PlayTV info

Hi,

I've been lookiing forward to this for forever in Japan.
All major channels support HD broadcast, and the quality
is standardized across the board. The PSP output is also
perferctly geared toward the daily commuter Japanese
consumer.

A recent issue of Famitsu had an interview with the creators,
and along with a lot of talk about how fast the interface is
they also noted that 1 hour of recording requires around 4gig
(resolution not specified), and PSP transfer speed requires
roughly half the time of the actual television program.

The official page was also updated with a movie.
Click on the left button of the 4 button grouping in bottom-center
to view the movie.

Play-TV: Watch Seperate Channel While Recording?

Hi,

Sorry to bump the thread. I just have a quick question
for those who already own Play-TV.

Does Play-TV allow you to record one program while
watching another? The Japanese version, Torne, is a
single tuner, so I'm wondering if it might not have this
ability.

Thanks.

The Play TV is twin tuner, so you can watch one program and record another.
However, it is a bit more limited than most dedicated boxes, as you can't record two channels at the same time.

Hi,

Thanks for the response.

It looks like the Torne tuner is a single tuner
with a pass through, so you can record one
program with Torne, and then switch over
to your TV (TV Tuner) to watch another.

Not the most elegant solution, but at least
it allows for recording one program while
watching another.:???:

There probably simply isn't the bandwidth on the mobo and to the HDD to allow for it when playing a game at the same time as recording, even though it's only really copying the raw data to the HDD. I suppose that they could do it if in the PlayTV application itself, but it would cause all sorts of confusion and headaches when having two programmes selected for recording at the same time and then leaving the application.

Actually, I've never tried it, can you be recording one programme and pause another live programme at the same time?

Only one? Why so incredibly cheap?! The most basic standalone digital boxes come with two tuners, and certainly PlayTV costs more than them. Is Torne that much cheaper?

I just tried it, and it works - recording and pausing at the same time, so the system is certainly capable of recording two channels at the same time inside of the PlayTV application.

It's about 8,900 yen, so given the exchange rate, quite a bit cheaper.
Nonetheless, it is perplexing why it is a single tuner.
I'll rephrase that. What's the cheapest price of a dual-tuner digibox in Japan? Is it sufficiently high that adding a second tuner is clearly a noteworthy cost, or is a second tuner likely to be a couple of bucks on the cost of the device? I'd have thought the cost difference for including a second tuner is vastly outweighed by the feature set making the product far more desirable.

Hi,

I'm no expert on the matter, but from what information I was able
to gather from various electronic store homepages, a dual tuner
should run around 10,000yen = $90.00 in Japan.

That being said, unless SCEI has something up their sleeve
software-wise, the single tuner is most likely a cost saving measure.

Japanese forums point to somewhat high broadcast satellite
licensing rights as another possible reason for the exclusion of a
dual tuner.

As I stated in my previous post, users can still utilize their TV
tuner to view a separate channel while the PS3 records another.
SCEI may have considered HD television uptake in Japan as well
when deciding to go with a single tuner.

A little disappointing, but attractive enough for people without
a DVR like me.
