Of course in physics a quantum leap is in fact a very, very small leap indeed, so it's time to be miserable. :(
I was going to write the same, seeing as a quantum is the smallest possible unit, but if you look up the definition in a dictionary they specify the etymology as an electron shift into another orbit. That's effectively a generational transition, or the shifting of Earth into Mars's orbit. Relative to the tiddly size of an electron, a quantum leap is significant, and hence the somewhat backwards sounding 'quantum leap' is a legitimate reference to a significant change.

lol, beat me to it, though they probably meant huge but failed to use the correct terminology. Somewhat related is the PS4's support of 4K res:

Safe to say it's 4K upscaling to accompany their new TV.
Even the rumour only specifies 4k movie playback, which I'm sure will be true for movies. I doubt they'll even bother upscaling games - any 4k TV is going to have to have an upscaler for HD content.

This is true.

Although they could be referencing the massive generational leap that was the Sinclair QL of course.

4k movies on PS4...
There's no particular reason not to. It probably adds next to nothing to the machine's cost if you're putting in a BRD drive and HDMI anyhow. TBH I wouldn't be surprised if MS supported 4k movies too as a bonus selling point. If they don't want to burden the RRP with a licensing price, they can sell a CODEC license as a download or disc-based patch. The hardware design doesn't really need to adjust to 4k support.

As posted on GAF, 4k is 4X the pixels of 1080P, which I guess games like Super Stardust run 1080P. With the PS4 GPU at least 10X the PS3.

In other words you could see a few (PSN style) 4k games theoretically, though there's also some HDMI bandwidth issue.

Actually, 4k is 1920x2160, which is likely an attractive display resolution for passive 3D tvs. If it was 3840x2160 that would more likely have been called either 2160p or 8k (which incidentally also already exists I think). At least that's what I thought, but now I am starting to doubt ...

Edit: nope I am wrong

Yeah... the "cinema" wording is a bit strange. 2k is round about 1080P (i.e. 2mp) and 4k quadruple that resolution... the k here only refers to "horizontal resolution", if I remember correctly.

Yep. That discussion came up in the 4k thread, and the CE randomly inverted the measured dimension, talking vertical res 720p and 1080p, and then shifting to horizontal resolution for 4k.

As I say though, it's pretty immaterial for this thread. There's a 4k thread discussing its value to games and consumers. Supporting 4k doesn't need any particular hardware so isn't going to influence the choice of CPU or GPU (or APU, or stacked memory AI units).

The wording used in cinema is the horizontal resolution because the height varies depending on the film's aspect ratio and masking. It's also traditional, because before digital, it was the width of the actual film that was used (35mm is the width of the film). So 2K is 2048 wide, 4K is 4096 wide, and the height is whatever will match the aspect ratio.

The standard "4K" resolutions for HDMI seems to be both 4096x2160 and 3840x2160. The industry fractured a little, some displays currently available are 4096, others are 3840. The 4096 projectors are targetting professional applications much more than home theater. We had exactly the same issues with HD, 2048 wide products were for cinema application and existed before HD, while consumer electronics standardized on 1920 wide.

I hope Sony will standardize on 3840x2160.

Another one: Wii U rumored 2GB Ram, rumored 512 MB OS.
That must be the dumbest rumor ever. What on earth would Nintendo do with a half-gigabyte OS? Their resident software has ALWAYS been as bare-bones as it possibly could be, if there even was any at all. I can't even begin to imagine the universe in which that would change.

Agreed..the biggest load of bull since the moon landing ;)...Nintendo couldn't create an os that complex of they tried.

What if they want to provide 'apps' to take advantage of the tablet? It is better to reserve now than to want for more memory later. Early games don't need the RAM anyway, most of the games are ports from 512MB less OS systems.

I can defo see the ability to upscale to 4k...makes total sense..something like an advanced ANA scaler chip like what the 360 touted at the time.
My television scales up from.SD-HD very effectively.
