Post Xbox One Two Scorpio, what should Sony do next? *spawn* (oh, and Nintendo?)

LOL at the statement that nobody wants to talk about anything negative about Sony, we have threads on 'why would anyone buy a PS4' and 'why doesn't Sony get rid of their first party developers' but somehow we continue to hear how the discussion all pro-Sony and unfair to MS....

When mods are a major part of thread shitting you know a forum is in trouble.

No doubt some of the "fanboy jizz" conversation and a degree of the motivation for said "jizzfilled" conversation has indeed been deleterious to the aims of the thread and the forum as a whole, but when a thread turns into a snarky snake-turd eating its own shitty tail with mod oversight and blessing, I think a forum needs a wakeup call.

Sort yourself the fuck out B3D. I'm allowed to be a fanciful, possibility obsessed illiterate fucknob because I have no sway, but a conversation as interesting and potentially as important as this shouldn't be allowed to be eradicated by fanatical fantasists and snarky shitbombers while regulars and mods try and spunk over themselves simply because it feels funny and sexy.

Save that for the B3D date night, or Halo party chat, or Comicon, or whatever.

It doesn't. Gamestop gives you more than that for your console, they always had a console trade-in program regardless of MS or Sony involvement.

But it's a good filter algorithm, some posters are busy posting here while all the other threads are clean.

Now that you've come right out and said it, I wonder how many *still* won't be able to resist. :???:....:(.............:runaway: Can't.....not....respond....:devilish:

I am most interested in the 9th generation of consoles, and Nintendo's next move, Sony and MS are no mystery now, their moves are well documented. The WiiU has been the Dreamcast of this generation and Nintendo handhelds have been consistent earners for years, but even that is changing.

WiiU isn't special and if you have a Xbox One and Surface you have a WiiU, for instance.

As for the mods, I fully agree with you. Miss Geo, and Shifty is doing fine style wise as usual, but mods could put a better use to their great knowledge.

This is a thread in the Console Industry forum, which operates on a fairly relaxed basis and allows for nearer GAF levels of low-brow contributions. Also, it's old and worn out, and that's when threads tend to get silly. Most fo the sensible points have been said already. It'd be nice to have some serious discussion here, but that's impossible because everyone will take it off topic, and it's not worth the mods' time to moderate that much. It'd require upsetting large portions of the current population to try and retrain them into less purile behaviour. If you want serious business talk, join a serious business forum is all I can suggest*. If you want tech talk, open a thread in the tech forums about viable archictures for Neo and Scorpio, etc., and you'll get proper B3D levels of curating. If you want a current tech-focussed sub thread to be spun off, request it and it'll probably be done.

The Console board has always been the unsightly underside of B3D, with plenty of calls to remove it over the years, but it's also probably the best and most mature place on the entire internet to discuss console gaming and tech. Perhaps that's a damning endictment of console gamers...

* Edit: Or start a new business thread with a new question, as new threads start all wide-eyed and optimistic and early responses (to smart questions) tend to be serious and mindful.

Well then, with an aim of getting this back on topic: *jizz* pardon me.

Anyway, Sony are in the lead and shouldn't be in a hurry to get a new console to market. On the basis of discussions I've read on this forum, it would appear that the node shrink for the PS4 has essentially forced Sony to proceed with a larger, more powerful GPU.

So, if I were in Sony's shoes, I'd copy Microsoft's recent move, but later. I'd move to Polaris and Zen and release a slimmer, more powerful PS4, with a focus on high fidelity 1080p and the reported 1080p minimum framebuffer. I'd announce this early next year, with immediate release, and announce that a PS4K will release in early 2018 with sufficient power, and an appropriately high price, for native 4K.

That is, if I felt keeping the power advantage was important for sales.

I think Sony should aim at a more abstracted api to ensure forwards compatibility. Having PS4 Neo being fully backwards/fowards compatible with PS4 is great. People can upgrade and take all of their games with them. Then can pick the time and price they want to upgrade at. If PS5 comes out maybe 3-4 years after Neo, and they suddenly cut off all of the old games again, it just wouldn't make sense to me. Why give your customers a chance to switch to the competition? If they can't play their old games on the new system, maybe they decide to switch to Xbox if it's more powerful or has some features they want. Makes more sense to try to retain as many gamers as possible, and making your library transfer from one console to the next is probably the most sure way of doing that. Sacrificing some performance for an abstracted api would probably be worth it. They have the majority of the console market right now. It's in their best interest to keep it.

I don't know if that requires a suitable API or not. In theory if the hardware is hardware BC, it'll just work, maybe with some tweaks. However, we've heard the latest AMD GPUs aren't exactly hardware compatible with the older GCN GPUs, so maybe that's not realistic?

At this point I definitely agree that software should be playable on all future iterations of hardware. I think that's expected now off all devices.

There were some updates to GCN instructions (Tonga), but I'm not sure if there's anything particularly code-breaking.

Maybe the PS4 Neo exists to promote that push towards a more abstracted API. Would it be feasible to implement an API that could allow PS4 Neo games to render at a higher resolution when more powerful hardware than the Neo is used?

This strikes me as a safe strategy: release a new console with higher level API's in order to create software that can scale easily across future, more powerful hardware.
