Right now Vince's logic is "hahaha Sony can make all the BE and VS and PS3 chips in few months and they say that mass-manufacturing, which I assume means the same exact final full-speed PS3 chips, starts no later than middle 2005... are they going to sit on finished consoles for a year or more oh da lol ahaha".

This argument makes lots of assumptions and it is the son of the previous one that followed Toshiba's statement that by first half of 2H CY2004 they were going to manufacture chips in Oita #2 which people seemed to take as "PS3 chips mass-produced at high-rates by the end of 2004"

The whole reason why caddyless optical media is the standard today is that caddys tend to cost as much or more than the disc itself to make in mass quantities.

Listening to the way you're talking here makes me wonder how McDonald's can sell a Happy Meal for a few bucks without the little toy they include making the whole thing cost [Dr. Evil]a million dollars![Dr. Evil], or some such rediculous figure.

Look, plastic, springs, liners, shutters and glue is fuckin cheap, alright? What's the street price for a blank Minidisc? What do you think they cost to manufacture??? Besides, there's no liner inside a MD caddy.

I believe in a Fall 05(I concider fall september to december) Japanese launch and a Spring 06 USA launch.

Who said anything about [Dr. Evil]a million dollars![/Dr. Evil]?

I'm talking about anywhere from roughly an extra $.50 to $1.00 in cost per unit, or about as much as the optical disc itself costs to fabricate in the first place.

The comparison with Happy Meals is invalid, because they don't have to have the same precision and quality that the caddy for a piece of optical media does.

Plus on top of that, a Happy Meal is least a few times more expensive than the fab costs of a DVD -- I'm sure McDonalds includes the $.50 or so it costs to put a toy in a Happy Meal in the profit margins for its food.

The food itself certainly isn't pushing the unit COGS budget.

I'd estimate the cost for a minidisc is just under $1.00, about half of which is the cost for the caddy.

I didn't know about there being no liner in an MD caddy, sorry.

Less time to see the others consoles and games, so they can get the hype and the old fans. (Just a possibility )
