All I said initially was I run into a problem with phantom activations of the triggers and discovered it was just the slightest touch of resting fingers doing it. I think it was Silent Buddha who first mentioned the activations from being placed on a surface. But yeah it looks like the triggers are pretty well designed to minimize that.

Maybe the trigger sensitivity thing is just a first generation quirk that will disappear. Or I have a slightly defective gamepad.

WRT unwanted trigger activations when putting the PS5 controller down, I couldn't say how it is put down or what the conditions are since I can't see their hands as they put the controllers down. But it has happened to Shenpai (YouTube) in one of her Souls playthroughs. It's happened to Jericho, Strippin, itmeJP and CohhCarnage on Twitch. There's other streamers and VODs where I've seen it whose names I don't recall since I don't regularly watch them.

I'm not going to scrub through hundreds of hours of twitch VODs to find examples, but if I have time I'll go through a few hours of Shenpai's video's to see if I can find the example that I'm thinking of.

    Regards,
    SB

I think the point that Shifty was making, was that if you can find examples of anything if you look hard enough. But that's not necessarily indicative of the normal behaviour. If this was a widespread problem, a lot of people would be talking about it a lot.

I did a fair amount of inadvertent horse punching and shooting in RDR2 when I played on PS4 (DualShock 4). I can't recall it happening on PS5 (Dual Sense) but it may well have happened in cases where it was not noticeable.

Gotcha. I only mentioned it before because I only ever really see it with the PlayStation controllers, those same people don't experience that, admittedly minor, issue with their Xbox controllers despite most of them using Xbox controllers for PC and Xbox games versus PlayStation controllers only for PlayStation exclusive games. Hence why I made that post (https://forum.beyond3d.com/posts/2249905/ ) that mentioned being reminded of it by Swaaye's post even though it wasn't the same thing as what he's experienced.

Purely anecdotal and not meant to imply that it's endemic, but also noting that the Xbox controller's design makes it almost impossible for the same thing to happen (haven't personally seen anyone do it). I'm sure there's some way to depress the trigger buttons when putting it down, like at a 45 degree angle with the triggers pointed down or something.

    Regards,

Nope, it's never happened to me using the previous Xbox One controller or the iterative Xbox Series controller. Nor the Switch Pro controller either.

I hit the triggers on my Xbox One controller when I'm watching videos on it all the time. But I'm usually laying in bed and put the controller down wither on the bed or at an angle onto the night stand. User error, for sure, but I do it at least a few times a week, so my movie/show starts rewinding or fast forwarding.

Can't wait to see the power consumption at 120hz with VRR!

is VRR really able to smooth out fluctuations between 40-120fps ?
I guess i'll try it out soon enough.
At least it'll be interesting to see how high the framerate can go in these games.

I have the update working now. Only supports 48-120. So no unlocked frame rates for 40fps modes in insomniac games. But the performance modes do hit 70-80 fps. It’s pretty great. Dirt 5 is buttery smooth now.

Is that the PS5 or your TV? Different TVs support support a variety of VRR ranges.

edit: a quick update and reboot and my PS5 is also showing VRR support between 48hz and 120hz. My TV supports 40hz to 120hz at 4K.

I think the 40fps mode stays capped there, as VRR would bot work well at these fps. It may start being useful above 48fps.

That's awesome. Have you tried Elden Ring?

Or his job is to better archive games that are currently in production. To make them easier to use decades from now.

This was my first thought. There has been some open industry discussion on this, albeit in forums that are not consuming facing. People generally know about high profile examples like the Mass Effect DLC and Red Dead Redemption source code losses but it happens quite a lot. It's not just about preserving source code and assets but the ability to run certain dev tools.

But would VRR help with frame pacing there? Not that I would want to play that again.

It should, VRR is a clone of Freesync (and gsync) from the HDMI forum, it is essentially the same technology (i think it came almost a decade ago to pc). It helps with framepacing, image sharpness and even stutters. Ive had it since 2014, and once youve had it you wont go back.
Also begs the question, why didnt they implement AMD's Freesync premium pro for the consoles (amd gpu), works basically at the driver level so for all games and probably has more range/features than the current VRR implementation. The One/OneX have VRR too, limited to 60fps range.
Good that the feature made its way though, its a relatively simple technology that made its debut with the launch of the 2013 consoles. A reason could be that its a ultra niche market in the TV space, most do not have it (neither mine).

Given DF's investigation of RSPC3 emulation on PS, it seems PS3 emulation isn't realistic on PS5. :(
