Playstation 5 [PS5] [Release November 12 2020]

Yes but that doesn't mean that software sales weren't good for it and sony was taking 30% cuts on all that software the whole time. If the psp wasn't doing well for sony financially they wouldn't have made a second one.
If you look at software sales over time, in both actual and real terms, they were inversely disproportionate. I.e the game that sold the most was during the first 12 months of PSP's launch and as hardware units sales increased the overall number of software sales declined massively. This is inconsistent with the sales of hardware.

TL;DR the more hardware units PSP sold, the less software sold. Both in real terms and proportionately, which is just staggering. This is acknowledged as a symptom of piracy.

It just strikes me as odd that Sony and devs continued to support it all these years. Surely it might jave generated some profit but not great enough.

According to your link the PSP sold 331 software units. 82m hardware units sold. that is an attach rate of 4 games per psp sold. That seems in line with other portable systems

Total software isn't that far off also. Game boy sold roughly 500m software units , GBA 377, 365 for instance.

I didn't include any link. PSP's attach rate was below PlayStation and PS2, which is likely where Sony's expectations were. Again, the the more hardware Sony sold, the fewer individual games sold. In a healthy ecosystem, the more hardware units = more individual sales of games because the potential audience is growing.

Sony went on the record about how piracy has hammering sales of PSP games, which in turn was deterring developers from bringing more titles to it. Sony did not shy from talking about PSP fell short of their expectations.

It was on par with other portable consoles. Piracy harms all sales.

And yet, and importantly, it sold below Sony's expectations. PSP was targeting a different base than Gameboy. All the comms and marketing were about PSP offering games of the sophistication of PlayStation home consoles.

I wonder why Sony canceled the psp to TV dock/dongle/cable.

It could be switch before switch

That's quite slow right?

IIRC on ps2 or ps3 era, there are more than 3 revisions in just a year. Or my mind is playing tricks

Wonder what the difference is on this round of revisions.

And yet more importantly they still went and dropped a lot of money on a sequel. Seems like really odd behavior for something that didn't do well.

If you are going to quit after one failed attempt, you may as well not bother. It's a good job Sony and Microsoft do not have such a defeatist attribute, otherwise we would never have got Vita or Xbox 360.

Don't know if missing out on the vita would be a problem. MS has now launched its forth console and has no signs of stopping and that is with software sales similar or lower than the psp.

Looking at that press release they axed even more weight. Does the new 6nm process reduce enough heat so they can get away with further reducing the heatsink?

The only immediate difference between this model and the 2021 model that we can work out from both product manuals is the weight which has gone down by a similar jump to the 2021 model. This obviously results in different parts/internals.

The Digital PS5 (CFI-1202B) is 200 grams lighter at 3.4kg (so 500 grams lighter than the original launch digital PS5), and according to the manual of the Disc PS5 (CFI-1202A) its 300 grams lighter at 3.9kg (so 600 grams lighter than the original launch Disc PS5).

This now means that the new model Disc PS5 now weights what the Digital PS5 did at launch.

Poor heatsink, you will be missed.

Not wanting to take a hit is not arrogance, it's staying in business.
I really don't think that not raising the price would have in any way impacted whether Sony stay in business or not. Playstation is hugely profitable for Sony - one of their very few profitable arms - so this is why the move has a tinge of greed. Also, and yet again, it just wasn't handled well at all - but then again Sony has been mishandling their marketing and image for a little while now.
