Provocative comment by Id member about PS2 (and Gamecube)!

Attention seeking personality disorder.

One common method of pitiful attention seeking:

When called to account and outwitted, the person instinctively uses the denial - counterattack - feigning victimhood strategy to manipulate everyone present, especially bystanders and those in authority. The most effective method of feigning victimhood is to burst into tears, for most people's instinct is to feel sorry for them, to put their arm round them or offer them a tissue.

its nothing childish, i am a changed man now! the sheer spiritual strength of those matured ones have taught me a lot. :)

I am playing MGS2 and SH3 right now.....both look AMAZING....

MGS2 looks amazing not becse of polygons BUT how they have been used. Hideo Kozima AND HIS TEAM are genious. Each and every moment and Boss fights are INCREDIBLE. The fight with 3 Metal Gears is AWESOME!

Yup, you are right there deepak. both look GREAT! Both of em are totally INCREDIBLE games with AWESOME graphics. I agree. Konami rocks. :)

Wow.

This many pages because of some off hand comments.
PC-Engine summed it up for Xbox pretty well. (I'm PS2 Bias but honest.)

Anyways, so far as Doom3 is concerned Xbox is the only console that can do it.
First, the simplest point. The number and size of textures, PS2 lacks the memory.
Second, the effects and other things that D3 requires such as at least 2 textures per pixel (texels) exceeds or requires things PS2 is not good at.

PC gamers or anyone who has run a graphics benchmark take a moment and pause.
You know the demo's run high & low effects of each type. Get a performance mark (FPS) etc.
I have an nForce2 motherboard. It has a GF4 400 MX IGP.
3DMark2001SE. Try this some time. On low settings I get 60FPS (All effects on highest 30FPS.)
Most Xbox games are just 30fps. If DOOM3 was on low settings, 30FPS should be fine.

All three consoles are very different.
DOOM3 was designed with GF4 as the middle target.
All the programming is meant to squeeze its needs from that design.
Trying to run the game on any other console would be at a loss to all the work done.
It doesn't matter if there is a way to imitate and effect or process.
In the end the results would be different and the game would not be the same game.

David,

Second, the effects layers and that the game requires at least 2 textures per pixel. (texels)

well that's not exactly THE point....

wow.. and i was complaining on how bad my system is...

u know u're gonna get cursed for saying that...

Some people should just accept the FACT that Xbox IS superior to PS2 in MOST ways. GET OVER IT!!!

Maybe you should get over it instead? ;) I mean, what's it to you if someone refuses to believe in the superiority of Teh eXb0xx0r? Just follow your own advice and ignore those people.

As for me, I didn't buy PS2 because of superior hardware, I bought it because it's cool hardware (quirky sure, but can do great things with good coders exercising its many resources), the design is nice when standing vertically, and it is the market leader so it gets basically all the hottest software too.

Along with my cube, it means whatever XB exclusives there is, I can live without.

Let's just say we give the win to PS2 with regards to particle effects...it's still only ONE effect. What about all the other effects that the PS2 can't do that the Xbox can?

PS2 don't just have particle effects, it has other framebuffer stuffs like depth of field, blur, render to texture/compositing effects etc. It's very good at all that due to its insane fillrate.

If you check out ZoE, the flames coming from Jehuty's back are what looks like procedural textures. The points of light at the end of his antennas leave glowing trails. That's stuff I haven't seen anywhere else. Check out those trails, they're completely continuous and very smooth. Similar trails are made by other glowing things in levels, like the lights on either side of doorways inside the big ship in the 2nd level. I have no idea how it's done, it's so smoooooth so it doesn't look like polygons, and it's just these things that glow and leave trails, so it's not simple framebuffer blending either.

Overall Xbox is still the superior hardware.

Yadda yadda. Who gives a flying you-know-what?

Why do you feel this weird need to have everybody acknowledge this? Just play the games and get over it, okay.

BTW I don't think the Xbox has any problems with streaming as that is dependent on the developer not the hardware. GCN can do streaming too as said by F5.

Overall Xbox is still the superior hardware.

Not interested in a flame war between consoles, but what I want to know is why isn't the XBox producing the games that is head and shoulders above the PS2? Is it due to short dev time? Not coding to the metal? Hardware limitations (e.g. bandwidth)? etc??

For a console with that much more power (GPU + mem) I do expect the quality of graphics like DoA3 and SC2 in every game, not just fighters. Again, the PS2 isn't suppose to be at that level in terms of graphics compared to the XBox if you stack the specs and age against each other, but SC2 on PS2 does come very close. It might not be a strong example given its a fighter since it might not be as intensive as other genres, but still cool to know the underdog is doing better than just hanging in there. Can one honestly say the XBox version can be much better if it was an exclusive?

After saying that, what about games like GT4, MGS3 and J&DII? Graphic standards on the PS2 is still improving, which still amazes me what the devs are doing with the hardware. I am not stating the XBox graphics won't improve, but in all honesty, its hasn't improved all that much. As for the PS2 I am not even talking about release titles, but games like SH2 -> SH3.

Finally, I didn't say either the XBox or Cube can't stream, but I've not seen it implemented as well as J&D. J&D its almost like playing a ROM game, a very well programmed ROM game at that. I am just hoping J&DII can still stream that well.

well, considering it uses an "improved" version of the same engine, then i wouldnt worry about that if i were u...
BTW, J&D2 has been getting EXTREMELY high scores in reviews here in the UK, even PSM2 (which can be very hard sometimes, and gave the first a score of around 80) gave it 93, which is the highest a platformer has ever got from them, and one of the highest scores they ever gave...
the official PS2 mag gave it a 10 (i think), which is on par only with MGS2, Timesplitters2 and Vice City...
i'm so looking forward to this game it's not even funny

LB,

Does J&DII run in progressive scan? If it does I am definitely saving up for a TV or project with HDTV input (also might be worth finding that hack to get proscan out of my XBox)! Would look it up, but its late in this part of the world.

One Official Play Mag gave it a 3.5/5, some french mag give it a 8/10, Edge gave it a 7, Game Informer and EGM gave average-to-good scores (7/8 )

Overall, the game is seen to be highly well recieved on a technical level but "derivative" on the gameplay side.

Money and talent, prospect of a huge userbase are on the ps2 side.

Don't quote me on this but I think that the NTSC version does.

In other words, the same (improvements) can be done with the XBox, but the devs lack funds or not as talented??
