Wasn't it pretty obvious?

As one pointed out... why in the world would they announce that RARE was making 2 DS games at an XBox conference?

Number of those other rumors were also proven false by MS... moving the Japan launch back and so forth.

40,000 interior + 40,000 exterior = 80,000 total = 8 x 10,000 total in PGR2.

Plus they'll be doing a lot more in terms of lighting and effects.

IGN said that the cars will be comprised of 40,000 exterior polys and another 40,000 polys for the interior of the cars, for a total of 80,000 polys.

That's an 8X's increase.

I thought the days when polygon counts mattered were long, long gone. Remember Doom3's polycount?

Screenshots and movies will speak for themselves, and so far PGR3 looks like the best looking launch game.
 
Okay, whats so special about the interior of a race car? PGR3 is a racing game and not an autoshow, right?

Obviously they want to have an in the car view. Maybe for PGR 3, the left analog will be for steering and the right analog will be for panning the camera around inside the car. That could wind up looking very cool. 8)

My math isn´t failing, because you play either with outside view of your car, or an inside view. In either case, it´s 40 000 polys...so it´s 4x. And yeah, considering there´s already characters in other games with 150 000 polygons, then yeah, it´s not particularly impressive.

Still, as I said, I hope it looks better than it sounds.

I wasn´t impressed by Doom´s character models. The lightning was very nice, and the normal mapping on corridors looked great, but the characters themselves looked starved for polygons and the textures were not of a resolution high enough to hide that. So yeah, I´m hoping next gen titles do use a fair ammount of actual geometry for character models and details at least.

:rolleyes: Stoll being a troll. I guess by your "logic" we could claim that it's not even "really" 40,000 anymore, it's more like 10-20,000 polys, because we'll spend most of the time looking at just the back side of the cars :rolleyes:

The cars will be comprised of 40,000 exterior polygons and 40,000 interior polygons. This is a huge leap when compared to the 10,000 total polygons used on the vehicles of PGR2.

It's not totally clear what IGN means. It's possible they render the interior in 3rd person -- what if the car is a convertible with the top down? And the trend recently has been to have transparent windows that let you see the interior of the vehicle.

Of course they could LOD down the interiors in 3rd person view...
 
I could have sworn PGR and PGR2 and between 12 and 16 thousand polys per car, and I agree that 40,000 seems a bit underwhelming (this coming from one of the biggest PGR fans you'll find). I was expecting in the neigborhood of 100,000 per car, oh well as long as they look great and it plays as good as the last two.

Sheez, it was just my opinion. I even tried to explain it, God forbid that someone isn´t impressed by a mere 4x increase in polygon budget for the car.

One last time, I HOPE THAT IN MOTION AND ACTUAL SCREENS THE CARS LOOK MUCH BETTER THAN THE ACTUAL INCREASE SOUNDS. Better?
 
Frankly, I think we're running into dimishing returns on exterior polygon counts for cars. Maybe Bizzare decided fully modelled interiors were a better use of polygons that would otherwise be used just to smooth out curves to a degree that you'd never see during gameplay anyway.
 
In the end it's just NOT about polys.... it's about how the cars look,and anyone who has seen any PGR 3 pics knows how FANTASTIC they look.

And anyway, with polys, the higher you go you hit a point of diminishing returns. as a gross example : what's the difference between a 1 million poly model and a 1 billion poly model? Or the difference between 500 FPS and 500,000 FPS..... to your eyes, these differences would go completely unnoticed.
