Playstation 5 [PS5] [Release November 12 2020]

Do we know if most tv with vrr support double the frame rate under their lowest range ? Don't remember the tech name on pc .. LFC I believe ?

But would VRR help with frame pacing there? Not that I would want to play that again.

It wouldn't help with frame pacing issues.

VRR is helpful for variable framerates as long as you aren't sensitive to the variability in the tactile (pressing button) -> visual feedback loops (seeing the result). Most aren't so most will find VRR to be a large improvement in their experience.

VRR can't help with frame pacing. Uneven frame pacing will still be uneven with VRR. You just now have a slightly smoother visual appearance (no doubled, lost frames or torn frames depending on how the developer deals with it in their game) but you still have uneven frame pacing (stutters and hitches). That's why VRR has limited value in a title like Elden Ring. It helps with the variable frame rate but does nothing for the frame pacing issues.

SB

@Karamazov I often forget that VRR isn't just about smoothing frame rates dips but allows frames rates above the conventional 30 or 60fps.

This will be give DigitalFoundry a new interesting comparison metric in some multi-platform titles. I'm not sure it will be useful but it's something new to discuss and it will be genuinely interesting to see how hard the consoles can drive framerates.

checked few games outside of patched games for vrr, in elden ring, ride4, acc, lost judgment works, in gt7 unfortunetly not

shocking how more room miles has for targetting 60fps
I'll be interested to see Ratchet & Clank, i.e. not a cross-gen title. That's not to say 100fps is not impressive over its 30fps PS4 counterpart, but you know what I mean..

i've downloaded R6 siege last night so i can try it out after work today.
BUT ! this thing reminded me that i've had VRR option sitting here for the XsS and unused, i had not even activated it in the TV menu !
So last evening i tried guardians of the galaxy with its unlocked framerate mode and it indeed felt much better than last time i tried it without VRR on.
