News & Rumors: Xbox One (codename Durango)

I am using the Youtube app. I haven't had a problem with any other channel ever since.

It seems to be a serious bug, the console kinda freezes, it starts emitting a high frequency sound in the innards and it turns completely off.

p.s. I still very much prefer to use the Xbox One's Youtube app than the computer for Youtube -except for comments-, the image quality is better by default and it displays the videos full-screen --or in the small screen on the very middle of the console's interface.

try pairing your phone to the Youtube app. When you access the channel through the phone see if if the app still causes the console to freeze.

Im going to try and see if it happens to my console also.

I would try but my phone is pretty average for software like that. It's a Nokia I purchased a year ago -which complements a Blackberry phone that I had, which I don't use now except for its alarm clock features-, but I needed a mobile phone after breaking my previous Nokia and not being happy with my Blackberry I bought a cheap and functional new Nokia.

I hope you can reproduce the bug.

News:

The next Xbox One OS update seems to be A-MAZING. The best programmers of the world are working on the OS: :smile2:

You do know that this article is a month or so old (around the console launch periods)?
Oops, okay. The news feed said it is from today -it's one of the very very few flaws the newsfeed where I get the news does have, it's mostly perfect in every possible way-, I don't know why that happen. I will remove the news then.

Gotta sleep, really.

Shortbread was talking about this news, which is by no means new. Well, it's just an Ars Technica article about both consoles dated Nov. 21st, detailing their features, which one to choose, etc.

As for the Xbox One OS, the news saying that the best programmers of the world are working on the new OS might -just maybe- be true. IGN said in one of their recent videos that Microsoft are working on small updates for the OS and on a very significant update expected to come out in Springtime.

We shall see. I truly hope that Microsoft start selling the Xbox One for what it is and advertising it as what it is, as a multimedia machine.

In my opinion, they should sell the console with the logotypes of services like Demand 5, Hulu Plus, 4oD, Netflix, Lovefilm, Crackle, Amazon Instant Prime, Youtube, Machinima, BBC, ITV, ABC, RTE -Ireland-, Wuaki TV, RTVE, etc etc etc, on the box. :smile2:

Has iPlayer launched or is there another way to watch the beeb on the One? Just curious.

Afaik, it doesn't have a BBC iPlayer. Well, not one that works anyway. At least the last time I checked. I was just using it as an example 'cos the app is fully functional on the X360 and it's hoped for in the future.

"Best programmers in the world" may be stretching it a little... :) Although, the XBox team does attract the elite at MS, it's one of the "sexiest" teams to be on, and competition for open positions is pretty fierce. It also makes it a tough team to stand out on, especially when MS was still using the curve. Because the curve was division wide, instead of company wide, people who would be rockstars anywhere else in the company could sometimes get shafted at review time in the xbox org.

Okey dokey. The BBC website, which is frequently out of date which is why I asked, says they are working on it so it's coming! :D

Your idea is interesting but I remember Microsoft products of old being begin so covered in logos they were a mess. The Xbox One box is elegant in it's simplicity - it's a tricky balance to hit!

What's 'the curve' ?

Thanks, this is eerily familiar. In the UK Government department in which I work 25% of the staff are exceptional, 50% are average and 25% are below average. Year on year. A bit spooky that. Or as some of us consider it. Bullshit.
Yep. At MS, because the rankings were by division and level, it was easy to get shafted, also, your ranking is set long before anyone has even read your review, so rankings were less about what you did, and more about who you knew and how well you played the political game. In the XBox org, for instance, at one point there were only three level 63 (senior) test engineers in the group, and one of them _had_ to get "underperformed", irrespective of how much work they actually accomplished. (I was not level 63 :)).

Anyway, enough of the off-topic, sorry for the derailment.

That is awesome news, has there been any update on the load times? I'm curious why instals are taking so long... MS had Sony last generation, what could possibly be causing installations to drag like they are?

I would take anything Thuway reports with a large dose of salt. Much of what he posted on GAF turned out to complete and utter nonsense.

This is just absurd. There's no metric on how you judge who is "best". Programming is large field with practically infinite possibilities and room for talents in many different areas. There's no argument that MS surely employs very talented and qualified people for the task, but to compare them or call them "best" is neither constructive, realistic nor indicative of anything.

Also, if the concept (may that be business or technically) is flawed, no 'best' programmers will make a difference. This to me just sounds like some typical sensationalist colum to get some hits and say "don't be worried - the experience will be improved soon and there are qualified people working on ensuring that".

The headline certainly resounds. Plus, the OS still needs some work so having the best programmers working on it would make sense. But I understand what you mean. :smile2:

In regards to the theory, from a mainstream point of view, I remember back in the late 90s when I was a kid that we used to have long debates on almost everything and I remember that my friends used to think that Microsoft had the best programmers of the world.

It was when Linux was beginning to bloom, and one of the lines of thought that people had is that Linux was pretty cool, but since they were unpaid programmers they couldn't hire nor have the most talented people like Microsoft did with Windows. We also talked about how many millions lines of code Windows had. Fun!

Right or wrong they were just theories. We had another pretty cool theory which said that Americans were the best workers of the world, because they just specialised themselves in one specific job and they worked at that all their life.

The headline reminded me of those times.
