Playstation 3 e3 thread 2

Just finished watching Microsoft's conference.

The video quality wasn't good, but from what I could see, some of the titles just didn't appear leagues beyond what we have today. Other titles looked fantastic, rivaling the PS3 demos shown today.

I'm going to wait to pass judgement on the comparative power of the machines, but I will say that Sony's presentation was a hell of a lot more persuasive. I feel awed by what they showed me over there.

Back to MS... seems they're pushing XBL hard... It's like I expected - it becomes a marketplace for them to sell you movies and music and things. I do like the wifi Media Center capabilities, though.

One final thought - too much schlock, MS. And dumb phrases and proclamations of reaching "1 billion" people. :)

Yeah it kinda was

I know nobody posted this stuff so I'm going to do it now.

Dr. Richard Marx, the inventor of EyeToy, was on hand to show off the PS3's wireless HD IP Camera. The demo, recalled rumors that the machine will have Minority Report-esque motion-sensing capabilities. Marx held two small cup-like objects in his hands, which move the cups on the screen in real time.

and

The Cell in PS3 can decode up to 12 HD streams simultaneously at full frame rate. Sony also showed off Cell displaying 1000 movie thumbnails at the same time"

Doesn't anybody think this is outer this world.

Im watching now. pretty good demo. if it was on tv it would have killed x360 special... *shaking head* yet I must be the only person in the entire that is underwhelmed by the games on PS3...? they basically look like the best that MS brought out... imho gt5 wasnt that great and i was hoping it would be...

certainly NOT as great looking as PGR3. Killzone is no Gears of War either but the decoding of those 12 HD is very impressive...

whats striking is that obviously the limits that hold x360 cpu to 3.2 ghz also held sony to 3.2ghz...

I dont get why kutaragi says that at 3.2ghz the Ps3 is twice as fast as the x360 cpu...?

generally the only part of Ps3 thats better numerically is the additional 50 Mhz of the nvidia part... I was hoping that ps3 would be a miracle machine but i guess the laws of physics dont change even for Sony.

Most surprising part is that PS3's GPU has double the transistor count of Xbox360's GPU, yet has faster clock speed...that is quite a monster that Nvidia brought.

i assume that the main xbox360 gpu has around 300million trans. give or take + the additional logic/eDRAM chip around 100million transistors give or take

the x360 cpu delivers 114gflops i believe while the sony cpu delivers 218 gflops .

My understanding is that the GPU package cantinas 150 million transistor core and ~100 million transistor memory.

Some clarifications in here: There was no GT5 there, just a demo of what a GT5 could look like (there's a difference).

While the Vision Gran Turismo wasn't all that impressive - it did pull some plus points later on when they showed all the cars pitting in and the crew working on the cars. But it also puts into perspective how great GT4 looks today, even if the IQ wasn't there, only 5 opponents etc.

As for the most impressive game/demo they showed: Undoubtedly Killzone IMO. If that's any indication on what a final game by a talented artist will look like...

1080p standard resolution and Blu-Ray: the real HD era

E3 2005: PS3 to Output 1080p Standard
An HD revolution.
by Ivan Sulic
May 16, 2005 - Among one hundred billion other bits of technical information, we recently learned that the PlayStation 3 will be capable of outputting a 1080 progressive scan image.

Very few pieces of media currently support 1080 progressive scan display. For reference, Apple recently announced that it would release new movie trailers in 1080p format, provided gamers used their new Quicktime application. Additionally, a couple of movies (namely Terminator 2) support 1080p.
While a lot of televisions do not currently support the ultra high-end format, it's great to see Sony looking way into the future for its next system.

UPDATE - 6:22PM - We have just been updated by our away team at the SCEA conference that not only will 1080p be supported by the system, but that this is considered the standard resolution for the system. Every game for the system will be in incredible, indelible, indubitable HD.

Nobody at IGN even owns a TV that can do 1080p, but that's the system's goal - to give HDTV a killer app piece of hardware that people will no longer be able to live without. Get your wallet ready...

1080p standard resolution and Blu-Ray: the real HD era
hd is 720 i and up .

Btw if ps3 games really run at 1080p by default then thier lead in hardware may deminish by the forced res .

It doesn't seem like Sony is forcing developers to use any particular resolution, so if a game needed it they could just drop the resolution down to 720p. That would be fine with me, since my hardware doesn't support 1080p, and I don't plan on upgrading anytime soon.

LOL! So now Sony's ability to run at 1080p by default is a negative? jvd, please, stop, you're killing me.

Still the EYE game I can't remember the name looks real cool. It was like the guy was actually talking to the girl and she was talking and laughing back. To me it kind of seemed like it was his girlfriend.

1080p is a pretty useless drawcard. How many people have a TV which can run 1080p? Official HD standard of 1080i has barely sunk into living rooms. Seems much more like a big-dick contest with MS (typical Sony marketing -granted they know how to please their fans)

People need to remember that a game running at a higher res will either need lower quality visuals or a lower framerate. How many times has this board balked at non-60fps as standard?? Seems this gen for both MS and Sony seem to target HD, which leaves me doubting 60frames on all titles.

I'll be interested to see how this impacts PAL, who have been majorly shafted with regards to high def gaming this gen.

Also seems that Sony really knocked out their audience though demos much more than MS. They did this for PS1 and PS2 as well, but it's a pity the actual results of these demos had no bearing on the quality of games on the systems. Ballroom scene anyone?
