumor (Updated)

SPONG - More Internet chat lighting up the wires overnight, this time revolving around the PlayStation 3 controller and the general belief that it is ‘a bit sh!t.’ According to reports surfacing in the past 24 hours, Sony could well have a surprise up its sleeve, planning a redesign of the loathed interface to emerge in the coming months.

Rumour has it right now that Sony is just a few months away from showing the final design for its controller, with the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas scheduled for 5th - 8th January 2006.
Curious as to where this rumor was generated. I'm sure it wasn't one of LB's rumors, his would be more along the line of 'PS3 remotes bring down passenger jets'. Honestly, I can't see Sony doing a lot of rework other than the physical appearance; maybe returning to the old PS2 design.

I would love to see a redesign that improves aiming on fps games, but I'm not sure how that could be done. The mouse/keyboard combo is just to ideal.

Anyway minor rumor during a period where Sony sits idly by awaiting the X360 launch. I can't believe Sony is going to sit back and just let the launch gain full steam without some sort of diversionary hype, but with only 5 days to go that seems to be the case.

Am I the only one that likes the controller design? Anyway I hope if the current controller *is* comfortable that they don't make it less so based on the feedback given to a controller no one has ever held.

I like it better than their previous controllers which hurt my hands after a few hours of gameplay. I've used a similarly shaped gamepad on the PC before and found it quite comfortable, even after extended playing.

Maybe, just maybe they don't have jack squat to say. But I'm sure if Sony had some positive news, they wouldn't hesitate to announce it. They pissed all over MS E3 parade with no problem and you would think that the launch would elicit the same response. Methinks that Sony realized that it's time to put up or shut up and they decided to shut up until they actually have something to show other than an empty shell and some movies of how PS3 games are supposed to look.

I like that policy. Kinda inconsistent though.

The trick is to let other people hype for you. If Sony launches a big attack on MS when they debut their system, it will look weak if they fail to stop MS from having a successful launch. They'd be better off doing nothing. On the other hand, if they can leak some subtle information that drives everyone nuts, but make it appear as if they haven't even tried to stop MS, they will look strong. Even if they don't stop MS, it will still look as if they didn't bother trying to stop them and they were in control the whole time.

I would have loved to try that controller out before making a judgement. Its funny how people cry about the shape of something they havent touched. Well I await to see what the yhave finally come up with.

They would have to leak something that's 1) Positive and 2) True. At the moment they have neither of those.

Secondly, don't forget about the PS2. Sony doesn't believe that the Xbox 360 is important enough at this point to risk potential PS2 hardware/software sales. *IF* the Xbox 360 negatively effects PS2 sales (with launch shortages that's a slim chance), expect Sony to react. Sony's always been a reactive company. They're comfortable where they are and they only react when they feel threatened.

They're not going to be able to convert the first wave of buyers anyway since those are typically the hardcore gamers who'll either get both systems or be xbox loyalists. Might be best for Sony to sit back, watch and analyze the console market and the effects of having two SKUs on the market. I gotta believe they are considering the possibility of the same tack.

That's the main point right there.

Sony has to get the PS2 through Christmas, which earns them a couple of hundred million per month for the holiday shopping season in the US alone. They don't want to do anything to hurt their current income.

The PS3 sales will come. Sony knows that. There's no reason to lose a half billion dollars in PS2 system and game sales just be one-up MS this year.

Very true, why keep the PS3 hype going strong with the holiday season starting. After the season, we'll start hearing about more stuff. Hopefully RSX info, an online plan and pricing. :)

Like RavenFox, I also find it kind of funny that anyone could be offended or hate a controller they've never used. Additionally, by all accounts I've heard controllers styled like that have been incredibly comfortable in the past -- surely you don't believe that Sony would drastically change its controller (which many consider the best controller around) and make it look goofy for no reason?

Statements like SynapticSignal just made are a far bigger insult to gaming than this controller ever could be -- its statements like that that might end up changing a controller that, for all we know, could be the most comfortable controller ever based on how some rabid nutcases on forums are judging the looks of it.

Some of you guys need to chill and stop judging the value of a controller (which is an entirely tactile mechanism) by what it looks like. Nobody can argue that it doesn't look goofy, but is it comfortable?

I too like the look of the PS3 controller, and I believe it'll be quite ergonomic too.
I'd be disappointed if they change it's shape to something more "conventional".

I thought it's bigger than it looks in the pics. There's a pic and video somewhere where the PS3 and the controller are being set up for photo shoot session, there's someone positioning them in various "poses" and at some point he (she? as there's only a hand in a cotton glove that's shown of the person handling them) holds the controler and to me it looked bigger than PS2 controller... or more like wider.
Could be the hand was a small persons hand (I think it was during the TGS), especially if it was an asian womans hand, I think it could be much smaller than average western male hand.

It was MJ.

Personally, though I think it's funny to make fun of the old bat', I don't necessarily have a problem with the shape. It more goes to just how small it actually does look. After hearing the 360's controller is even smaller than the S, I nearly weeped. I need some palm-grippin' action here!.:devilish:

(though, perhaps the shape of it will do just that.... I really want to try the dang thing out)
