Online retailers are not really representitive of what's going on.
I searched for 20GB PS3 a lot in my area, end up buying one online.
They have different demographics, and probably much better inventory management (due to size primarily).

And while it seems like things aren't looking good for 360, August is Madden month, Gears 2 isn't far behind, so July numbers may be irrelevant in the long run.

You missed the point I think, enter your zip code in the "Find store" part. One store had stock (no idea how many) out of 12 stores in my area. I'm not saying this affected the July NPDs though.

Out of the same 12 stores, 10 have 20GB 360.

Yes, August is a big month for the ps3. Last yr after 2 yrs of bad Madden's the 360 finally got a decent one and it bumped up console sales about 200k for the month. The ps3 is now in the exact same position and I'm looking for the same kind of increase. One thing that could sales down though is console availability.

The numbers for the PS3 is obvious. 40 gig PS3 isn't in production anymore and Sony is clearing the channel to make way for the 80 gig that takes on the same price. This is basically why the numbers are so low because they are hard to find.

These links show the stock status of the items during the NPD time frame of July? Or are these from august 14Th and thus have nothing to do with the comments above.
so youre saying, during july it was sold out, yet now in august (even though its now discontinued, ie not made anymore) its miraculously back in stock, done a lazarus.

I think the evidence of their being no moonlandings was more convincing then that.
aka give it up :) it was never sold out
zed, do you do that chart yourself? Are you able to link (or post in code tags) to the table you use with units?
sure

btw forth month in a row wii numbers have dropped, perhaps the hype is starting to slowly die

thought I'ld add another chart, just like the cricket, the average of the last 10 months (so u have an idea of how its currently performing),
as u can see all 3 consoles are performing above their normal.

@eastmen, yes Im sure u saw a shop that was soldout of xbox360s, that doesnt mean they were soldout over the country.
Im sure every month since launch u could find a shop somewhere in the US, that was sold out of ps3s, that doesnt mean sony can claim the ps3 is currently soldout.
(hmm why do I bother)

You mean went up since the weekly numbers are up? I sure wouldn't compare the numbers from a 5 week NPD month to a 4 week NPD month unless you are comparing weekly.

Are you saying that stores had so much stock that those of us that saw the units selling and stores sold out really just had them hidding behind us.

Guess what , a store can sell out of something and then a few days or weeks later gets more stock of the item in. Go figure that .... its not like The milk at the grocery store magicly respawns

Playstation 3 225k
Xbox 360 205k

Almost 10% more sold, no obvious hardware selling software(?) and still the most expensive Console of the bunch.

The PS3 is keeping it´s momentum, impressive.

Here in Denmark it´s still sold out.

Err, the biggest game of the generation, MGS4, just came out?

Err, the biggest game of the generation, MGS4, just came out?

It came out at the beginning of June. Week on week, my guess/observation is most games' sales come down with a factor of about 0.65-0.7 (I mean S becomes around 0.67*S next week). That means it should be expected to sell around 100k in the July NPD period and miss out on top 10.

I honestly can't see the "momentum" you're talking about, unless you're comparing the PS3's sales to its pitiful numbers of 2007.

Using zed's numbers, here's a simple chart. I see the PS3 having a terrible year last year, beaten by huge amounts every month, and then hitting roughly the same sales as the 360, with one positive bump. Feel free to direct me to the momentum, of course.

Edit: oh, and of course I left Wii's numbers off there because that just messes up the scale and makes both systems look awfully weak :p

I am comparing it to the 360 that was first to market, gave it a healthy beating for a long time and sold for less as well.

I still find it a bit surprising that the PS3 is outselling a console with more games and that cost less. In my view as long as the PS3 can sell more than the 360 it has a momentum going for it. And it should even pickup steam as a nice bunch of exclusives hit the market close to Xmas.

With a little luck and a massive marketing campaign i think the PS3 can catch the 360, maybe even in the USA.

OK, so by "momentum" against the 360, you actually mean "being roughly equal"?

OK, so by "being roughly equal" you actually mean "1,834,000 vs 1,547,000 in 2008"? :D
Like I said in my post, there was obviously a kick up. "Continuing momentum" to me does not mean dropping back to the levels before the kick-up, obviously.

If you're also pushing the fact that there's momentum, can you point out where I should be looking on that chart? Thanks.

No i mean going from absolutely piss poor sales, a dead locked format war and very bad pr.

To outselling it´s biggest enemy, thanks to Blu-Ray positive PR and good exclusive games.

I think it has build up momentum and the sales shows it, you do not, fair enough.
