Yeah that's pretty rough timing if it's true, I wonder whose replacing him.
I doubt it was related to the restructuring, most of the fall out from that has already happened, I'm guessing that Matrick was above the level where most of the damage was done anyway.

Actually, I'd say this is the beginning of the fall out.

About 6 months ago a LOT of "partner" level employees were told to leave or be re-leveled (losing their partner status). I'd guess most are now elsewhere.
If there is going to be business unit shuffling then yes that could impact people like Matrick. The only other place I could see E&D though is bundled in with Windows and frankly I think that would be disastrous for Xbox. Though in a post Sinofsky era it might not be quite as bad.

From the reporting Mary Jo Foley, Paul Thurrott, and Tom Warren have been doing, this is a major level re-org that would (and I guess already has) affected top level people.

Is it good or bad for Xbox brand? I mean, it is "bad" because it is happening on a non-stability moment, but... can it be a good thing at long term?

Is going to Zynga a step up?

He'll likely get more money and finally have full control of a company instead of needing to pay lip service to a boss. A more interesting challenge really. Many said similar things about Marissa Mayer moving to Yahoo after being passed for promotions at Google; I think it's pretty clear now she made the right choice.

Because of how launches work, he'd either have to go now right when the Xbox One launch was really ramping up or wait 5 months for the system to actually launch. Now is better.

Well Mayer and Mattrick are probably set for life either way.

So they can take on the challenges of turning around companies which have little hope, in which case they get more boatloads of money, or they walk away as failures with more truckloads of money from having failed.

Both companies are kind of in desperate straits I guess.

Good. Matrick has been a disaster lately
.
Get some fresh blood flowing and pick up the ball and run with it...

People acting like the One already failed are laughable... This Gen hasn't even started yet.. So much more to come

Ballmer to take the helm . For now at least. He better find a new proxy to be his shield

Zynga announced today that Don Mattrick would be its new CEO, effective July 8. This is a great opportunity for Don, and I wish him success. Don’s directs will report to me and will continue to drive the day-to-day business as a team, particularly focused on shipping Xbox One this holiday.

Wow, people sure do love to parrot "the sky is falling" mantra.

The recent events certainly make for interesting times.

Days ago I mentioned that I wouldn't mind if Phil Spencer or someone else was the new CEO of the Xbox division, after how badly Mattrick had advertised the new policies of Xbox One, which resulted in... what we know of already. I don't like to see people leaving a company though, but in this case there's some justification to it.

The Xbox division needs someone now who really stands out.
