Isnt this a moot point, since most (at least monitors....) sets can display 1:1? IE if you have a 1080P display, you can set it to 1:1 mode and sure, the picture will be smaller but it will run its naitive 720P mode? Or is this a feature thats exclusive to PC montiors?
Can you share which model and maker your tv is?
My display doesn't have that option, and frankly, I don't want it. I watch 720p cable all the time and it looks great.
Most cable is in 1080i not 720p,so 1080p would be better.
I believe Fox is 720p while CBS and NBC are 1080i. The 1080i cable probably looks better, but I'd have to switch channels to tell (certainly CSI Miami looks really good right now...too bad the show sucks).
WOW! To me CBS has the worst HD picture out of the three. I like Fox the best.
Re-calibrate your tv...or get it calibrated in the first place. While I'm not sure what content to which you are referring sports vs. tv show, I believe that CBS is the only one of the majors that does not multicast.
I'm talking about Sunday Football.
7:22: A question on why HDMI only is in the high level version of the PS3 only. Kutaragi explained that if they put the HDMI in the lower version, they were worried that some would complain about having something they don't want. However, HDMI penetration has come faster than expected, Kutaragi says. He asks if people want HDMI in all models. Everyone in the audience say yes. He then confirms that all models, including the 20 gig version, will have an HDMI port.
IGN: What are your thoughts on 1080p? You're rendering some stuff out at that resolution now, do you think it's necessary for games to be standardized as 1080p and is it doable?
Eggebrecht: First of all, we are not only rendering some part of Lair in 1080p. The whole game is in 1080p native, from front-end to all in-game bits.
We absolutely love 1080p because of the detail that you can see. When we went up from 720 to 1080 I was blown away how much more of the artwork was visible. We started out being true 720p proponents, but since switching over to true 1080p via HDMI a few months ago I can't go back.
Lair is not upscaling or cheating to get to 1080p, we are natively running at the full 1920x1080 progressive resolution. Earlier this year we were quite skeptical if that would be possible, but the final kits really were a revelation in terms of power. Sony delivered what they promised and after a bit of tweaking we had the game up-and running. One thing that did help us was that our engine always was heavily reliant on data streaming, so the larger frame buffer memory never was an issue. By now half of our staff has 1080p monitors, and believe me, the 720 guys are jealous.
That'd make entry-level a lot cheaper for a number of people who's chief concern was the HDMI port in choosing between SKUs. Nice if true. Probably important as well, as without it support for 1080p content (games as well as movies - sounds like there will be some) on TVs would be constrained.
PLAYSTATION 3 will feature interactive Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound for games, Dolby Digital, and Dolby TrueHD for decoding up to 7.1 channels for Blu-ray movie playback.
its also worth noting that the ps3 will decode TrueHD audio.

IGN: The game's tech specs have been a frequent topic of discussion. So that said, what level of HD will it run in (720p, 1080i, 1080p), what's the final framerate, and what sort of audio codec have you decided to support?
Al Hastings, Chief Technology Officer: Our intention is to support all HD modes including 1080p. The framerate will be locked at 30 frames per second in both single-player and multiplayer. We use a number of different codecs internally including AC3 and ATRAC3 depending on what's best suited to each particular case. The highest quality output format our game supports is 7.1 uncompressed over HDMI.
isn't this topic over since the Lair dev clearly say that their game is in pure/real/honest to goodness/native 1080p. and that they are not using any tricks, or upscaling or such?
or are there some who would question the devs at hand?
