It's an available feature after 8 months and it's 8 months late.
Sony did volunteer that NVMe support wouldn't be available for launch, I think the only timeframe they gave was "later this summer".
If we get to autumn and it's not available, then it's late.
In the Road to PS5 video from Q2 2020, Cerny said they would publish a list of compatible NVMe drives closer to release, hinting at compatibility being there from launch.
He probably meant through the internal NVME expansion slot.
You can run non PS5 games off the external HDD…I have it set up so only PS5 games are internal, the rest on the external.Yeah, this one. He's still holding off on getting one due to concerns about having to swap games frequently onto and off off the internal NVME drive. He and his children play a lot of games semi-frequently (multiplayer, MMO, etc.).
Of course, that would assume that he could actually find one in stock.

Sure, but he's upgrading his games to PS5 versions whenever possible, so being able to run PS4 games on external drives doesn't help him.
Do games that receive patches to become PS5 versions still run on External? For example, will Ghost of Tsushima with the upcoming PS5 patch run on external USB drives? If not, then external USB drive isn't a good option for him.

They're still PS4 games, so run on external drives
That’s not correct, specifically with the game he’s mentioning. It will be a native PS5 game so it won’t run from external. The “old”, non director cut will, because it’s just an enhanced PS4 pro game.

The current version of that game is PS4 and installs to a external drive. The new version of the game with the expansion packs and proper PS5 version will be internal. But the 60fps updates to games that some refer to as PS5 versions, are able to be installed to external drives.
I was just trying to ensure you had the correct information from the questions asked.Sure, but he's upgrading his games to PS5 versions whenever possible, so being able to run PS4 games on external drives doesn't help him.

Sorry, I thought I was helping.
Patched PS4 pro+ games will run on external, like the previous update for Ghost of Tsushima, The Last of Us 2, Days Gone, etc. The new update for Ghost that will have a native PS5 port only from the internal SSD.
Unsure in the store - but it's very clear on the dash and in game management, for example - if you highlight a game to play it and it's PS5 on external it will say 'transfer' and if you want to move games between drives you can highlight PS4 and PS5 games separately so you know which ones need to be on which drive, this helps any management massively as you can easily see which games can be moved from internal to external and still play (etc).Any user facing icon or something to indicate this (PS4, ps4+, PS4 became PS5, PS5) in the store and dash?
