NPD June 2008

If they give you $100 back it may be, that's kind of the point of the discussion.

He's referring to the reason why their sample set might not have reflected the sales, not why you or I wouldn't go to Wal-Mart to take advantage of this.

Anyway we can forget about this whole Wal-Mart thing; I was just trying to make a point that where in most months I'm comfortable with the default 'normalization' associated with Wal-Mart via the NPDs, this month may have missed some sales relative to whatever their usual baromoter is. The point itself was all I was looking to highlight, certainly not trying to further any "but it sold even more!" talk as fodder for the usual Sony vs MS NPD undercurrents.

If more members of their panel bought PS3s during that deal it should be accounted for. but really, is Wal-Mart known for moving thousands and thousands of $400+ items?

If it's cheaper than anywhere else, why not? It's not like this was a secret special deal that only regular Walmart shoppers would be in on. Hell, the anecdotes even confirm it: I don't imagine Carl regularly shops for electronics in Walmart, and even so he bought one.

I think he insinuating that Walmart does not sell many PS3 period, so the NPD count will not be off my much no matter how they account for it.

good boost for the PS3 thanks to MGS.... appears that it's second moving hardware to only Halo3.

not bad though that 360 is only ~250k for the year behind PS3 (43k/mon) even with their biggest exclusive gun of 2008 (of the generation?) now released (MGS4).

they should be able to make that up in one holiday month or a price drop month.

It's the same thing/point though. People don't buy these things at Wal-Mart usually was what Nav was saying. For this event, they did. Did the NPD's pick up on that fact? Who knows, but their sample set probably doesn't include too many A/V forum lurkers.

It wasn't necessarily cheaper as there were other deals and price matching.

Minimal price matching I'm afraid, from my real world experience... else I would have gone to Best Buy! But the people that try to get it price matched are a class of hardcore bargain-hunters unto themselves.

Kinda like the people who actually use their gift cards and mail in rebates?

NPD's numbers should include estimated Walmart sales. It's just that no one knows how accurate that part is. Most people guess that Walmart won't move $400 boxes, but then again if there is a great deal... everybody's game.

Correct me if I am wrong, but wasnt this a $100 gift card offer (I honestly don't know), which cannot be used on the current purchase or was this $100 off out the door. Without pigeon-holing everyone that shops at Wal-Mart as poor (probably too late on my part for that) I am saying that expensive electronics are not necessarily what they are known for moving, of course, I just looked at their website and they have the 360 pro on the front-page so maybe I am way off. Anyway, my original "argument" was that NPD should be able to account for bumps if the participants are representative of the market as a whole.

So this proves the importance of console exclusives. But more importantly a bundle game. Had Sony not underestimate the demand for one they could of done even better in June.

I'm not sure what we are all discussing anymore, but yes, I'm in complete agreement on the notion that Wal-Mart is not where one would normally buy a PS3. The $100 was a gift card (or online gift card).

Now though, if you're saying also that Wal-Mart due to its bottom fishing status would have been passed by by individuals looking for the system, here I disagree. This deal was the subject of many a deep, deep thread in places such as Blu-ray.com, A/V forums, all those random "get a deal" sites... and I'm sure many a PS-centric gaming forum as well. Hell I wouldn't have known about it myself if it wasn't briefly mentioned in some thread around here, but when I went to research it what I found was a cyclone of Net-based interest.

Anyway, my original "argument" was that NPD should be able to account for bumps if the participants are representative of the market as a whole.

Right, and there lies the question; is their sample set representative of the Internet crowd that descended on them? I personally don't know, but if I had to venture a guess, I would be inclined to think not.

I buy most of my games from Walmart(well new releases), no wait for me. Anyway didn't they sell out of bundles. SONY needs to package their system with a game in NA.

Yes but what about WW?
