14W sounds like a bit too much to have the box sitting for hours upon end waiting for a command. Hopefully there is an 1-2W option like a laptop sleep mode, just push a button on the controller to wake up.

yeah, exactly. microsoft said it amounts to 5c a day in the u.s. my figuring says that may be a bit high for me personally, but a $1 month for 24/7@14w is likely close.

that's $60 over a 5 year lifespan of the console ($90 if you use MS 5c figure), not insignificant if you paid it all at once.

Maybe this is for non-kinect on:

In its lowest power state, Xbox One uses only a ½-watt, which is less than about a half a U.S. cent or one-third of a Euro cent per day.

14W/24h is over 30Euro here. You keep units like a Router/DSL/NAS active for 24h because it's convenient but surely not a console so it can download hidden updates. Our power prices here are ridiculous high though.

According to a Eurogamer article, Xbox One's DVR and Skype support is limited to Gold subscribers.

Why Microsoft, why!?!?! :???:

This has been the most troubling aspect of the Xbox service. The more non gaming features they move outside of the paywall the greater the incentive to get a Xbox there will be...

i swear the MS strategic planners are stone cold idiots.

WFT?!? There goes one of the biggest selling points of the console for me (seamless skype on tv). May have to re-evaluate whether I really need one of these. Maybe I'll just get a webcam for tv which has skype built in.

It makes perfect sense, it's a internet service to spread your videos, most except the absolute minimum access will require gold. I wonder if you will be able to use the Browser at all, the TV functions etc..

Now we just need confirmation on Netflix, HBO etc.. and lets hear about Sony.. i expect them to paywall their sharing as well..

And won't most sharing be multiplayer gaming anyway, that requires PS+ or Gold?

This is more business discussion if we want to talk comparison, but assuming the info stops here and I don't have to delete a dozen posts including this one and ban myself, regards the competition, PS4 has already been described as having free party chat (like PS3) as well as Netflix. The only thing that requires a paywall at the moment is online gaming.

I seem to recall they've already confirmed you don't need PS+ to share videos. They want people to use it, then it wouldn't make sense to put a paywall in front of it. Besides, it's fundamentally just youtube integration I believe, so why you'd need a subscription for that is beyond me. (Virtually) none of the actual functionality would be handled by Sony.

I can't believe people are surprised by this. Really? Seriously? Sony conceding to charging for online multiplayer just endorsed Microsoft's whole reasoning for having a paywall. Expect more paid features from both sides. Eventually you won't be able to do any gaming without a subscription. It's coming, get ready.

More 12gb rumors...

  • There are now new kits at Microsoft with 12GB of RAM that are explicitly not dev kits.
  • The decision was brought to the higher-ups to sign off on it at least several weeks ago.
  • There has been no word on the final decision from our sources.
  • The RAM upgrade is still very likely our source put it at a 70% likelihood.

There is another bit of contention surrounding what we have been told. With the RAM upgrade, there comes the decision on how to split gaming and OS resources. Some within Microsoft have apparently been lobbying for a 50/50 split, while others have stated that there may be 7 or 8GB given to the gaming partition.

"at least several weeks ago"? Don't buy it. "70% likelihood"? I was thinking 1 in 3 chance before, now I might go 1 in 2.

Anyway, if it's true, who here thinks they might just split it 50/50 now that they have a new Xbox chief with a Windows background?

50/50 would be truly disgusting...

anyways we have people constantly wonder what the heck Sony.MS are doing with 2-3GB, 6GB would just be crazy I think.

I could see an 8-4 split perhaps. If more than 8GB starts seeing diminishing returns for gaming which seems reasonable.

Remember it's said that 1GB of the current XO allocation is in limbo, so the XO OS is really 2GB. So you'd be going from 2 to 6.
