PlayTV info

That pretty much makes the PlayTV unusable for me, and I think for many of the first gen PS3 owners.
My PS3 eats power, makes noise and heats up enough that I don't feel comfortable leaving it on 24/7.
I'll buy it for curiosity, and might use it for TV viewing and recording, but it won't replace my standalone DVR.

Mmm... I'm pretty confident that it does wake your PS3 up from standby to record, actually. Then it goes back into standby when it's done.

Well, Sony should clarify CVS's article then. Perhaps what the reviewers meant was PlayTV can't record if they turn off the PS3 using the switch at the back (or may be they hit a bug).

Waking PS3 from standby for recording sounds like a basic feature. I find it hard to imagine Sony would miss that feature out even in a 1.0 product.

I'm continually amazed by the number of people who use the switch on the back to turn their PS3 (and even PS2s!) on and off. This is the 21st century! Get hip to stand by or you might as well plug it into a clapper!

I switch my 1st gen PS3 off from the back because the fan keeps on turning even in standby.
It's virtually inaudible, but still annoying.
This "feature" came with a firmware update where remote play was first introduced, but I don't understand why woud the PS3 need cooling in standby.

Fan is spinning on standby if you have enabled remote wakeup(to let psp wake up ps3 remotely). Just disable remote wakeup and your ps3 stops spinning the fan.

But I want to keep remote wakeup on :)
A bit off-topic, but is it a common bug i that if I enable remote start via internet, after a minute or two the PS3 starts by itself after I put it on standby.
Happens every time I enable internet start.

I think it's feature not bug. At least my ps3 continues to spin fan if remote wakeup is enabled.

Yes, but mine starts completely, the green led lights and all.
Anyway, back to Play TV.
Well, this is a bit PlayTV related anyway, as I would only be able to use the remote play with PSP locally, not over internet.
Is this some bug that is in older, launch PS3's or is it just my machine?

I'll continue this offtopic a bit. I bet it's the router you ps3 is connected to. Try closing ps3 with network cable unplugged(and wlan turned off).

There's probably something probing machines on your network that just happens to press the right buttons for the PS3 to wake up. Something similar used to happen at work a lot with all the machines that had wake up on LAN enabled back then.

Remote play over the internet now requires you to enable some ports on your router I think - I can't do it myself now either (when I could do it before), and haven't gotten round to checking these settings yet.

Hello everyone.

Good news. CVG's article has been updated :

Now it's getting really interesting.

I have to wonder how someone overlooks something like that. Just like I have to wonder how someone overlooks being able to copy content. Are they reviewing this off of info they already have and videos or are they actually trying it out, hands-on, and testing it? I guess they could be using non-retail review copies, that aren't finalized. Which would explain some of the inconsistencies between "reviews". Which makes me wonder how SCEE let an NDA loose enough to allow reviews get through with incomplete hardware.

Heh... no change in score ? ^_^

I think PlayTV is a great start. HD recording and season pass would be nice addition in the future. These advanced features will undoubtly seal PS3 as a media hub, instead of a Jack-of-all box. It would be great if SCEA and Sony Electronics follow through.

As it stands now, I would already buy PlayTV if it comes to US.

There is a lot of scope for the PSP and PlayTV integration. Sony should go beyond XMB to establish its media platform. I am talking about the CES 2007 PSP demo; the one where they drag and "throw" a playing TV show on a PSP screen to a living room TV on-the-fly. Most of the foundations (e.g., DLNA, Marlin DRM, Blu-ray Portable Copy, PlayTV copy, Playstation Home media sharing, RemotePlay, ...) are already in-place. They'll need to define cross device use cases (or rather extend the ones found in Marlin) ;-)

Back to square 1 again?

One of the big talking points of PlayTV has always been it’s compatibility with the PSP; and while we can confirm you won’t be able to physically copy files over to the PSP’s Memory Stick Duo, there’s plenty of other functionality provided with Remote Play.

That was posted on the 4th by ThreeSpeech.

Now what were we saying about "talking between SCE divisions" again ? This is rather embarrassing. >_<
