Official White Knight Story (level 5 RPG) thread

Continuing the OT conversation a bit longer, on the grounds there won't be any more WKS/WKC content before TGS probably, the link to existing threads when posting a nerw topic does encourage using them. Plus cultural conditioning to Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and save the planet, further promotes adding to existing open topics.

Regards the game though, I was interested in it at first, liking Level 5's creations on the whole, but MGS4 set me against it and all epic Japanese games once and for all. The myriad stereotpical gaming aspects that just drive me nuts, and their inability to flippin' well end, annoy more far more than the game entertains. If it's late and I want to go to bed, I shouldn't be 'forced' into playing a game in the hopes of finding a save-point, or lose all my work since the last one, and I shouldn't have to sit through an hour's worth of cutscenes and prattle. I expect pointless grind, more ludicrous content than a sane man would ever wish for, bizarre plots that don't care one jot for coherency...

I'm not a fan of Japanese games ;) WKS would have to be something very different from the usual to have any chance of getting me to pay it more than a passing interest out of curiosity.

They seemed jolly excited, but I couldn't spot the resemblence myself. What this game needs (and all other character creation games) is a camera feature where you take a pic of yourself and the model is adapted to fit the portrait. Shouldn't be too hard if you already have the customization features in, given current face recognition tech. It wouldn't even need to be perfect, but could come up with a few best fits and let the player choose, and then add customizations.

I think it's the eyes. There is some resemblance. The hairstyle matched her fringes in front but is missing the bun.

Auto-gen would be awesome and time saving.

The more interesting info is in this GAF thread: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=338043

The source is a Japanese gaming magazine (Dengeki).

Online play is official now. Minor details available but here we go

The game consists of 3 major parts concerning online gameplay

Story Part
Live Part
Quest Part

The Story Part and Live Part are seamless and a Town Square is mentioned. Speculation here, but my guess is when you enter a city, you get transferred to a server or what not. Up to 16 avatars (players) can be in any given Town Square. From there, you can party up with up to 4 players to go questing and what not. Items can also be traded between players, though details aren't available yet.

Two simple things here, that shouldn't be rocket science:

1. If there's a thread on a topic already, it very likely also contains information on that topic.
2. If you make a new thread, you'll first have checked if there isn't at least a recent thread on the topic. Very often, you'll find the older thread. Now you have to start thinking about whether or not that older thread is so old that you actually need a new thread. Except that there is no user logic whatsover in making a new thread - this seems to me to be a desire that is only useful for board management.
3. When you do make a new thread, then once you've entered the title, the board will helpfully show you all threads that may match your subject automatically, so as to prevent you from making duplicate threads. Here there's no filter for threads that are actually older than a certain time, nor is there any admin message suggesting you to check the dates and if older than ... what? a year? ... to make a new thread rather than click one of the older threads and continue there.

In other words, this board really wants you to reuse existing threads. ;)

Personally, I think if reusing old threads is really destructive to board performance, maintenance or whatever, then implement a feature that locks threads that have a latest post older than x amount of days.

Otherwise, I would make/keep preventing double threads from occuring to main priority, and be happy that users here know how to use the search button.

/off-topic

Really curious about this game. It's been quiet for a fair while, as this thread itself suggests ;), but the game looked promising back then, and it looks promising now.

Sorry, couldn't resist! :p

The new online features sound like they could be pretty interesting. Level 5 always has really great item features, so I'd assume they'll integrate item trading / creating into the Online component pretty heavily.

I'm actually surprised that people didn't know about the online at all. I've known about it for AGES. Phil Harrison talked about it at the GDC from last year, if I remember correctly.

You're a really slow counter! Sorry, couldn't resist! :p

Whenever I use a sentence with a number, I should know better ... it's nigh on impossible to count afterthoughts beforehand.

Found a trailer from TGS08, a new one that looks mostly real time and some heavy textures for what might be cgi.

Also upon reading here the posts that say that the game will feature an online mode.

WTH?? I guess the game devs caved in to the US media that interviewed them and basically demanded that their game seems to somehow have an online mode even though its a single player RPG!!

No wonder the game is taking so long to release, this an Tekken 6, what else could go wrong, I shudder to ask and please I am not trying to be negative here, I am just a bit disappointed.

Is there something wrong with the online mode ? Or are you disappointed with the (late) release date ? I don't mind them exploring online RPG angle though. Personally, there are more than enough games this fall to keep up. >_<

Actually I'm pretty sure that Phil Harrison talked about WKC having an online component as far back as GDC2007.

White Knight Story Press Conference video (bad quality but contains presentation slides):

14 minute video. What more could you ask for? Besides everything else you could ask. Like a translation. Those of you not fluent in Japanese may want to skip ahead until about 5 and a half minutes in.
