So what's the verdict? The PS3 will be based on the CELL concept. The patent outlines a general configuration of a CELL chip. Will the PS3 pull off 1 TFLOPS? Maybe, maybe not.

Interesting piece of new.....from [urlhttp://the-magicbox.com/gaming.htm]The Magic Box[/url]

Toshiba mentioned that they have received financial support from Sony to build a new chip factory in south of Japan. The new factory will manufacture PlayStation 3 processor Cell, as well as other processors.

Well i was out at the movies with my little sis . But catching up on this thread i'd just like to say we can belive anything we want but its just that till sony announces the offical specs. I do feel some people are on crack or something though feeling it will far surpass 1 tflop and be priced at 300 or so.

The 1tflop figure is based on Kutaragi promising that PS3 will 1000X as powerful as PS2. The flops for EE is 6.2Gflops, so the performance of PS3 should be 6.2Tflops, not 1Tflops. So you see, Pana, Paul, the actual performance might be even greater than the example given in the patent. That's what all those Cell chips in the patents were, examples of possible configurations, NOT actual final specifications for Cell chips.

Even Itanium 2 doesn't come close to 6.2Tflops, so I wonder how Intel will be able to design a Xbox2 CPU that is competitive with PS3's CPU performance and costwise.

PS != Cell Processor
No "Cell" processor for the PS3?

April 18, 2003 - Online news sites are reporting that the spring 2003 issue of Electronic Design Chain, an electronics trade magazine, features PlayStation creator Ken Kutaragi on the cover, and also contains very surprising news about the Playstation 3.

According to the reports, Kutaragi mentions that final production of the "Cell" chip, originally thought to be used in the PlayStation 3, may not be ready until 2007. He also confirms that the CPU in the PlayStation 3 will in fact not be the Cell processor, contrary to earlier reports.

With a targeted PlayStation 3 launch in 2005/2006, delayed production of the Cell processor may have caused Sony to find a different solution for their next-generation console.

Things are getting waaaay out of hand

Actually I think PS3 will be able to pull off 1 PFLOP

This latest rumor wouldn't suprise me one bit. I always though sony seemed a little ambitious.

...and all this talk abbout sony working with Nvidia doesn't make any sense to me. i mean it's possible but when it came down to it, MS would just make the sony consle more expensive to manufacture, just like the xbox. And nvidia would ask for what they wanted or they wouldn't do it, just like what they'd do with microsoft. Not only that, but sony wouldn't own the chip, if that was even a option, MS would have jumped all over it.

You DONT multiply everything by 1000X. 1000X means the total power will be that great with everything put together, the cpu + rasterizer + greater efficiancy will all together do it.

1,000x doesn't mean 1,000x the FP power... 1 TFLOPS as theoretical max is more than enough of an achieved goal for Cell... 6.2 TFLOPS... nah, that IS a pipe-dream...

We talked about a REYES-like renderer... using lots of micro-polygons, displacement mapping, motion blur and anti-aliasing, rendering in 720p, using non trivial shaders ( moderatly long ones ), high resolution textures ( and also procedural ones ), etc...

If you ported that renderer and that scene that on PlayStation 3 ( with also the Physics, A.I., etc... ) runs at ~30 fps I doubt you would see it run faster than 0.03 fps or something like this ;)

PlayStation 3 using the patent Broadband Engine would not only have lots of FP power, but also lots of Integer processing power as well ( 1 Tera OPS ) and much more bandwidth and Local Memory...

We have e-DRAM and a 1,024 bits bus to it and connecting all the APUs in each PE ( PE bus is 1,024 bits wide ), 4 MB of total Local Storage ( 128 KB of Local Storage, realized in SRAM, in each APU.. this is where the execution of code happens ) and in each APU we have thirty-two 128 bits registers...

We haven't just increased the FLOPS and OPS rating of the machine, we added more of those features which helps keep the efficiency high...

Yes, that efficiency might add to the perf difference between it and the EE... What is the real world performance of the EE? The specs are 6.2Tflops, but the real world number is likely lower...

Anyway last time sony said 100x perf... and they showed 100x perf in one of the specs, accompanied by improvements in all others.... 350K low rez no effects poly peak for psone.... 75M raw GS for ps2....

100K ingame with barely any effects psone.... 10-30M+ for ps2 with lots of effects and higher rez...

So indeed, a 100X jump was done on one of the specs, and probably others too... the EE is probably 100x+, the vram bandwith, etc...

None of this is even official news and already you have anti Sony fanboys jumping on it across websites.

There have been sony people saying Cell will be used, and those who say it will not. Who do you belive?

Oh and Sony and toshiba are building the PS3 chip factory.

Sony may fall back to Phase 3.

The Phase 3 workstation, scheduled to appear around 2005-2006, will have the Emotion Engine 3 and Graphic Synthesizer 3, which will have drastically changed architectures. As a result, the workstation will have 1,000 times performance of the development tool workstation, and will handle 4,000 x 2,000-pixel pictures at 24-to-120p. At this stage, Playstation3 will be taking a shape, Sony said.

Paul,

that article is from 1999 and the Phase 1-3 workstation line was halted and we haven't even seen the EE2 and GS2... the GS presented at the ISSC Conference in 2001 was not the GS2, but a transition between GS 1 and GS 2... it was the GS 1.5 basically...

I do not think Sony has THAT much R&D to work in parallel with Cell and with another technology that still allows them to reach their performance goal or even close to it...

None of this is even official news
Official? How can you get more official than Ken himself (mind you: recently) stating that Cell will not be used in PS3, and that Cell itself may not be ready for use until 2007?

Those were not Kutaragi's own words...

These problems may be a few years out, though. IBM has not announced when it will release the final chip, but the Cell project was originally envisioned as taking five years, suggesting that the final product may not be ready until as late as 2007. Although Sony refuses to talk about its future plans for the chip, it does admit that the Cell chip will not be the CPU in the Playstation3, reportedly slated for release in 2005.

I do not see a "Kutaragi confessed/stated" thingy...
