If by niche you mean biggest and hardcore you mean everybody, sure.

Sony is gonna use everything they have to throw Sackboy at the world and make everyone love him. Will it be a succes? everyone that consider themselves a gamer should hope so. In this case i will be stupid optimistic and say it will be this generations number one title. Much more fun than just being angry and negative.

I don't agree. While the game thankfully ships with levels after that its up to the user to find more and we can see from youtube and other services that there is a lot of poo to go through before you find the gems. I don't think the casual market is going to go for that. This isn't wii fit or wii sports. Its a 2d hardcore platformer.

I also don't get what you mean by this being the generations number 1 title. Do you mean sales wise ? If so you think this is going to beat halo 3 and gears of war and wii fit and smash brothers ? Or do you mean the most sought after game, which i don't believe for a second as I never hear any talk of this title outside of these forums. I know sony has been pimping this for a long time but I just don't see it happening.

Honestly though if you want to argue about this we can do this in the LBP thread. I will buy the game but i've stated I don't know if sony is going to be able to make this game right and if they can handle all the dick and fart joke levels that get thrown at the title by users

Every NPD thread is a very polite console wars thread.

Hence why a lot of us don't even bother anymore.

There is always contrast and disagreements on the forum due to background, experience, contacts, and data available. But there is a line and quite frequently that line has become more and more blurred, "say it enough times it becomes true," and submarined platform advocacy. Hence why bother? The data will be the data. Developer issues will be developer issues. Straining at a gnat won't change much; it may be good entertainment but in times past the goal was a better understanding of the industry and the dynamics that drive it with input from a host of viewpoints.

Some of you folks need to check in the console wars crap at the mouse button click. Such discussion has no place here and OT/noise posts will be deleted.

I stopped bothering with these monthly updates as they are pointless until one separates itself by well above 200k sales from the others on a constant basis, other than the Wii and handhelds that is.

LBP larger than Gears of War 2 ? Are you kidding me ? Anyway Sony has already released a huge exclusive title this year , starting in August Ms is going to start releasing alot of their exclusives. I predict in Sept (esp with a price drop) Ms is going to make up for the last few months in sales and over take Sonys lead this year in the states and then outsell them the rest of the year. The 360 has a huge amount of games and Finally drop its price. You say Sony was to expensive last year and it looks like it can be the case again. They will be $200 more than the cheapest sku from MS . On that system you can play GTA4 , Gears 2 and other games. Is bluray and LBP worth $200 to the average American consumer. For $300 you get a 60 gig drive and all those great games on the 360. Is that $100 worth the extra 20 gigs and bluray ? Those are the questions that need to be answered , if ms does another holdiay bundle with a price drop we will see more questions that need to be answered.

Read the post again. I dont think GOW2 will bring in many new gamers. Its another hardcore shooter that doesnt have many unique selling points beyond the facts its a third-person shooter, despite the pedigree of the first title.

Sure MS has exclusives and Fable 2 and Alan Wake look very nice, but if anything, Sony has more exclusives coming. Some people say that LBP will be a hardcore game, but with its cutesy graphics and lead character, I think it a game that can easily be marketed for casuals. I dont think Sony or MS have many other games like this, though MS will obviously be hoping Banjo does well.

I think LBP will sell bucketloads and be a real system seller.

Btw I think its pretty obvious now that not many people care about Arcade, cheap or not. This could change, but I seriously doubt it.

I disagree. What we're seeing here is what you're describing (ie, the 360 and the PS3 not being able to have any real differences) however that is an event in itself. That's partly why these numbers are important. Just because there's no immediate "loser" in sales doesn't mean the numbers aren't work analysing.

If anything, these numbers show this gen is closer to last gen than before, with one clear sales leader, and fierce battle for second place.

I was under the impression that Sony has more "announced" exclusives in the pipeline but total exclusive titles (not arcade like titles) are relatively equal on an annual basis.

Though I may be wrong as I honestly havent been following many console titles lately and have a tendency not to pay much attention to them until their launch window nears.

Perhaps I shouldnt dare to say it but I believe a properly marketed third party title can sell as many consoles and create just as much console interest as a first party title.

I think from now until the rest of the year, Sony has more, but I could be wrong.

I think my point is that LBP is the most unique of any exclusives this winter IMO. I mean you have GOW2, R2, Bioshock on PS3, SOCOM, Far Cry 2, KZ in February etc. No doubts that GOW2 will sell plenty of copies, but after a game like GTA4 fails to move much hardware, will GOW2 do the job? IMO its a more 'hardcore' game than GTA, that wont have many people jumping off the sofa to buy a 360, just like R2 wont have many people doing the same to get a PS3 IMO.

Madden in the US ( and FIFA/Pro Evo in Europe) will move units, but they are obviously multiplatform.

I guess we'll when the time comes.

i don't think sony has more exclusives this year. I don't know why you post bioshock for ps3 , its already out for the xbox 360. Ms has a bunch of exclusives and with out going into list wars they have Too human , fable 2 , viva piniata 2 , banjo , Gears 2 , Naruto broken bonds , tale of vespa , Infinite Undiscovery and scene it 2 off the top of my head. These are all out by the end of december and are all exclusive or time exclusive. So I don't see MS hurting for exclusive titles this year They will have alot to advertise and gears will sell some impressive numbers and most likely get some news attention. Are these as unique as LBP ? Mabye not but there is something for everyone on the 360 and some proven exclusives which LBP isn't.

the argument that LBP > gears2 is silly at this point, one completely unproven ip vs sequel to a 5 million selling title?

While LBP has lots of potential, no logical argument can be formed with LBP outselling geow2. Unless your just gonna be basing this on your own personal impressions and guessing that is... and that is frankly worthless.

Basically what your saying is that "you think LBP will outsell Geow2, because you like the trailers\previews". Which is just the same as saying "LBP > Geow2 because i said so. "

Personally i could care less about geow2 but i think people should atleast try to make serious arguments, as its completely pointless to try and discuss which future title will outsell when you haven't actually played the games. Grow up

Well, if LBP is successfully marketed at a demographic that extends beyond the core, there's the potential to outsell just about anything on HD consoles. But that's a self-fulfilling prophecy: 'if X is marketed successfully to the vast majority of people who wouldn't usually buy X, it'll sell better'. Well, duh. Plus, those are pretty big ifs. The only thing pointing in that direction is that at least Sony is working hard at marketing the title. But then Sony tried to do that with LocoRoco in Japan and it still wasn't a hit.

 off the top of your head? thats pretty much all of them... someones keeping track.

@Ostepop, i don't think anyone said LBP would outsell GeoW2. if anyone did, i would disagree as well. however, i wouldn't be surprised if LBP moved more systems than GeoW2.

What's the big deal about LBP ? It's a platformer, a genre that's been on a decline. I am doubtful that LBP will pull big sales number like The New Super Mario Brothers to beat Gears2.

To me LBP is about as unappealing of a game as you can get. From characters, gameplay mechanic to its concept, its just meh. If Sony is banking on LBP to drive PS3 sales, well I think they got a problem.

umm, you left out the biggest part of LBP.... the level creating and character customization. not everyone has the same taste in games. i don't really find it all that appealing either (mainly because i prefer action, shooters, racing and sports games) but i can see LBP appealing to many people, moreso with casual gamers.

Platformers are a genre in decline for people who regularly play videogames. User-created content isn't, so there's that draw, though it may not be enough.

For people who don't usually play videogames, there is no 'decline' or 'ascendance'.
As far as genres go, platforming is pretty easy to approach, at least compared to genres with more elaborate controls. Add to that that the sackboys seem to appeal to many, your opinion notwithstanding, and the extensive (both level and character) customization, and I can see why Sony thinks they have something on their hands with LBP.

Thats what I preordered last week :)

How would you know how many systems LBP sells , isn't it coming out in nov or dec ?

But creating and downloading custom level are the domain of the hardcore. Just like the other guy, I don't get the hype either. I've seen some gameplay, I just can't see anyone I know who aren't that into games, who I consider casual gamers, seeing it and go "hey, I wanna try that."
